Board and train · Adding time

Can I extend my dog's board and train?

Families ask this for two reasons: the dog is doing well and they want more, or the dog needs longer than planned. Our answer to both is the same conversation, held early enough to plan.

The short version

Extra time is usually possible, but it is a conversation about space and need, not a button.

Board and train dates are real slots, which is why they are held with a deposit. Extending your dog's stay means the days after it have to be free, or free enough that the mix of dogs in the house still works. So the first answer our team gives is about the calendar: whether the home can keep your dog longer without crowding the next family's dog. Ask as early as you can; a week's notice is easier than a day's.

The second answer is about need. An extension should buy something specific, such as more public repetitions for a reactive dog or duration on place for a dog that still breaks at the doorbell. If the trainer thinks your dog is ready and the rest belongs at home with you, you will hear that too, because more days do not help a dog whose next step is its own front door.

  • Space in the home decides whether it can happen
  • Need decides whether it should
  • The earlier you ask, the easier it is

When it makes sense

The dogs that gain most from extra days are the ones whose work happens in public.

A dog in a manners program usually finishes on time, because sit, place, the leash and the door are installed in two weeks and polished at home. The dogs that most often benefit from more days are reactive, fearful or aggressive dogs, whose progress depends on many calm repetitions around real triggers. For them the last week is the point of the stay, and a little more of it can move the result from better at the training home to better everywhere.

An extension is also sensible when a stay was interrupted, for example by a sick day or a storm that kept everyone indoors, or when a dog arrived with more going on than anyone knew on the phone. In those cases our trainers explain what was lost, what a few extra days would make up, and what they would work on, and then the decision is yours.

  • Reactivity and fear: more public repetitions
  • Aggression: more time with management in place
  • Interrupted stays: sick days or storm days
  • Surprises: more going on than the call revealed

How to ask

Raise it early, ask what the extra days are for, and get the numbers before you agree.

The midpoint of a stay is the natural moment. By then the updates have shown you what is solid and what is half-built, and our trainers have a clear read on the dog. Ask plainly what an extension would add, how many days it would take, and what it would cost. If the answer is that the rest is better done in lessons, that is a straight answer, not a brush-off.

Houston's calendar can make timing tight. Summer and the holiday weeks fill first, and a family moving the go-home session also has to think about the drive to Cypress, about 25 to 45 minutes from most of the service area outside rush hour. If you booked the $250 transport, the return trip is simply rescheduled with the new go-home date.

1

Watch the midpoint updates and note what still looks unsteady.

2

Text our team and ask for a candid progress read.

3

Ask what an extension would add, in days and in skills.

4

Get the price and the new go-home date confirmed with our team.

5

If space is not there, ask which lessons would carry the rest.

6

Confirm the transport date if you booked door-to-door return.

What we do at Best Dog University

We would rather sell you the right length up front than extend a short one.

The best extension is the one you never need, which is why the free consultation call matches the length to the dog. Gold, two weeks at $2,500, suits manners and obedience. Platinum, three weeks at $3,750, is the length for reactivity and aggression, with field trips and unlimited private lessons afterwards. VIP, six weeks at $10,000, is for off-leash reliability. Buying Gold for a Platinum problem and extending later rarely saves anything.

If a stay does end before the dog is where you want it, the support does not end with it. Gold includes one extra lesson and lifelong support, Platinum includes unlimited lessons, and private lessons are $160 at the training home or $220 in your home. Graduates can also board with our team, with training refreshers during the stay.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How much does it cost to add a week?

Our team prices extra days on the phone, because it depends on how many days, which program your dog is in and what the extra time is for. There is no published per-day rate for extensions. Ask before you agree, and our team will give you a number, not a vague answer.

Can I switch from Gold to Platinum partway through?

Ask our team on the phone. Whether a move up makes sense depends on what your dog needs and whether the home has room for the extra week. If your trainer sees a behavior problem that two weeks will not reach, they will raise it with you during the stay rather than wait for the go-home session.

Will my dog lose ground if I cannot extend?

No. What your dog learned stays learned. The go-home session hands you the skills and a routine, and the lessons that follow each program carry the unfinished part at your own door. For many dogs the next step after a stay is practice in their own house anyway, which is where the lessons do their work.

Can I book a second stay later instead?

Yes, families do book a second stay, often after a big change such as a move or a new baby, and a dog that has trained with us before arrives with the foundation in place. Talk to our team about the timing; a short gap with good lessons is often better than an unplanned extension.

Can my dog stay on as a boarder after the program ends?

Boarding with training refreshers is a service for graduates, and a dog that has just finished a program is exactly that. Ask our team about dates and the price, since boarding is quoted per stay. It works well when your travel falls right after the go-home session.
