Daycare or board and train

Board and train vs daycare in Houston: which one changes the dog

Houston has excellent daycares, and for the right dog they are a gift. They are also the most common thing owners try before calling us about jumping, pulling and reactivity, because a tired dog looks like a trained dog for about an hour.

Two different jobs

Daycare manages the day; board and train changes the dog.

Think of daycare as a service for the hours you are away and board and train as a service for the dog you have when you get home. Daycare is a place to run, play, be supervised and be social while you work. Board and train is a period of daily instruction with one trainer, where the dog learns sit, place, heel, door manners and calm around triggers, followed by a session where that learning is handed to you.

The clearest test is what your dog does on a Saturday. A daycare dog on Saturday is rested and behaves the way he always has, because no one taught him anything different. A board and train graduate on Saturday holds place while you make breakfast and walks past the neighbor's dog on a loose leash, because those were the skills that filled 14 or 21 days.

  • Daycare: exercise, play, company, supervision
  • Board and train: new behaviors, structure, calm
  • Daycare is priced by the day; training by the program
  • Both can belong in the same dog's life

What daycare does well

For a social dog with too much energy, daycare solves a real Houston problem.

From May through September the pavement in Houston is too hot for a midday walk, and a dog with a working owner can go from a 6am walk to a 7pm walk with nothing in between. Indoor daycare fills that gap with movement, play and people. That is a genuine service, and for a confident, dog-social Lab or doodle it is often the difference between a settled evening and a wrecked couch.

Daycare also keeps a social dog social. Regular, supervised play with other dogs maintains the skills a dog learned as a puppy. What daycare does not do, and does not claim to do, is teach your dog a structured walk, a down-stay when the doorbell rings, or a new feeling about the dog behind the fence on your street. Group play cannot teach those things because the dog is practicing excitement, not calm.

What board and train changes

Board and train swaps play for practice, in the places where the problem shows up.

In our trainer's home your dog's day is built from structured walks, short obedience sessions, place with duration, crate rest and, in Platinum and VIP, field trips into pet and hardware stores, sidewalks, parks and the lake. Calm is treated as a skill and rehearsed as often as sit. Photo and video updates arrive every Monday, Wednesday and Friday so you can watch the dog changing rather than take it on faith.

Behavior modification is the part no daycare offers. A dog who lunges at other dogs on the Bridgeland trails is worked at a distance he can handle and brought closer over days, with a handler who has done this with hundreds of dogs. A dog who bolts through the front door learns to wait at real thresholds. Then our team hands you the leash at the go-home session and teaches you the same handling.

  • One trainer from our team, every day
  • Field trips into real Houston places
  • Ends with a go-home session and follow-up

The decision

Answer six questions and the choice usually makes itself.

Owners rarely need both at the same time, and they often need them in a particular order. Work through these questions in an evening before you spend anything. Be honest on the third one, because it is the one that separates a dog who needs a nap from a dog who needs a plan, and it is the first thing our team asks on the phone.

1

Write the one thing you want different in 30 days. If the word is tired, calmer at night or less destructive, daycare may be enough.

2

If the word is jumping, pulling, barking, lunging, bolting or anxious, no amount of exercise will fix it. That is training.

3

Ask how your dog behaves after a full daycare day. Still jumps on guests at 7pm? The problem is not energy.

4

Ask how your dog does on leash near other dogs. A dog who plays fine in a group but lunges on the sidewalk is reactive and needs behavior modification, not more play.

5

Check the calendar. July 4 and New Year's fireworks, and a hurricane season that runs June 1 to November 30, are easier with a dog who has a trained place and crate.

Side by side

Use daycare for the days and board and train for the dog, in that order.

The best sequence for a busy Houston family is training first, daycare after. A Gold or Platinum graduate arrives at daycare knowing how to settle, wait at gates and walk past other dogs calmly, which makes him easier for staff and safer in a group. The reverse order, daycare first and training later, tends to produce a dog who is very good at play and still cannot hold a sit at the vet.

Whatever you choose, keep heartworm prevention current year-round. Houston mosquitoes do not take a season off, and a dog who spends his days around other dogs is spending them around mosquitoes too. Ask any daycare about its vaccine and prevention requirements, and ask any trainer the same question. A good answer to both is quick and specific, and a vague one tells you something.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Is daycare bad for a reactive dog?

It is not bad, but it is the wrong tool. A dog who is reactive on leash may play well off leash in a group, and that play does not carry over to the sidewalk. In some dogs the daily excitement makes leash reactivity worse. Reactivity is handled with controlled exposure and structure, which is what the Platinum program is for.

Can my dog go to daycare after board and train?

Yes, and many graduates do. Keep the structure our trainers teach at the go-home session on daycare days: a structured walk before drop-off, a calm entry, place when you get home. Choose a daycare that gives dogs rest periods, and skip it on days the dog seems overstimulated.

Does board and train include play and exercise?

Yes. Dogs in the training home walk daily, go on field trips in Platinum and VIP, and work at the lake. Exercise is part of the day, but it is structured exercise with a purpose. The dog also learns to rest in a crate and on place, which is a skill most daycare dogs never practice.

Is board and train just expensive boarding?

No. Boarding keeps a dog safe while you are away. Board and train is a training program that happens to include lodging. At Best Dog University the dog lives in the trainer's home, trains several times a day, and you receive photo and video updates three times a week and a go-home session at the end.

Which is cheaper, daycare or board and train?

Daycare is cheaper on any given day and more expensive over a year if the behavior never changes. Board and train at Best Dog University is a one-time $1,500 to $10,000 program. If you are paying for daycare mainly because your dog is hard to live with, the math usually favors fixing the behavior once.
