Adult dogs, two to ten

Adult dog board and train in Houston: never too late, and here is what changes

The most common sentence our team hears about an adult dog is some version of he is five, is it worth it. Yes. A five-year-old learns a place command as fast as a one-year-old and holds it better. What he also has is a rehearsed set of habits, and that is what the stay undoes.

Who this is for

Who adult dog board and train is for: the dog who was managed, the rescue, the dog whose life changed.

The dog who was managed instead of trained. A six-year-old Lab in Cinco Ranch who has never walked on a loose leash, or a boxer who lives behind a baby gate because he jumps, is not a lost cause. He is a dog nobody ever asked. Adults like this often move through Gold quickly, because the skills are new but the temperament is settled.

The adult rescue, one to three months home. The shelter dog has decompressed, the honeymoon is over and the real dog has shown up: counter surfing, barking at the window, dragging toward every dog on the Spring Creek Greenway. Structure is what he is asking for. Gold gives it; Platinum adds the behavior work if the barking has turned into lunging.

The dog whose household changed. A new baby, a move from acreage in Tomball to a townhome in Midtown, a divorce, an owner who now works from home: the dog was fine and is not anymore. An adult stay resets the rules for the new life, and the go-home session is planned around the house he is coming back to, not the one he left.

Day by day

What changes in the stay itself when the dog is an adult.

Less teaching, more proofing. A puppy stay is mostly teaching new behaviors. An adult stay teaches the command in a day or two and then spends the rest of the time putting it up against the trigger that has been winning for years: the front door, the fence dog, the delivery driver. Adults also rest better between sessions, so the day has fewer, longer repetitions.

The first days are slower on purpose. An adult arriving at a new house with new dogs and a new handler needs a day or two to stop scanning before he can learn, and our trainers spend that time on crate, walks and food rather than commands. Updates come Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and the first video usually shows a calmer dog than the one you dropped off.

1

Days 1 to 2: decompression. Crate, structured walks, meals for a sit, and a read on the dog.

2

Days 3 to 6: sit/stay, place/stay, loose leash walking and door boundaries, taught fast because an adult learns fast.

3

Days 7 to 10: the old habits meet the new rules; jumping, counter surfing, pulling and bolting are each interrupted and replaced.

4

Days 11 to 14: duration and distraction on the neighborhood streets; a Gold dog goes home on day 14.

5

Days 15 to 20, Platinum: down/stay, the structured heel, behavior modification, and field trips to stores and parks along 290.

6

Day 21: the comprehensive handover and the first of the unlimited private lessons booked.

Houston specifics

An adult dog in Houston has years of heat, storms and sidewalks behind him, and the stay uses them.

Adult dogs arrive with Houston-specific history. A dog who has lived through three summers here has learned to refuse a midday walk, and a dog who rode out a hurricane in a garage may panic at wind. Our trainers plan around it: summer sessions run before 8am and after 7pm from May to September, and storm season, June 1 to November 30, comes with a plan for every dog in the house.

The neighborhood around the training home off US-290 supplies what an adult dog has rehearsed against: fence dogs, delivery vans, kids on bikes, fire ant mounds on the esplanade. Platinum field trips then go to the pet and hardware stores along 290 and Fry Road and to the lake, where a dog who has lunged at strangers for years learns to sit beside them. Heartworm prevention should be current year-round.

  • Central Houston to Cypress about 30 to 45 minutes outside rush hour; The Woodlands 35 to 45
  • Fireworks on July 4 and New Year's Eve: a bolter gets extra crate and place work
  • Vaccination records and heartworm status come with the dog at drop-off

Which program fits

Which program fits an adult, and when a shorter one is honestly enough.

Silver at $1,500 fits the adult who once had training and drifted, or the calm five-year-old who only pulls. One week of leash and door work is genuinely enough there, and our team will say so. Gold at $2,500 fits the adult with a full set of household habits and no aggression: pulling, jumping, no off switch, counter surfing.

Platinum at $3,750 fits the adult who reacts: lunging on the Buffalo Bayou trail, growling at guests, guarding a bowl. Years of rehearsal need three weeks of behavior modification and the unlimited lessons that follow. The six-week VIP at $10,000 fits the adult with an off-leash goal, and the Free-Style or Agility stays at $2,500 suit an adult who already has obedience and needs a job.

  • Silver: the refresher, $1,500
  • Gold: the untrained adult, $2,500
  • Platinum: the adult who reacts, $3,750

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Is a five-year-old dog too old for board and train?

No. Adult dogs learn commands quickly because they can focus longer than a puppy, and they hold what they learn. The difference is that an adult brings rehearsed habits, so the stay spends its time replacing those rather than teaching from zero.

How long does board and train take for an adult dog?

Two weeks in Gold for household habits, three weeks in Platinum when reactivity or aggression is involved, one week in Silver for a refresher. An adult does not need longer than a young dog; he often needs less, because the temperament is settled.

Will an adult dog bond with your trainers instead of me?

He will bond with the people who feed and train him for two weeks, and that fades within days of coming home. What stays is the training, because the go-home session puts the commands in your hands and the follow-up lesson checks them.

My adult rescue has an unknown history. Can he still do a stay?

Yes, and the first two days are used to learn that history from the dog himself: how he reacts to other dogs, the door and a hand near the bowl. Tell our team everything you have seen on the free consultation. If there has been a bite, the plan is Platinum with a management plan, agreed before any deposit.

How much does adult dog board and train cost in Houston?

$2,500 for the two-week Gold, $3,750 for the three-week Platinum, $1,500 for the one-week Silver and $10,000 for the six-week VIP, the same at any age. The $250 reservation deposit comes off the program total, and door-to-door transportation is $250 with the first lesson at your home included.
