Board and train · Honest answer

Is board and train cruel?

This is a fair question, and the people asking it are usually the owners a dog is lucky to have. Here is what makes a program humane or not, what an adjustment period really looks like, and the things our team will not do.

The short version

Cruelty is about housing, method and secrecy, not about the word board and train.

The format itself is neutral. A dog can spend three weeks in a concrete run, taken out twice a day for a session that leans on a tool he does not understand, with a family that sees one edited video at the end. That is a cruel program. The same dog can spend three weeks in a house, sleeping in a crate in a bedroom, eating in a kitchen, walking real sidewalks and learning that good choices pay, with his family watching every other day. That is what ours looks like.

So the question to ask any trainer is not whether board and train is cruel but where the dog lives, who handles him, how he is taught and what you get to see. Vague answers to any of the four are the warning. Ours are specific: a home off US-290 in Cypress, one trainer, balanced training explained in plain language, and updates every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

  • Where the dog sleeps, and whether you can see it
  • Who handles the dog, by name, every day
  • How new behavior is taught before any correction
  • How often you get unedited photo and video

The reasoning

Balanced training means the dog is taught first and held to it second.

Our method rewards the behavior we want and puts fair, consistent boundaries on the behavior we do not, with the tool chosen for the dog rather than the other way round. In practice that means a sit is taught with food and leash guidance until the dog knows it cold, and only then does a refusal get a consequence he already understands. A correction a dog cannot interpret is not training, and we do not use one.

Here is what we do not do. We do not flood a fearful dog by forcing him into the thing he fears. We do not leave dogs in runs while the day passes. We do not put an e-collar on a dog who has not been taught the command without it. We do not hide the method from you or use one tool in the video and another off camera. And we do not take a dog whose problem we think a stay cannot help.

  • Teach with rewards first; boundaries come after understanding
  • No flooding, no kennel-row days, no untaught corrections
  • The tool you see in the updates is the tool we use
  • Dogs we cannot help are told no on the phone consultation

For your dog

The first day or two can be quiet, and that is adjustment, not suffering.

An honest program admits that a dog dropped in a new house is not thrilled on day one. Most are subdued for a day, sometimes two: they eat a little less, watch a lot and sleep hard. Then routine takes over, because a dog reads structure as safety. Puppies under four months are not taken for a stay at all, since that age belongs with the family in the Puppy Development Bundle.

Hard cases are where cruelty is most often excused, and where we are most careful. A dog that has bitten is muzzle-conditioned slowly, not forced. An anxious dog is given distance from triggers and rewarded for calm looking rather than dragged past them. Aggression is managed and reduced with the three-week Platinum program at $3,750, and we say plainly that it is not erased.

Houston reality

In this city the real welfare question is often the heat, and we plan every day around it.

A dog left in an outdoor run at two in the afternoon in August is in danger before he is unhappy. From May to September our outdoor sessions run in early morning and evening, the pavement is checked by hand before a walk, and the middle of the day is spent training inside the house and in the air-conditioned pet and hardware stores along 290 and Fry Road. Water and shade are not extras.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Every dog in the house has his records and an evacuation contact on file from drop-off, and if a storm turns toward Harris County we call the family before we move anyone. Fireworks on July 4 are planned as an indoor evening with food and a crate in the quietest room, the same way we would advise you to run it in Katy or The Woodlands.

1

Ask where the dog sleeps and request a photo of that room.

2

Ask who will handle the dog and how many others are there at once.

3

Ask how a new command is taught before any tool is introduced.

4

Ask how often you will get unedited video, and on which days.

5

Ask what the trainer will refuse to do, and listen for a real list.

6

Ask what happens in a heat emergency or a hurricane evacuation.

The programs

Every program is built the same way; the length changes, the ethics do not.

Gold, two weeks for $2,500, covers manners and obedience and ends with a go-home session, one extra lesson and lifelong support. Platinum, three weeks for $3,750, adds behavior modification, field trips, a comprehensive handover and unlimited private lessons. In both, the dog sleeps in a home, trains in short sessions through the day and rests between them, and the family sees the work as it happens rather than as a highlight reel.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Do you use e-collars or prong collars, and is that cruel?

We use the tool that fits the dog, and only after the command has been taught without it. An e-collar is included in the six-week VIP program because off-leash reliability depends on it; many Gold and Platinum dogs never wear one. Used that way, at low levels, as communication, it is not cruel. Used first, or as punishment, it would be.

Is it cruel to crate a dog during board and train?

No, when the crate is a bedroom rather than a warehouse. Dogs in our home sleep crated at night and rest crated between sessions, the way a well-run family home uses one, and the day is full of walks, training, field trips and time out in the house. A dog crated twenty hours a day with two short breaks is a different matter.

How do I know you are not being harsh when the camera is off?

You cannot know for certain with any trainer, which is why transparency is the test. Our updates every Monday, Wednesday and Friday are unedited, the tool in the video is the tool in use, the go-home session shows you the handling in person, and the same trainer answers your texts throughout. Ask to see all of that before you pay anyone.

Would private lessons be kinder than sending my dog away?

For a young puppy or a dog with one specific problem, private lessons at $160 in Cypress or $220 in your home are the better buy and our team will say so. For a dog rehearsing reactivity or fear every day at home, a stay in a calm house often does less harm than another month of the current routine.
