Best dog trainer in Houston: how to compare trainers honestly

Type the phrase into a search and you get listicles and ads. None of them met your dog. This page gives you the questions that separate a trainer from an expensive kennel, so you can compare anyone, including us, on the things that actually decide the outcome.

Question one

Where does the dog actually live during the program?

A board and train in a home with a limited number of dogs and one trainer is a different product from a kennel block with rotating staff, even at the same price. Dogs learn where they are. A dog trained in a run gets very good at run behavior and walks into your kitchen with the old rules intact.

Ask to see where the dog sleeps, how many dogs are there at once, and who is in the building at night. A good answer is specific. At Best Dog University the answer is our trainer's home in Cypress, a few dogs at a time, and the trainer who lives there.

  • Whether you can see it

Question two

Who trains the dog, and who hands it back?

Many programs are sold by an owner and delivered by staff. That is not automatically bad, but you should know, because the person who trained your dog is the person who should coach you at the end. If the trainer at handover is meeting your dog for the first time, the handover is a demonstration, not a transfer.

Ask who will hold the leash on day one and on the last day. At Best Dog University it is the same trainer start to finish, with 16 years and 900 dogs behind the team and a specialty in reactivity, anxiety and aggression.

Question three

What exactly do you learn, and what support comes after?

A trained dog with an untrained household unwinds in weeks. The value of any program is decided in the handover session and the months after it. Ask what the handover covers, whether it can happen in your home, and what lessons or support are included when something slips.

Best Dog University's programs end with a go-home session; Gold adds a lesson and lifelong support, Platinum includes unlimited private lessons, and VIP includes an in-home handover and unlimited in-home lessons. Whatever trainer you choose, get that part in writing.

1

Ask what the handover session includes and how long it runs.

2

Ask whether the handover can happen at your house.

3

Ask what follow-up lessons are included and for how long.

4

Ask what happens if the dog regresses in month two.

5

Ask to speak to a family whose dog finished six months ago.

Question four

Are the prices public, and what do they include?

When prices only appear after a sales call, the call is the product. A trainer confident in the value of a program publishes it. Compare what is included at each price: updates, field trips, transport, the handover, lessons afterwards. A cheaper program with no handover is not cheaper.

Every Best Dog University price is on the site: $1,500 for one week, $2,500 for two, $3,750 for three, $10,000 for the six-week VIP, private lessons at $160 or $220, the puppy bundle at $550 or $750, and transportation at $250.

What to compareWhy it matters
Price published before any callConfidence in the program, and no pressure on the phone
Updates during the stayYou should see the training, not just hear about it
Field trips in publicCalm in a training yard is not calm at the store
Handover and lessons includedThe part that decides whether it lasts
Transport optionDoor-to-door matters for Katy, Woodlands and Spring families

Question five

Where is the training proofed, and can you see it?

Ask for photos and video of the trainer's own dogs in public places, not stock images. Ask whether field trips happen and where. A Houston trainer who never works on a real sidewalk in July has not trained a dog for Houston.

Best Dog University posts updates every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during a stay, and the gallery shows dogs in stores along 290, on Cypress sidewalks, at the lake and on park benches. Then ask the same of anyone else you are considering. The best trainer for your dog is the one whose answers you can verify.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Who is the best dog trainer in Houston?

Nobody can honestly answer that for a dog they have not met. The best trainer is the one whose format fits your dog and who can tell you where the dog lives, who trains it, what you learn, what it costs and where it is proofed. Ask those five questions of everyone, including us.

Do dog trainers in Houston need a license or certification?

Texas does not license dog trainers, and certifications vary widely in what they mean. Judge a trainer by verifiable results with dogs like yours, the specificity of their answers and what they include after the program, rather than by a certificate alone.

Is a home-based trainer better than a facility?

For behavior that has to transfer to your house, a home environment has a real advantage: the dog trains at real doors, with real guests and real routines. Facilities can produce obedience on a training floor; the question is always what happens in your kitchen afterwards.

How do I check a trainer's reviews honestly?

Read the reviews that mention the program, the problem and the time since it ended. Reviews from the pick-up day are happy by default; reviews from six months later tell you whether the training lasted. Ask the trainer for a family you can call.

What does the free phone consultation with our team cover?

A direct call where our team listens to what is happening, asks about the history and the breed, and recommends a program or tells you a shorter option, private lessons or even a vet visit is the better first step. No cost, no obligation.
