March

Spring break travel with a dog from Houston.

Beach, hill country or the in-laws: what a spring break trip asks of a dog, what to pack, and the two commands that make a hotel room easy.

Spring break from Houston usually means Galveston, the hill country or a long drive to family. A dog on that trip needs two things it may not have: a car routine and a settle in a strange room. Both are a two-week build.

Before you go

  • Car: crated, short drives first, then a long one, with a stop every two hours
  • Place in a new room: practice at a friend's house before the hotel
  • Recall on a long line before any beach, because the Gulf is a strong temptation
  • Records, food, medications and a leash for every person in the car

On the trip

Walk the dog before check-in, set up the place bed and the crate before you unpack anything else, and run ten minutes of place in the room with the door open. A dog that knows the routine settles; a dog that arrives to chaos matches it. Galveston's beaches have leash rules that change by stretch of sand, so read the signs and keep the long line handy.

If the trip is not dog-friendly, graduates can board in the training home and come home sharper. Either way, decide in February; the March calendar fills.

Three destinations, three different dogs

Galveston asks for water manners and a recall that beats a flock of gulls; the beach stretches west of the seawall allow dogs on leash and the island's rules change by section, so read the signs. The hill country asks for trail manners, heat awareness on the limestone by afternoon, and neutrality to the deer that walk through every campsite at dusk. The in-laws' house asks for the hardest thing of all: calm in a home with other people's rules, other people's dogs and children who do not know yours. Practice the specific skill for the specific trip in the two weeks before, not the general idea of good behavior.

  • Beach: long line, recall away from birds, fresh water and shade every thirty minutes
  • Trails: leash on, paws checked for cactus and burrs, walk early
  • Family house: place bed in the guest room, meals in the crate, no free roaming on day one

The hotel room

A dog in a hotel room barks at the hallway, and every door that closes is a stranger at yours. Set the crate against the wall farthest from the door, run a fan for white noise, and give the dog ten minutes of place with the door open before you go out for dinner. Do not leave a dog that has never been alone in a strange room alone in a strange room; that is how a hotel calls to complain and how a dog learns that travel means panic. If the dog is not ready, this year it stays home with a graduate boarding stay, and next year it comes.
