Leaving before the end
Can i pick my dog up early from board and train?
Most early-pickup questions come from missing the dog, not from a problem. A few come from a schedule change, a storm, or a family emergency. All three deserve a straight answer about what happens to the training when the stay is shortened.

The short version
You can, and we will make it work, but a stay is front-loaded on structure and back-loaded on reliability.
Nothing in a Best Dog University program keeps your dog from you. A phone call is all it takes, and our trainers will arrange a shortened go-home session so you leave with the commands he knows and a plan for the rest. The honest caveat is that a two or three week stay is built in layers, and the last layer is the one families notice most.
Week one is about teaching: place, sit and down with duration, the leash, the door. Week two takes those skills into the pet stores along 290 and onto neighborhood sidewalks, where distractions test them. Week three, in Platinum, is where reactivity work gets its real repetitions and where the handover becomes comprehensive. Leave after day nine and you take home a dog who knows the words but has not yet learned they apply in the parking lot.
- Call first, so a go-home session can be arranged
- Early departure means fewer public repetitions
- Behavior cases lose the most from a shortened stay
- Follow-up lessons still help fill the gap

Why the timing matters
Dogs generalize slowly, and the second half is where generalization happens.
A dog can hold a beautiful place command in our living room by day four and blow straight through it at the front door of a hardware store on day eight. That is not a failure. It is how dogs learn: one environment at a time, with the skill becoming reliable only after it has worked in many. Our field trips exist for that reason, and they are scheduled in the later days once the foundation is solid.
For a jumping, pulling adolescent Lab from Towne Lake, an early pickup costs some polish. For a dog who lunges at other dogs on the Spring Creek Greenway, it can cost the whole point of the stay, because those controlled exposures are precisely the work that got cut. Our team will tell you which of the two your dog is when you call.
Reasons that make sense
Some early pickups are the right call, and we will say so.
A hurricane evacuation, a hospital stay in the family, a job relocation that moved up: these are reasons to bring him home, and our team plans around them. Between June 1 and November 30 we watch the Gulf forecast like everyone else in Houston, and if a system threatens the week, we call you before you call us.
Missing him is a reason too, and there is no shame in it. We suggest a middle path first: ask for an extra video, or come out to the Cypress home for a visit and a short lesson. Seeing the dog work in person tends to settle the worry, and many families then let the stay finish. If not, we bring him home and pick the follow-up lessons up from there.
Call or text our team and say what is going on.
Ask for a candid progress read: what is solid, what is half-built.
Choose a pickup day that allows at least a short go-home session.
Bring the whole family, so everyone learns the same handling.
Book the included follow-up lesson for the week after.
Keep the daily structure at home exactly as it was taught.
What it means for your dog
A shortened stay still leaves you with skills, a plan and the same support.
The go-home session happens no matter when the stay ends. Our trainer hands you the leash, walks you through place, the structured walk and door manners, and gives you the daily routine to keep. Gold includes one follow-up lesson and lifelong support; Platinum includes unlimited private lessons at our Cypress location, which becomes the mechanism for finishing what the stay started.
For puppies, a shortened stay matters least, since their programs are short and the household does most of the ongoing work anyway. For adult dogs with manners problems it costs a little. For dogs in behavior modification for reactivity or aggression, we will ask you to reconsider, gently, because the public repetitions in the final week are the difference between a dog who is better at home and a dog who is better everywhere.
- Puppies: little lost, the household carries the work
- Manners cases: some polish lost, lessons recover it
- Reactivity and aggression: the final week is the point

Ask our team how a shortened stay is handled, and expect a straight answer.
Every family's situation is different, so we do not publish a formula for early departures. What we do offer is a direct conversation: tell our team the circumstances and we will explain how the remaining days, the included lessons and the balance are handled in your case. A program cut short for a hurricane is not the same as one cut short on day three because you changed your mind, and we treat them differently.
The one thing that never changes is the support. Gold and Platinum graduates keep their lifelong support whether the stay ran full length or not, and a dog who came home early can still finish the work through lessons at $160 in Cypress or $220 in your home. Ask, and you will get a number, not a runaround.
The programs
Programs, and the lessons that finish them.
Each stay ends with a handover, and the included lessons are how a shortened program gets completed.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Will an early pickup undo the training my dog has done so far?
No. What he has learned stays learned, especially the foundation work from the first week. The risk is that skills never got tested outside our home, so they feel unreliable on your street. The go-home session and follow-up lessons are how you close that gap over the following weeks.
Can I visit instead of picking my dog up early?
Yes, and it is often the better option. Come out to the Cypress training home, watch a short session and handle him yourself with our trainer coaching. Seeing him work in person tends to settle the worry. Ask our team to schedule it, since visits are timed around the training day.
What if a hurricane is forecast during my dog's stay?
Our team tracks the forecast from June through November and calls families early when a storm threatens the week. Depending on the track, we either bring the dog home ahead of it or shelter in place with the dogs in our care. Either way you hear from us before conditions change.
Does an early pickup still include the go-home session?
Yes. Every program ends with one, whenever it ends. Give us enough notice to schedule a proper session rather than a rushed handoff, because the handover is where you learn to keep the results. For Platinum families the unlimited follow-up lessons carry the rest of the work.
Can I extend the stay instead if my dog needs more time?
Often, yes, subject to space in the home, since we keep the number of dogs small. If our trainers think a third week would turn a good result into a solid one, they will say so around the midpoint and you can decide. Extensions are priced with our team on the phone.
