Service dog training in Houston: what we do, and what we do not
The phrase gets searched for two different reasons. Some people need a dog trained to perform tasks for a disability. Others want a companion with the obedience and public manners a service dog has. This page is honest about which one Best Dog University provides, so nobody spends $10,000 on the wrong thing.

What we do
Service-dog-level obedience: the reliability and public manners, built over six weeks.
The VIP program is a six-week stay in our Cypress training home where the dog masters advanced leash manners, a structured heel, sit and place with duration and distraction, front and center positioning, door boundaries, impulse control and complete off-leash reliability. Every detail is built to produce a calm, focused dog that performs with clarity in real public places.
The Mini-Educator e-collar is included and introduced properly for clear communication on and off leash. At the end the dog is transported home, our team runs an in-depth in-home handover, and you have unlimited in-home lessons and lifetime support directly with our trainers. That is service-dog-level reliability, and it is what most people searching this phrase actually want.
- Six weeks in our trainer's home, $10,000
- Off-leash reliability and public manners
- Mini-Educator included and taught
- Transport home, in-home handover, unlimited in-home lessons

What we do not do
No task training, no certification, no paperwork: those are a different service, and we say so.
A service dog in the legal sense is trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability. That training, and the public access and legal side of it, is the work of service dog organizations and specialist task trainers. Best Dog University does not train tasks, does not issue certificates, vests or registrations, and does not provide letters for housing or travel.
If your need is medical, start with a service dog organization or your physician, and treat any trainer who offers certification for a fee with caution. If your goal is a dog with service-level manners and reliability, whether as a companion or as a foundation before task training elsewhere, the VIP program is built for exactly that.
Why the level matters
The gap between a well-trained pet and service-level reliability is proofing, and Houston has plenty to proof against.
A well-trained pet sits and comes most of the time. A service-level dog holds a down under a restaurant table for an hour, walks a heel through a crowded store, ignores a dropped plate, and comes off leash across a field the first time. Getting there takes weeks of repetition in real environments, not a checklist.
The VIP dog trains in stores along 290 and Fry Road, on Cypress sidewalks, at the lake, in parking lots and at real doors, early and late in summer, with every distraction Houston offers: carts, kids, dogs, wildlife, thunder. By the handover the reliability has been tested where it will be used.
Structure and obedience foundations in the home.
Duration and distraction on every command.
Structured heel, front and center positioning, door boundaries.
Long-line recall in fields and at the lake.
Mini-Educator introduced at low levels for communication at distance.
Off-leash reliability proofed in public, then transferred to you at home.
Who it fits
Owners who want a finished dog, high-drive breeds with a job to do, and foundations before task work.
The VIP program suits three kinds of families: those who simply want the most reliable dog possible for acreage, travel and public life; owners of working breeds, Malinois, shepherds, Dobermans, that need a real job and a real standard; and people planning task training elsewhere who want the obedience foundation done first, which most task programs require.
Our founder's background training Quarter Horses on a farm shows most in this program. High-drive animals respond to calm, consistent, well-timed handling, and that is the standard the VIP dog is held to.
- A finished, off-leash reliable companion
- Working breeds that need a standard
- Foundation before task training elsewhere

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Does Best Dog University certify service dogs?
No. There is no official service dog certification in the United States, and Best Dog University does not issue certificates, registrations or vests. The VIP program trains service-dog-level obedience and reliability; task training for a disability is a separate service from specialist organizations.
Can you train my dog to be a service dog for my medical condition?
Task training for a disability is not something Best Dog University provides. Start with a service dog organization or your physician. If a program requires a solid obedience foundation first, the VIP program can provide that foundation, and our team will say plainly whether that path makes sense for your dog.
How much is service-dog-level training in Houston?
The six-week VIP Service-Dog-Level Board & Train is $10,000, including the Mini-Educator e-collar, transport home, an in-home handover session and unlimited in-home lessons with lifetime support directly with our trainers.
Is VIP only for working breeds?
No. Working breeds thrive in it, but any dog with the temperament for a high standard can reach service-level reliability. Our team assesses the dog on the free call and in person before recommending it.
What is the difference between VIP and Platinum?
Platinum is three weeks and produces reliable obedience with field trips and behavior modification. VIP is six weeks and produces complete off-leash reliability with the e-collar included, transport home, an in-home handover and unlimited in-home lessons. Our team recommends VIP when the goal is a fully finished dog.
