The off-leash standard
What does service-dog-level training include?
The phrase gets used loosely online, so it is worth being exact. This page describes what our VIP program builds, what it deliberately does not claim, and which Houston dogs and families it suits.

The short version
It is obedience you can bet on in public, not a certificate.
A dog trained to service-dog level walks off leash at heel through a crowd, recalls the first time across a park, holds a down-stay under a restaurant table for the length of a meal, and moves into a front or center position on cue and stays there. Those are the standards working dogs are held to, and they are the standards the VIP program trains to over six weeks in our Cypress home and across northwest Houston.
What it is not: a service dog. Service dogs are defined by trained tasks that mitigate a person's disability, and that task training is separate work we do not offer. There is no registry or certificate that turns an obedience dog into a service dog. Our VIP graduates are family dogs with exceptional reliability, and we would rather say that plainly than sell a word.
- Off-leash heel and recall around real distractions
- Front and center positioning on cue
- Long duration stays, sit and down
- Calm in stores, patios and crowds
- No task training, no certification

The reasoning
Six weeks, an e-collar and hundreds of public repetitions are what reliability costs.
Reliability is a product of repetitions in varied places with consistent consequences. Platinum at three weeks gets a dog calm and obedient on leash in public. Getting the same dog to that standard with no leash at all takes roughly twice as long, because the dog has to learn that the rules hold when nothing physically holds him. The Mini-Educator e-collar, included in VIP, is the tool that lets our trainers communicate at a distance once the foundation is taught on a leash and a long line.
The public work is where the weeks go. Sidewalks in Bridgeland and Towne Lake, the pet and hardware stores along 290, the boardwalk, park trails at Josey Lake, and in cooler months longer outings. In summer that means dawn and dusk sessions with indoor store work through the heat of the day, because pavement that burns a hand will burn a paw.
What is included
The VIP program covers the tool, the transport and the handover in your home.
The price is $10,000, which works out to about $238 per day for six weeks of daily training, the e-collar, the return trip and every lesson afterward. Compare that with Platinum at $3,750 for three weeks: the jump buys the off-leash standard, the tool and the in-home follow-through. For a family in Katy or The Woodlands, the in-home lessons alone remove a drive of 30 to 45 minutes each way.
The handover is the part we would ask you to weigh most heavily. A dog with this much training is only as reliable as the hands holding the remote, so our trainer spends the go-home session in your house, on your street, teaching you the e-collar and the positions until you are fluent. Then we keep coming back.
| Included in VIP | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Six weeks in our trainer's home | Enough time to build off-leash reliability, not just leash manners |
| Mini-Educator e-collar | The remote communication tool, fitted and taught, yours to keep |
| Transport home | Door-to-door return, no drive to Cypress on go-home day |
| In-home handover | The go-home session happens where the dog will live |
| Unlimited in-home lessons | Our team comes to you for as long as you need |
| Lifetime support | Direct access to our trainers for the life of the dog |
What it means for your dog
It suits some dogs and families much better than others.
Puppies: not yet. Off-leash reliability needs an adult attention span, and a puppy under four months belongs in the Puppy Development Bundle. Adolescents from about a year old, and adult dogs of any breed with a stable temperament, are the VIP candidates. Our trainers see plenty of working breeds in this program, shepherds and Malinois from acreage in Tomball and Magnolia, but a Lab who hikes at Huntsville State Park qualifies just as well.
Hard cases: aggression toward people or dogs is treated in Platinum first. Off-leash freedom for a dog who bites is not a goal we will train toward until the behavior is resolved and stable, and we will say that on the call. Anxiety cases can do very well in VIP once the anxiety itself has been addressed, because structure and clear communication are what those dogs need most.
- Best from about a year old
- Stable temperament first, freedom second
- Working breeds and active families thrive here
- Aggression is resolved in Platinum before VIP
Life after
Off-leash in Houston still means knowing where a leash is required.
Reliability does not change the law. Houston and Harris County leash rules apply in most public spaces, and dog parks have their own posted rules, so check the city and county pages for the current details before you unclip. Where off leash is allowed, on private acreage, at designated areas, on trails that permit it, a VIP graduate is the dog you can trust near water, wildlife and other dogs.
That trust matters here for a specific reason: bayous, retention ponds and lakes carry alligators, and coyotes work the suburban greenbelts at dusk. A recall that works the first time, every time, is a safety tool in this region, not a party trick. We build it for that, and our trainers proof it near water and along tree lines for exactly that reason.
Weeks one and two, roughly: on-leash foundation, positions, duration, e-collar introduction on a long line.
Weeks three and four: public proofing in stores, on sidewalks and at parks, with the leash dropped progressively.
Weeks five and six: full off-leash work with distance, distraction and duration stacked together.
Go-home day: transport home and an in-home handover with the whole family.
Afterward: unlimited in-home lessons until the reliability is yours.
The programs
VIP, and the program most dogs should start with.
VIP is the off-leash standard. Platinum is the leash-reliable standard that resolves behavior first.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Is VIP the same as getting my dog certified as a service dog?
No. There is no certification our program provides, or that any trainer can sell, that makes a dog a service dog. Service dogs are defined by tasks trained for a person's disability. VIP builds service-dog-level obedience and public reliability in a family dog, which is a different and honestly described product.
Why does VIP include an e-collar when Platinum does not?
Because off-leash reliability at distance needs a way to communicate when the leash is gone. The Mini-Educator is introduced on a long line after the commands are taught, at the lowest level the dog notices, and it is included in the price and taught to you at the in-home handover. Platinum works on leash and does not require it.
How is $10,000 justified against Platinum at $3,750?
Six weeks against three, the e-collar, transport home, an in-home go-home session and unlimited lessons at your house rather than in Cypress. Per day it is about $238 against about $179, and the extra buys a standard most family dogs never reach. If leash reliability is your goal, Platinum is the better spend.
Can an older rescue dog reach service-dog level?
Often, yes, if the temperament is stable and health allows the work. Age matters less than clarity: an adult rescue with no history of aggression can learn positions and off-leash recall thoroughly in six weeks. Our team will assess him on the call and, if there are behavior issues first, recommend Platinum ahead of VIP.
Does front and center positioning matter for a pet dog?
More than it sounds. Front is the dog sitting facing you; center is the dog between your feet, both used to keep him close and calm in a crowd, a vet lobby or a busy patio in the Heights. For families with kids or in tight spaces they are the positions you use most.
