Every price, one table

Dog training in Houston runs from $160 for a single lesson to $10,000 for a six-week program.

Here is the complete Best Dog University price list, and nothing on it is an estimate. Private lessons are priced per session, the puppy bundle per four sessions, and board and train per program, with the go-home session and any follow-up lessons already inside the number. Transportation is the only add-on, and it is optional for every program except VIP, where it is included.

Prices in the Houston area vary widely from trainer to trainer, and many are never published. Ask any trainer for a written price before you commit, along with a written list of what that price includes. When you compare, compare the whole package: days of training, who does the training, and what support you get once the dog is home.

What moves the number

You are paying for trainer time, the depth of the problem and what comes after.

The biggest driver is days of a trainer's attention. A private lesson costs $160 because it is one session. A Platinum costs $3,750 because your dog lives in our trainer's house for 21 days, trains several times a day, and rides to stores, sidewalks and the lake. Our trainers do all the handling themselves, so every hour in every program is theirs.

The second driver is what has to change. Teaching a friendly Lab from Fairfield to stop pulling is a manners job and fits a short program. Changing how a German shepherd feels about strangers at the fence is behavior modification and takes Platinum or VIP, because the dog needs repeated, controlled exposure to the real trigger. The third driver is what is included afterward: one extra lesson with Gold, unlimited private lessons with Platinum, and the e-collar, transport and unlimited in-home lessons with VIP.

  • Days of our trainers' time
  • Manners job or behavior change
  • Lessons and support included afterward
  • Tools included, such as the VIP e-collar

Price per day

Divide a board and train price by its days and the longer programs look different.

Owners usually compare program prices side by side. A better habit is to divide by training days. Silver is $1,500 for seven days, a little over $214 a day. Gold is $2,500 for 14 days and Platinum is $3,750 for 21 days, and both land near $179 a day. The three-week program costs no more per day than the two-week one, and it adds field trips, behavior modification and unlimited private lessons.

VIP is $10,000 over 42 days, roughly $238 a day, and that figure carries the e-collar, transport and unlimited in-home lessons with our trainers. Per-day math will not tell you which program your dog needs. It will tell you whether a price is high because the work is deep or high because the days are few. The program-by-program breakdown is on the board and train cost page.

Deciding what to spend

Price the problem before you price the program.

Before you call anyone, spend twenty minutes on the questions below. They take the emotion out of a price and turn it into a plan. Most Houston owners who work through them find they need less than they feared, or that what they thought was a leash problem is really a reactivity problem that a cheap fix would not touch.

Two of the questions surprise people. The handler count matters because a dog trained by one adult and undone by four others has not been trained. The hours question matters because private lessons are homework with a coach, and board and train is the coach doing the homework for you. Answer both honestly and the right price tends to show up on its own.

1

Write down the three behaviors you most want gone in 30 days, in plain words: jumps on guests, drags me down the sidewalk, barks at the window.

2

Sort each one. Pulling, jumping, no recall and door bolting are manners. Lunging at dogs, growling at guests and panic when you leave are behavior problems.

3

Count the handlers. If three adults and two kids handle the dog, a $220 in-home lesson reaches everyone at once and is often the better buy.

4

Be honest about your hours. Private lessons only work if you practice ten minutes twice a day. If you cannot, board and train does the repetitions for you.

5

Check the calendar. From May to September outdoor lessons run early or late because of the heat, and hurricane season is June 1 to November 30, so a field trip program is easier to book in cooler months.

When cheaper is right

The cheaper option is the right one more often than you would expect.

Our team recommends the smaller program whenever it will do the job. A puppy under four months does not need a board and train; the $550 Puppy Development Bundle covers sit, place, recall, crate and potty guidance across four sessions. A dog who knows the basics and only needs a refresher on leash walking and door manners fits the one-week Silver at $1,500.

A single problem that lives in one room, like counter surfing or barking at the front window, is usually a $220 in-home lesson and two weeks of homework. Owners in Katy, The Heights or The Woodlands who enjoy training and have the time can get a long way on $160 lessons at the Cypress home, a 25 to 45 minute drive. Where cheaper is wrong: reactivity, aggression and anxiety. Those take days of controlled exposure with an experienced handler, and stacking lessons rarely gets there. That is what Platinum and VIP are built for.

  • Puppy under 4 months: the $550 bundle
  • Basics known, needs a refresher: Silver, $1,500
  • One problem in one room: an in-home lesson, $220
  • Reactivity or aggression: Platinum or VIP, not a lesson pack

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How much is a private dog training lesson in Houston?

A private one-on-one lesson is $160 at the training home in Cypress or $220 anywhere in the service area, including Katy, Spring, Tomball and The Woodlands. Both are taught by the Best Dog University team. The in-home price covers the trainer's drive and lets them work on the problem where it happens: your kitchen, your front door or your street.

How much does puppy training cost?

The Puppy Development Bundle is $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home: four private sessions of 45 to 60 minutes for puppies under four months, covering sit, place, stay, recall, crate and potty guidance, socialization, and nipping and jumping prevention. It is the least expensive way to start a dog right.

Is transportation included in the price?

Only in the VIP program. For every other program, door-to-door pick-up and return anywhere in the service area is $250 and that fee includes the first lesson in your home on the day your dog returns. Many families from Katy, The Woodlands and central Houston choose it for the in-home lesson as much as the drive.

Why is there no group class price on this list?

Because Best Dog University does not run group classes. Our team works with one dog or one family at a time, in private lessons or in a board and train in our trainer's home. If a class is the right fit for your dog, and for some confident, social dogs it is, the group classes versus private lessons page explains how to tell.
