Sheepadoodle training in Houston: a big herding doodle with a nipping habit

A sheepadoodle looks like a stuffed animal and is built like a working dog, and the families who call us have usually just watched it herd a birthday party. This page covers where the nipping comes from, how our Cypress stay gives the drive a job, and what each program costs.

The breed

What a sheepadoodle is like to train: a herding dog's instincts at a large dog's weight.

The Old English sheepdog was bred to drive cattle and sheep, and the standard poodle was bred to retrieve from water, so a sheepadoodle is two working breeds in one large, curly-coated body. The AKC describes both parents as smart, and the cross inherits it. It is a sweet, goofy dog that also needs a job, and when the job is not provided it makes one out of the children, the other dog or the joggers at the park.

Between eight and eighteen months the drive arrives before the manners. The puppy that mouthed hands now nips heels when the kids run, and it is big enough now for that to bruise. On leash it drags, at the door it jumps at chest height, and off leash it chases anything that moves and does not come back. The nipping is the call we take most, and it is herding instinct with no outlet, not aggression.

The stay

How a sheepadoodle's stay works: the drive gets a job before the nipping gets a correction.

A sheepadoodle's stay in our Cypress home starts the way every working dog's does: earned meals, door waits, crate calm and a place bed with duration, so the dog experiences somebody else controlling movement. That matters with a herding dog, because controlling movement is the whole instinct. Then the drive gets an outlet: a structured heel, retrieve and place work with real focus, and long-line recall built with the chase drive instead of against it.

Nipping is addressed by teaching the dog what to do when children run, which is hold a place bed or a down, and by the kids learning a routine at the go-home session. Updates with photos and video reach you Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and every adult and child in the family runs the commands at the handover.

1

Earned meals, door waits, crate calm and place with duration, so the dog hands over control of movement.

2

A structured heel with the leash slack, first on quiet Cypress streets and then past joggers and bikes.

3

Place and down held while people run, play and open doors around the dog.

4

Long-line recall built with the chase drive, paid every time, at Towne Lake and Josey Lake.

5

Retrieve and focus work as the daily outlet the herding drive needs.

6

Field trips to the pet and hardware stores on Fry Road for calm at full size among strangers.

7

The go-home session, where the children learn their routine and every adult runs the commands.

Houston

Houston specifics for a sheepadoodle: a heavy coat, a big yard, and joggers on every trail.

A sheepadoodle's coat is thick and curly and it holds heat like a blanket. From May through September our outdoor sessions with the breed happen before eight in the morning and after seven at night, the pavement is tested first and a full groom before drop-off is close to required. The AVMA's heat guidance for thick-coated dogs is our stopping rule. The middle of the day is spent in store aisles and on place work indoors.

Sheepadoodles live in the big-yard suburbs and on acreage: Bridgeland, Fairfield, Creekside Park, the Tomball and Magnolia lots, where kids run in the yard and joggers and cyclists pass on the trails. HOA leash rules on the community trails mean the dragging has to end before the dog is welcome there. Fire ants are checked before yard sessions, mosquitoes are year-round, and fireworks on July 4 and storm season from June 1 to November 30 push some sheepadoodles into pacing and door-scratching, so the crate is a refuge early.

  • Heavy coat: groom first, early and late from May through September, forced water
  • Kids, joggers and cyclists are all herding triggers
  • HOA leash rules on the community trails
  • A calm crate before fireworks and storm season

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How much does sheepadoodle training cost in Houston?

At Best Dog University most sheepadoodles take the three-week Platinum Board & Train at $3,750, which covers the nipping and the drive. A young sheepadoodle with manners problems only fits the two-week Gold at $2,500. Off-leash reliability is the six-week VIP at $10,000. The puppy bundle for a dog under four months is $550 or $750.

Is my sheepadoodle's nipping aggression?

Almost never. Herding breeds control movement with their mouths, and a sheepadoodle nipping the heels of a running child is doing what the sheepdog half was bred to do. It still has to stop, because the dog is large. The stay gives the drive an outlet, teaches a place command that holds while kids run, and shows the children their part.

Can a sheepadoodle be trained to be reliable off leash?

Yes, in the six-week VIP program, which builds off-leash reliability with the Mini-Educator included and is the honest route for a dog with this much chase drive on acreage. Gold and Platinum build recall on a long line with food, which holds in a yard and a park but is not the same as off leash near a road.

How do you keep a dog with this much coat safe in a Houston summer?

A full groom before the stay, outdoor sessions only in the early morning and evening from May through September, the pavement tested before every walk, forced water breaks and a hard stop at heavy panting. Most summer training for a sheepadoodle happens indoors, in stores and at the training home, where the manners work is anyway.

Will the training hold with our kids?

It holds if the children have a routine, and the go-home session is where they learn it: no running past the dog without a place command, no tug with hands, and how to send the dog to its bed. Platinum's unlimited private lessons exist for exactly this.
