Elevators, hallways, neighbors

Board and train for apartment dogs in Houston: elevators, hallways and neighbors

An apartment dog has no yard to burn off energy in, a front door that opens onto a hallway full of strangers, and neighbors on three sides who hear every bark. The margin for error is smaller than in a house in Katy. Board and train for an apartment dog is about building calm in confined spaces and a walk that works on a crowded sidewalk.

Who lives in an apartment

Apartment board and train fits the dog whose problems happen in shared spaces.

The hallway barker. Every footstep outside the door, every neighbor's key, every delivery gets a volley of barking through the wall. In a Midtown or Montrose building that becomes a lease problem fast. Place and a calm boundary at the door, built over two weeks of Gold, is what replaces the barking with a dog who looks at you instead of the door.

The elevator lunger. A dog who is fine on the street and a mess in an elevator, a stairwell or a garage is reacting to the space, not the trigger. Platinum's field trips are the only honest way to fix that, because the elevator has to be practiced in an elevator. Our trainers take Platinum dogs into parking garages, tight store aisles and stairwells on purpose.

The high-energy dog with no yard. A young Lab or doodle in a one-bedroom on Allen Parkway does not have a fence to run behind, so every ounce of energy comes out on the walk or on the furniture. Structure gives that dog an off switch indoors and a walk that actually tires him out because he is working, not dragging.

  • Barking at hallway noise and shared walls
  • Lunging or freezing in elevators, stairwells and garages
  • Pulling through lobbies and across busy sidewalks
  • No yard, no off switch, and a lease that depends on both

The stay for a dog with no yard

The house teaches calm indoors first, then the field trips take it into elevators and garages.

Drop-off at the Cypress training home or a $250 pick-up from your building; our team meets you at the lobby or the garage, whichever is easier. The first days build the indoor foundation an apartment dog most needs: place with duration, quiet in the crate while people move around the house, a wait at the front door that holds while it opens onto a stranger.

Then the walk. Apartment dogs learn the structured walk on the sidewalks around the home, where fence dogs and joggers stand in for the neighbors on your floor. Platinum dogs take it further: heel through a store on a Saturday, a down/stay in a parking garage with cars echoing, a calm ride in an elevator at a store that has one. The go-home session, with transport, happens in your building so the hallway and the elevator are part of the lesson.

1

Days 1 to 3: crate calm with household noise, place with duration, marker words, and a baseline video of the dog at a door with a stranger outside.

2

Days 4 to 7: door boundaries that hold while the door opens onto a person, sit/stay and place/stay in the hallway of the house, and quiet at window noise.

3

Days 8 to 10: the structured walk on neighborhood sidewalks past dogs and people, with tight-space heel drills in the garage and between parked cars.

4

Days 11 to 14: impulse control at the door and the leash; Gold dogs finish with the go-home session and a plan for the building.

5

Days 15 to 19 (Platinum): field trips to a store with an elevator, a parking garage, a busy sidewalk and a patio, proofing calm in confined spaces.

6

Days 20 to 21 (Platinum): proofing with a second handler and the comprehensive handover, at your building if you chose transport.

Price and inclusions

An apartment dog's stay is $2,500 or $3,750, and the field trips are the reason Platinum is usual.

Gold, at $2,500 for two weeks, covers sit/stay, place/stay, loose leash, door boundaries, jumping, pulling and impulse control, with a go-home session, one additional lesson and lifelong support. Platinum, at $3,750 for three weeks, adds down/stay, the structured heel, behavior modification, field trips, a comprehensive handover and unlimited private lessons, and the field trips are what put the dog in an elevator before you do.

The $250 reservation deposit. A $250 deposit through Reserve Your Spot holds the dates and is applied to the program. Transport at $250 is the option most apartment families take, because a dog who has not yet been trained is hard to get through a lobby and into a car, and the return trip ends with the first lesson at your door.

  • Field trips into garages, elevators and tight aisles are a Platinum inclusion
  • $250 transport with a first lesson in your building
  • $250 deposit, applied to the program total
  • Private lessons at your apartment are $220 if you want a follow-up on your floor

Houston specifics

Houston apartment dogs deal with hot garages, bayou trails and fireworks bouncing off towers.

The nearest green space for many apartment dogs is Buffalo Bayou Park, the Heights hike-and-bike trail or a pocket park in Midtown, and from May through September the walk there is on pavement that fails the hand test by mid-morning. Our go-home plan for apartment families is built around a dawn walk, indoor place work through the day and an evening walk after 7pm, with parking-garage concrete treated as the hazard it is.

Fireworks on July 4 and New Year's Eve echo between buildings, and an apartment dog cannot retreat to a back bedroom far from the noise. Crate and place calm are built into every stay for that reason, following the AVMA's fireworks guidance. Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, adds the question of evacuating from a high-rise with a dog, and a crate-calm dog makes that manageable.

  • Buffalo Bayou, the Heights trail and Midtown pocket parks as the real walk routes
  • Garage concrete and summer pavement handled by dawn and evening timing
  • Crate calm for fireworks between towers
  • Inner-loop and Uptown families are about 30 to 45 minutes from Cypress; transport is $250

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Can board and train fix barking at hallway noise?

Usually, yes. Hallway barking is a dog who has never been given an alternative to alerting at every sound. Place with duration, a calm boundary at the door and impulse control give him one, and those are core Gold skills. The go-home session shows you how to run it in your unit, and the additional lesson tightens it once the neighbors have tested it.

How do you train a dog for elevators if you work from a house?

On Platinum field trips. Our trainers take the dog to stores with elevators, parking garages and stairwells and work heel, sit and calm in each, on leash, at a distance the dog can handle first. The indoor foundation is built at the training home, and the confined-space proofing happens in real confined spaces.

How much is board and train for an apartment dog in Houston?

$2,500 for the two-week Gold or $3,750 for the three-week Platinum, with Platinum the more common choice for apartment dogs because it includes field trips. Transport is $250 and includes the first lesson at your apartment. A $250 reservation deposit holds the dates and is applied to the program.

My dog has no yard. Will he get enough exercise during the stay?

Yes, and he will learn that exercise is structured, not frantic. Apartment dogs walk twice a day on the neighborhood streets, work obedience in the yard and the house, and rest on place and in the crate between sessions. A dog who is working his brain on a walk tires faster than a dog dragging you around a block.

Will the handover happen at my apartment?

If you choose the $250 transport, yes. Our team returns the dog and runs the go-home session at your door, in your hallway and on your sidewalk, which for an apartment dog is where the lesson belongs. Without transport, the handover is at the training home in Cypress and you rehearse the building yourself with the written plan.
