Puppy training cost

Puppy training cost in Houston: bundle, lessons and board and train compared

Puppy training is the purchase most Houston families make first and understand least, because the right answer changes with the puppy's age. This page compares our three options by age, price and what you get, and says when the cheapest one is exactly enough.

Side by side

Three ways to train a puppy, priced side by side by age.

The Puppy Development Bundle is built for the first window, under four months. Four private sessions with our trainer, in Cypress or in your home, teach you sit, place, stay, recall, crate and potty routines, calm socialization and how to stop nipping and jumping before they become habits. The puppy is too young for a stay, and the problems are house problems, so the bundle happens where the puppy lives.

Private lessons are the flexible option: one question, one session, at $160 or $220. Board and train is the deep option once the puppy is old enough. Gold at $2,500 builds sit/stay, place/stay, loose leash and door boundaries in two weeks and includes a follow-up lesson. Silver at $1,500 is a lighter one-week foundation for a steady older puppy. Puppy classes are not something we offer, and elsewhere in Houston they are usually the cheapest option on the market.

When the bundle wins

The bundle wins for every puppy under four months, and it is the cheapest correct answer.

At eight to sixteen weeks a puppy is learning where to pee, where to sleep, what teeth are for and whether the front door is a starting gate. Those lessons happen in your house, at your pace, and the bundle is built around exactly that. Four sessions of 45 to 60 minutes match a puppy's attention span, and the gap between sessions is where you practice. At $550, it is the least expensive thing on this page that fully fits the job.

It also wins for socialization, which in Houston has a wrinkle: a young puppy cannot walk hot pavement from May to September and should stay off the ground in busy dog areas until your vet says the vaccination series allows it. Our trainer shows you how to socialize with calm exposure, car rides, a quiet Katy park bench, a hardware store cart, so the puppy meets the world without meeting the pavement.

  • Puppy is under four months old
  • Potty, crate, nipping and jumping are the concerns
  • You can practice for a few minutes several times a day
  • You want to learn to raise the puppy yourself
  • The budget is $550, not $2,500

When a lesson or a stay wins

A lesson wins for one question; a stay wins once the puppy is older and the habits are real.

A single lesson at $160 is the right buy when a family has done the bundle, or trained the puppy themselves, and has one thing stuck: a puppy who will not settle in the crate, a recall that works in the kitchen and nowhere else. One hour, one plan, done. It is also the honest starting point for a family who is not sure what they need, because our trainer will see the puppy and say so.

A stay wins at five to eight months, when the puppy is 40 pounds, mouthing the kids, dragging everyone down the sidewalk in Bridgeland and ignoring his name outside. That is repair, and repair takes daily repetition. Gold at $2,500 does the work in two weeks and hands it back with a go-home session and a follow-up lesson. If the puppy has started barking or lunging at other dogs, Platinum at $3,750 handles early reactivity before it hardens.

  • One specific problem after the bundle: a $160 lesson
  • Puppy past four months with pulling, jumping or mouthing: Gold
  • Recall fails outside and practice has stopped: Gold
  • Barking or lunging at dogs or strangers: Platinum
  • Not sure the puppy has the stamina for a stay: ask our team

What Houston families choose

Houston families spend the least when they buy in age order: bundle, then a lesson, then a stay if needed.

The families who spend the least overall book the bundle in the first weeks, use a single lesson or two if something sticks, and only book a stay if adolescence brings habits the lessons cannot hold. Families who skip the bundle and wait for the problems usually end up at Gold, because by six months the habits have had months of practice. Both paths are fine. The first one costs less.

Location moves the price too. The bundle is $550 in Cypress and $750 in your home; families in Cypress, Tomball and Katy, all within about 35 minutes, usually come to us, while families in the Heights or Sugar Land often pay for the in-home version to save four drives. In summer the in-home bundle has a second advantage: the sessions happen in your air-conditioned house, where a young puppy should be anyway through the heat of the day.

How to decide

Price your puppy's training in five steps.

Age first, then habits, then your time. The number follows, and for most families it is the first one on the list.

1

Under four months: book the bundle, $550 in Cypress or $750 at home. Stop here unless something specific is stuck.

2

One stuck problem at any age: book a single lesson at $160 or $220 and practice the plan.

3

Past four months with pulling, jumping, mouthing or a failed recall: budget $2,500 for Gold.

4

Any sign of barking or lunging at dogs or people: budget $3,750 for Platinum and call soon; early reactivity changes fastest.

5

Add $250 for transportation if the drive to Cypress does not work, and remember it includes a lesson in your home.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How much does puppy training cost in Houston overall?

At Best Dog University, $550 to $750 for the four-session Puppy Development Bundle, $160 to $220 for a single private lesson, and $1,500 to $3,750 for a board and train once the puppy is past four months. Elsewhere in Houston, group puppy classes are usually the cheapest option on the market, and private trainers commonly charge $100 to $250 an hour at the time of writing.

Is the bundle cheaper than four separate lessons?

Yes. Four single lessons at the training home would cost more than the $550 bundle, and four in-home lessons more than the $750 version, and the bundle sessions are planned as a sequence for a puppy under four months. If your puppy is older than that, single lessons or a stay are the right shape instead.

Can a puppy do board and train before four months?

Our team keeps puppies under four months in the bundle, because potty, crate and calm are house skills and a very young puppy does not have the stamina for a full training day. Past four months, a stay becomes an option and our team judges each puppy individually on the free phone consultation.

Does puppy training cost more in summer?

No. Prices are the same year-round. What changes is where the work happens: from May to September a young puppy cannot walk hot pavement, so bundle sessions and stays lean on indoor work, early mornings and shaded spots. The in-home bundle at $750 is popular in summer for that reason.
