Board and train · Straight answer

Does board and train work?

The question usually comes from someone who has already tried a class, a book and a dozen videos. Here is what a live-in program does that those cannot, where it falls short, and how to make the results survive the drive home from Cypress.

The short version

It works because the dog practices new habits all day, not for one hour a week.

A weekly lesson gives a dog an hour of clear information and a week of the old routine. A board and train flips that ratio. From the first morning your dog wakes up into structure: a calm exit from the crate, a wait at the door, a walk where pulling earns nothing and a loose leash earns forward motion, place while the house eats. Repetition on that scale is what changes a default, and a default is what you are paying for.

The second reason is the setting. Your dog lives in our trainer's own house off US-290 in Cypress, so skills are built in rooms, hallways and a front yard that look like yours, then taken to sidewalks, pet stores and parks. A dog that only behaves inside a training building has learned a building. A dog that holds a sit while a cart rattles past in a hardware store has learned a skill.

  • Many repetitions a day instead of a weekly hour
  • Skills built in a home, then proofed in public
  • One trainer who sees the whole dog, including the 6 a.m. version
  • A go-home session that transfers the work to you

The reasoning

Three factors decide whether the results last past the first month.

The dog. Obedience and manners respond in any healthy dog. Reactivity and aggression respond too, but they are reduced and managed rather than erased, and a trainer who promises otherwise is selling. Age matters less than people think; a seven-year-old Lab from Fairfield learns place about as fast as a one-year-old, he just needs a softer surface and shorter sessions.

The length. One week, our Silver program at $1,500, is a foundation or a refresher. Two weeks installs obedience. Three weeks is where behavior changes, because the third week is spent proofing in public rather than teaching. Six weeks, the VIP program, is for off-leash reliability. Matching the length to the problem is most of the decision.

The handover. Every result depends on what happens after the dog gets in your car. The go-home session and the follow-up lessons exist because a dog trained by us and then handled the old way drifts back within weeks. That drift is not the program failing. It is the program ending early.

  • Obedience: reliable in almost any healthy dog past the puppy stage
  • Reactivity and aggression: reduced and managed, never erased
  • Program length matched to the problem, not the budget
  • Family rules kept after the go-home session

For your dog

Puppies, adults and hard cases get three different honest answers.

Puppies under four months do not belong in a live-in program. Their job is house rules, crate and potty, handling and calm exposure, and the household is the one that needs training. That is what the Puppy Development Bundle is for, four private sessions for $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home. From about four to five months a puppy can hold a day of structure and a stay starts to pay.

Adult dogs with pulling, jumping, door bolting, counter surfing or no recall are the classic Gold or Platinum candidates, and this is where board and train works best. Hard cases, meaning dogs that lunge at other dogs on the Bridgeland trails or have growled at a guest, need Platinum at minimum, because the behavior modification, field trips and unlimited private lessons are what turn a stay into a lasting change.

Houston reality

The proof is a sit at the store on Fry Road and a calm front door in your own house.

Our field trips are the exam. A dog that walks past the live animal aisle in a pet store on 290, holds a down beside a patio table at Towne Lake and ignores a cyclist on the Josey Lake trail has passed tests a training yard cannot set. From May through September those trips run early morning and evening, with a pavement check first, and the midday work moves into air-conditioned aisles and the house.

Then it is your turn. The first two weeks at home decide whether the new dog stays. Keep the schedule below and the work holds; skip it and you will be texting us in month two. Families in Katy or Tomball are 25 to 35 minutes from the training home, so a follow-up lesson is an easy trip, and central Houston is 30 to 45.

1

Use the crate and place bed exactly as shown at the go-home session for the first 14 days.

2

Walk with the same leash and tool the dog graduated on, at the same position.

3

Make every door, gate and car a wait-and-release, including the back door.

4

Feed after a short obedience rep so meals keep paying for behavior.

5

Hold guests at the door until the dog is on place, every visit.

6

Book the included follow-up lesson within three weeks of going home.

The programs

Choose by the problem you have, not the price you hoped for.

Gold, two weeks for $2,500, handles sit and stay, place and stay, loose leash, door boundaries, jumping, pulling and impulse control, with a go-home session, one more lesson and lifelong support. Platinum, three weeks for $3,750, adds down and stay, a structured heel, reactivity and aggression work, field trips, a comprehensive handover, unlimited private lessons and lifetime support. VIP, six weeks for $10,000, is service-dog-level obedience and full off-leash reliability, with the e-collar, transport and in-home lessons included.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Does board and train work for every dog?

For obedience and manners, nearly every healthy dog past the puppy stage learns the skills. For reactivity and aggression the honest answer is that the behavior is reduced and managed, not deleted, and the family's handling afterward matters as much as the stay. Dogs with a medical cause for their behavior need a vet visit before any program.

How long do the results last?

As long as the rules do. A dog that goes home to the same structure he learned in Cypress keeps the behavior, and the follow-up lessons and lifetime support exist to reset anything that slips. A dog that goes home to the old routine drifts back within a few weeks, which is the most common reason a program appears to fail.

Why not just do private lessons?

Private lessons, $160 at the training home or $220 in your house, work well when the problem is one specific skill and you have time to practice daily. Board and train is for a dog with several habits to rebuild at once, or a family whose schedule cannot carry the daily repetitions. Many families do a stay, then lessons.

Will my dog listen to me or only to the trainer?

The dog listens to whoever gives the command the way he was taught, which is what the go-home session is for. Our trainer hands you the leash and coaches you through every skill until the dog performs it for you the same way. The extra lesson in Gold and the unlimited lessons in Platinum keep that transfer going.
