Doodles, trained honestly

Board and train for doodles in Houston: goldendoodles to labradoodles

Doodles are the most common dog on the Bridgeland trails and one of the most common dogs in our home. They are smart, soft, athletic and social, and they are marketed as easy, which is how a 65-pound goldendoodle ends up dragging a family across a parking lot at fourteen months. This page is about what doodles actually need and which stay gives it to them.

Who brings a doodle

Doodle board and train fits the family whose dog is too much of a good thing.

The goldendoodle who greets with his whole body. He is friendly to a fault: jumping on guests, on kids, on the vet, on strangers at the Towne Lake path. Nobody wants to punish a happy dog, so nobody has. Gold's no-jump greeting, place command and impulse control give him a way to be happy with four feet on the floor, and the go-home session gives you a way to keep it.

The labradoodle who cannot settle. Bred from two working retrievers, the labradoodle often has more drive than the family expected, and with no job he paces, chews, barks at the window and shadows you from room to room. The off switch is a trained skill. Two weeks of crate calm and place with duration in our home is where it gets built.

The doodle who has started to react or nip. Sound sensitivity, leash reactivity to other dogs and a snappy edge when handled or groomed show up in some doodles around adolescence, especially the bernedoodles and the more poodle-heavy crosses. That is behavior work, not manners, and Platinum's three weeks with field trips and behavior modification is the honest program for it.

  • Jumping, mouthing and full-body greetings
  • No off switch: pacing, shadowing, barking at the window
  • Pulling on the trail and lunging toward every dog and person
  • Reactivity, anxiety or nipping during grooming and handling

A doodle's stay

The stay teaches a doodle that calm gets him what he wants, and it uses his brain to do it.

Drop-off at the Cypress home or by $250 transport, with his food and his records. Doodles settle fast in a house because they are people dogs, and that is used: the first days are crate calm, place with duration and meals earned with a sit, so the dog learns quickly that the person he wants attention from gives it for calm and withholds it for bouncing.

The leash and the greeting are the middle of the stay. Doodles are strong and enthusiastic, and the tool is chosen for the individual dog under balanced training, usually something light he respects. Greetings are rehearsed at the door with excited handlers until four feet stay down without a word. Platinum doodles take it to the trail, the store and a patio, and for the reactive ones, past other dogs at a controlled distance.

1

Days 1 to 3: crate calm, place with duration and marker words; a baseline video of the greeting and the walk to compare at the end.

2

Days 4 to 6: sit/stay and place/stay proofed with people moving, doors opening and food on the counter; the leash introduced with a tool sized to the dog.

3

Days 7 to 9: door boundaries and the no-jump greeting, rehearsed with strangers at the door and a handler acting like an excited child.

4

Days 10 to 12: loose leash past dogs, joggers and bikes on the neighborhood streets; impulse control at the bowl and the truck; handling drills for grooming.

5

Days 13 to 14: proofing with a second handler and the go-home session for Gold dogs; the additional lesson follows a couple of weeks later.

6

Days 15 to 21 (Platinum): trail, store and patio field trips, behavior modification for reactivity, and the comprehensive handover.

Price and inclusions

A doodle's stay is $2,500 for Gold or $3,750 for Platinum, the same as any dog his size.

Gold at $2,500 buys two weeks of sit/stay, place/stay, loose leash walking, door boundaries, jumping, pulling and impulse control, with a go-home session, one additional lesson and lifelong support. Platinum at $3,750 buys three weeks and adds down/stay, structured heel, behavior modification, field trips, a comprehensive handover and unlimited private lessons, which for a doodle who reacts on the trail means a trainer available every time it resurfaces.

The $250 reservation deposit. Because doodles are so common in northwest Houston, doodle families are a large share of the limited spots in the home at any time. After the free consultation, a $250 deposit through Reserve Your Spot holds the dates and is applied toward the program. Transport is $250 and includes the first lesson in your home, which is where the greeting rule has to hold.

  • Same price as any dog; no coat or breed surcharge
  • Free-Style and Agility at $2,500 for the doodle who already has manners and needs an outlet
  • $250 transport with the first lesson at your door
  • $250 deposit, credited to the total

Houston specifics

A doodle's coat and energy collide with Houston summer, so the stay plans around both.

A full doodle coat in July is a heat problem, and an athletic doodle with no outlet in the heat is a behavior problem. From May through September the outdoor sessions run before 8am and after 7pm, the walks stay on grass and shaded sidewalks around Bridgeland and Fairfield, and the energy goes into indoor place, obedience blocks and, for Platinum dogs, air-conditioned store trips. The AVMA's heat guidance sets the limits our trainers work inside.

Doodles also love water, and Houston water is not always safe. Retention ponds and bayous can hold alligators, and lake work in a stay stays on the path and the long line for that reason. Heartworm prevention should be current at drop-off because mosquitoes here do not take the winter off, and a doodle who is going to spend his life on the trails in Cypress and Katy needs that habit from the start.

  • Summer sessions at dawn and dusk, on grass, with a coat-aware schedule
  • Trail proofing on the paths at Towne Lake and Josey Lake
  • Water work on a long line only, because of alligators in ponds and bayous
  • Cypress, Katy and Bridgeland doodle families are 10 to 35 minutes from the training home

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Are doodles hard to train?

No, but they are easy to under-train. Doodles are intelligent and eager, which makes them learn fast and also learn the wrong things fast: jumping works, pulling works, whining works. A stay in our home replaces those payoffs with calm ones. The challenge with a doodle is consistency at home, which the go-home session sets up.

Which program is right for a goldendoodle?

For most goldendoodles it is Gold, at $2,500 for two weeks, because the usual problems are jumping, pulling and no off switch. A goldendoodle who has become reactive to other dogs, anxious, or snappy during grooming needs Platinum at $3,750. Our trainers decide on the free phone consultation after hearing what the dog does at home.

Can a doodle handle the Houston heat during a stay?

Yes, on the summer schedule. A doodle's coat means outdoor work happens at the cool ends of the day only, from May through September, with the rest of the training indoors. Our trainers watch for heavy panting and slow down before it becomes a problem. Keeping the coat trimmed in summer helps, and your groomer is the right person to ask about length.

My doodle is nippy when he is brushed or has his feet touched. Can that be trained?

Usually, and it is a Platinum job. Handling tolerance is built with the dog in a down, touching ears, paws and coat for a moment and rewarding calm, then longer. It is paired with the impulse control and structure the rest of the stay builds. The handover shows you and, if you want, your groomer how to keep it.

How much does board and train for a doodle cost in Houston?

$2,500 for the two-week Gold, $3,750 for the three-week Platinum, and $2,500 for the two-week Free-Style or Agility programs if the dog already has basic obedience. Door-to-door transport adds $250 and brings the first lesson to your house. A $250 reservation deposit holds the dates and is applied toward the program.
