Training vs boarding
Board and train vs dog boarding: what changes and what does not
The two get confused because both mean the dog sleeps somewhere else. That is where the overlap ends. This page explains what changes during each, what does not, and why a week of boarding and a week of Silver cost different money and produce different dogs.

Side by side
Boarding preserves the dog you have; board and train replaces the habits you do not want.
In boarding, the product is safety and care. A good boarding operation feeds on schedule, exercises the dog, keeps him clean and calls the vet if something is wrong. Nobody is teaching him to stop pulling, and nobody should claim to be. After ten days he is happy to see you, possibly tired, and exactly as trained as he was when you left. That is the honest deal, and for a trained dog it is all you need.
In board and train, the product is the change. Our trainers work your dog every day: place while dinner cooks, waiting at the front door, loose leash on Cypress streets, and in Platinum, field trips to the stores along 290 and controlled exposure to the triggers that set him off. Updates arrive Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and the stay ends with a go-home session. The dog who comes home is not the dog who left.
| Dog boarding | Board and train at Best Dog University | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Care while you are away | Behavior change, then a handover to you |
| Daily work | Feeding, exercise, supervision | Structured training in the house, on the street and in public |
| Where the dog lives | A kennel, a facility or a sitter's home | Our trainer's home in Cypress, a limited number of dogs |
| Length | As long as your trip | 1 week ($1,500) to 6 weeks ($10,000); Platinum 3 weeks, $3,750 |
| What comes home | The same dog, hopefully well rested | New habits, a go-home session, follow-up lessons and support |
| Returning clients | Boarding with training refreshers is available | Any graduate can book a later stay |
When boarding wins
Boarding wins when the dog is already trained and you just need a place.
A dog who walks nicely, settles on place and comes when called does not need to be re-trained every time you fly out of Bush or Hobby. He needs a clean, calm place with people who will keep his routine. That is boarding, and paying for training you do not need is a waste. Choose a place that asks about your dog's habits and keeps them, rather than one that promises to fix things in a week of kennel time.
Boarding also wins for short trips and holiday travel, when there is not enough time for a training stay to mean anything. A week of Silver is a real program with a go-home session; three nights is not. For our returning clients, boarding with training refreshers is the middle option: the dog stays in the home he already knows, gets his commands tuned up, and comes back sharper than he went.
- The dog already has reliable obedience
- The trip is short
- You need dates, not a program
- The dog is a Best Dog University graduate who could use a refresher
- Nothing about his behavior is worrying you
When board and train wins
Board and train wins the moment you want the dog back different.
If you find yourself hoping the boarding stay will calm him down, that is the sign. Pulling, jumping, barking at the window, ignoring recall at Bill Archer Bark Park, growling at guests: these do not resolve because the dog spent two weeks in a run. They resolve because a trainer built the alternative behavior and proofed it every day. That is the job of Gold at $2,500 or Platinum at $3,750, and it is not something a boarding kennel can add on.
Board and train also wins when travel and training can be combined honestly. A family in Katy taking a two-week summer trip can book Gold for the same dates and come home to a dog who waits at the door. Just be clear about the priority: the stay is a program with a start and an end, not a hotel with flexible checkout. If the trip is the point and the training is a bonus, say so on the phone consultation and our team will tell you whether the dates fit.
- You want a behavior fixed, not maintained
- Pulling, jumping, reactivity or a recall that fails
- The dog has never had structured training
- A trip of two weeks or more lines up with Gold or Platinum
- You want a go-home session and support afterward

What Houston families choose
Houston families board the trained dog and train the untrained one, in that order.
The pattern is simple. Families whose dog has been through a stay with us board him elsewhere or come back for boarding with refreshers, and it works because the dog already has rules. Families who have never trained the dog often try boarding first, get a tired dog back, and call us a month later. Our team would rather you skip that step, which is why this page exists.
Hurricane season complicates both. From June 1 to November 30 a training stay may overlap a storm watch, and our team plans for it: the training home is a house, not a facility with a hundred kennels to evacuate. Holiday weeks fill early for training and boarding alike, so a Thanksgiving or Christmas start should be reserved well ahead. And in a July stay, expect early and late outdoor sessions and indoor work through the heat of the day.
How to decide
Decide boarding or board and train in five steps.
Answer the first question honestly and the rest usually follows. If you get stuck at step four, the phone consultation is where our team checks the dates against the program.
Ask whether you are hoping the dog comes home different. If yes, this is a training decision.
If the dog is trained and you need dates, book boarding and keep his routine.
If the dog is a graduate of ours, ask our team about boarding with training refreshers.
If the dog is untrained and the trip is two weeks or more, ask whether Gold or Platinum fits the dates.
If the trip is under a week and the dog needs training, board now and book the stay for later; a real program needs its full length.
The programs
The training stays, from one week to three.
Every program lives in our Cypress home and ends with a go-home session. Boarding with refreshers is for graduates.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Do you offer plain boarding without training?
Boarding with training refreshers is available for returning clients, meaning dogs who have completed a program with us. The dog stays in the training home he knows and gets his commands tuned up during the stay. For a dog who has not trained with us, the options are a board and train program or private lessons.
Is a week of Silver just boarding with extras?
No. Silver is a seven-day foundation program at $1,500 that teaches loose leash walking, door boundaries and basic structure, with Monday, Wednesday and Friday updates and a go-home session where you learn the handling. Boarding keeps a dog safe for a week. Silver sends him home with a different set of habits at the door and on the leash.
Will my dog be in a kennel during board and train?
No. The training home is our trainer's own house in Cypress with a limited number of dogs at a time. Your dog lives in the house, rests in a crate or on a place bed, walks real streets and, in Platinum and VIP, visits real stores and parks. That is the whole point: he learns where life happens.
Can I extend a board and train into boarding if my trip runs long?
Sometimes, depending on space, since only a limited number of dogs live in the training home at once. Tell our team the travel dates when you book so the program and the trip line up from the start. If a flight is delayed, call us; we work it out case by case rather than by a rule.
