How long it holds

What is duration in dog training?

Most dogs learn to sit in a day. Far fewer learn to stay sitting, and the gap between those two is duration. Here is what the word means, how it is built and where Houston families feel the difference.

The meaning

Duration means the dog holds the position until you say it is over, not until it decides.

A sit is a position. A sit with duration is a promise: the dog stays there until it hears a release word, however long that takes. Without a release word, the dog has to guess when the behavior ends, and most dogs guess early. They sit, collect the treat and bounce up, because nobody told them the sit was still running.

That is why duration starts with the release. Pick one word, such as free or okay, and use it every time the dog is allowed to move. The command now has a beginning and an end, and the dog learns that the end belongs to you.

  • A position with a clear end
  • One release word, every time
  • The handler ends it, not the dog
  • Without a release, dogs guess early

How it grows

It is built in seconds, paid while the dog is still holding, and stretched slowly.

The most common mistake is paying the dog after it gets up. If the treat arrives as the dog stands, the dog learns that standing is the paid moment. Instead, the reward goes to the dog while it is still in position, calmly and at its level, and the release comes afterward, often with nothing more than praise.

Build it in small, uneven steps: three seconds, five, two, eight, four, twelve. Mixing easy reps into harder ones keeps the dog succeeding and stops it predicting when the pay arrives. When the dog breaks, the step was too big. Put it back in position without fuss and ask for less next time.

  • Reward while the dog is still in position
  • Release after the reward
  • Mix short holds with longer ones
  • A break means the step was too big

Building it on place

Place is the easiest way to see duration grow, from a few seconds to a whole meal.

A raised bed gives the dog a clear boundary, which makes it easy for both of you to see when the stay is broken. Keep sessions to a few minutes.

1

Send the dog to its bed and reward it the moment all four feet are on.

2

Count three seconds, reward again while it is still on the bed, then release.

3

Stretch the holds unevenly over several short sessions: five, three, ten, six, fifteen seconds.

4

Once the dog holds half a minute, sit down nearby and read or watch TV between rewards.

5

Space the rewards out as the hold stretches to several minutes.

6

Use it for real: the bed during your dinner, with an occasional reward delivered to the dog.

Real life

In Houston life, duration is the dog on its bed through dinner, at the curb and on a patio.

The families who value duration most are the ones who take their dogs out. A down that lasts through a coffee on a Heights patio, a sit at a busy crossing while a truck goes past on FM 1960, a stay in the vet lobby while the heartworm test comes back: each is duration in a new place, and each starts at home.

Houston's summer makes it more useful still. From May to September, long outdoor walks move to early morning and evening, and duration work on a place bed indoors is how a young dog gets mental exercise on a hot afternoon. During hurricane season, from June 1 to November 30, a dog that can settle and hold still is much easier to manage in a crowded house or a shelter.

At Best Dog University

Every stay from Gold up builds duration, and VIP stretches it furthest.

The two-week Gold program at $2,500 teaches sit and stay and place and stay with real duration, so the dog can settle while guests arrive. The three-week Platinum program at $3,750 adds a down and stay and takes the stays into public places on field trips. The six-week VIP program at $10,000 builds duration stays at a service-dog level, with the handover in your home.

If your dog already knows the commands and simply does not hold them, private lessons, $160 in Cypress or $220 at home, are often enough: our trainer shows you the reward timing and the release, which is where most home training goes wrong.

  • Gold, $2,500: sit and stay, place and stay
  • Platinum, $3,750: adds down and stay, in public
  • VIP, $10,000: duration stays at service-dog level
  • Lessons: timing and the release

The programs

Duration is part of every stay from two weeks up.

Gold builds the stays at home, Platinum takes them into public places, and VIP makes them reliable anywhere.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How long should my dog be able to stay?

It depends on your life. For most families the useful goal is a dog that can hold place through a meal and a down on a patio for as long as a coffee takes. Build toward the situations you actually live in, a few seconds at a time.

What is a release word, and do I need one?

A release word tells the dog the behavior is over, such as free or okay. Yes, you need one. Without it the dog decides when the sit ends, and it usually decides early. Use the same word every time and never let the dog release itself.

My dog holds a stay beside me but not when I step back. Why?

That is distance, not duration, and it is a separate skill. A dog that holds a minute with you beside it may not hold two seconds as you step back. Build duration with you close, then add distance on its own, one step at a time, with shorter holds while you do.

Can a puppy learn duration?

Yes, in small doses. A young puppy can learn to hold a sit for a few seconds and to wait for its food bowl, and those short holds lay the foundation. Keep sessions very short and end while the puppy is still succeeding.

Should I keep rewarding once the dog knows it?

Keep rewarding, but less often and less predictably. A dog on place during dinner can get a reward now and then, delivered to the bed. Rewards that disappear completely tend to take the behavior with them, so a surprise treat on the bed every so often is cheap insurance.
