What is the difference between boarding and board and train?
The two share a word and almost nothing else. This page separates them by what fills the day, who handles the dog, what comes home, and which one a Houston family actually needs for a given trip.

The short version
One keeps the dog the same; the other is supposed to send a different dog home.
Boarding is a service for you: somebody responsible feeds, waters, walks and houses your dog while you are in Galveston or on a plane. Nothing about the dog is meant to change, and if he pulls to the car on drop-off he will pull to the car on pickup. Board and train is a service for the dog: a trainer works him every day with a curriculum, and the point is that the dog who comes home does not do the things that made you book.
That difference decides everything else. Boarding is priced by the night and staffed by whoever is on shift. Board and train is priced by the program, run by the trainer whose house it is, and ends with a go-home session that teaches you the handling. The dog can be gone the same fourteen days in both; only one of those fortnights has a curriculum.
- Boarding: care while you travel, no behavior change expected
- Board and train: daily training with a curriculum and a handover
- Boarding is a bed; board and train is a program with a go-home session
Side by side
Set them next to each other and the day looks nothing alike.
The table below is the honest comparison. The boarding column describes a typical facility rather than any particular one, and there are good boarding kennels in Houston; the point is what each service is for, not which is better. A dog with no behavior problems who needs a safe week does not need a trainer. A dog who has been asked to leave a daycare needs more than a kennel.

For your dog
The right choice depends on the dog, not the length of your trip.
A puppy under four months does not belong in either for long; a pet sitter at home or a trusted friend plus the Puppy Development Bundle is the better plan at that age. A well-trained adult who just needs a week of care is a boarding dog, and returning Best Dog University clients can book boarding with training refreshers so the skills are polished while you are gone. That is the one place the two services overlap.
A dog with problems is a board and train dog, and a trip is often the trigger that finally makes a family book. Pulling, jumping and door bolting are Gold at $2,500 for two weeks. Reactivity, anxiety and any growling are Platinum at $3,750 for three, with behavior modification and unlimited lessons. The trap to avoid is booking boarding for a dog with problems and hoping the kennel staff will fix them on the side.
- Trained dog, a week of care: boarding with refreshers for graduates
- Pulling, jumping, doors: Gold, two weeks
- Reactivity, anxiety or growling: Platinum, three weeks
Houston reality
Holiday travel, hurricane season and summer trips are when Houston families ask this.
Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break are the peaks for both services, and a board and train booked to end just before you travel wastes the go-home session, because the dog needs you present in the first two weeks home. Better to book the stay to cover the trip and come home to the handover, or to finish it two weeks before you leave. Our team helps line the dates up on the phone consultation.
Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, is the other Houston layer. Whichever service you use, ask what the evacuation plan is, and leave records and an out-of-town contact with the dog. In summer the difference shows most clearly: a boarding yard at noon in July is a heat risk, while a training day here moves outdoors at dawn and dusk and into the air-conditioned stores along 290 and Fry Road in between.
Decide whether the dog needs care or change; that is the whole choice.
For change, book the stay to end with you home for two weeks, or to cover the trip and end at the handover.
For care after a program, ask about boarding with training refreshers as a returning client.
In hurricane season, leave records and an evacuation contact with either service.
Book early for holiday weeks; the training home takes only a limited number of dogs.
The programs
Two programs, one transport option, and boarding for graduates.
Gold is two weeks at $2,500 for manners and obedience, with one follow-up lesson and lifelong support. Platinum is three weeks at $3,750 with behavior modification, field trips, a comprehensive handover and unlimited private lessons. Transport is $250 door-to-door and includes the first lesson in your home. Once your dog has graduated, boarding with training refreshers is available so a later trip keeps the skills sharp instead of letting them slide.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Can I just add some training to a boarding stay?
At most facilities a training add-on is a few short sessions between kennel time, which teaches a dog a trick or two and changes nothing at home. Real board and train is a full day of structure, a curriculum and a handover to you. If your dog has problems worth fixing, book the program; if he does not, book boarding and enjoy the trip.
Is board and train just expensive boarding?
No. The price covers a trainer's full attention for two or three weeks, field trips, updates, a go-home session and follow-up lessons, and the dog who comes home behaves differently. Boarding at a per-night rate for the same fourteen days buys a bed and a yard. They are different services with different goals, priced for what they deliver.
Do you offer plain boarding without training?
For returning clients, yes: boarding with training refreshers, so a graduate keeps his skills while you are away. We do not run a general boarding kennel, because the training home takes only a limited number of dogs and those places go to dogs in programs. Ask our team about dates well before a holiday.
Which one is better for a dog with separation anxiety while I travel?
Neither is a fix, but board and train at least builds crate comfort, place and calm while you are gone, and Platinum's in-home lessons carry the departure work into your house afterward. Boarding a dog with separation anxiety keeps him safe and nothing more, and a kennel environment can make some dogs worse.
