September

Fall is training season: the cool-weather window opens.

Why September to November is the best stretch of the Houston year to train a dog, and how to use it before the holidays arrive.

A dog walking on a loose leash beside its owner on a park path in cooler weather

The first morning in September that reads 68 degrees at six is the start of the Houston training year. From now until Thanksgiving the pavement is safe all day, the trails are usable after lunch, and a dog can work for an hour without a heat check. Every program we run gets easier in this window, and so does the homework you do afterwards.

What to do with the window

Take the structured walk outside again. Through the summer most of our leash work happened at dawn and in store aisles. Now the walk can be long, and long walks are where a loose leash gets proofed against joggers, bikes and other dogs. Aim for twenty minutes of heel before you let the dog sniff, then alternate.

  • Move training back outdoors between ten and four
  • Add one new environment a week: a trail, a patio, a hardware store
  • Practice place on the porch while the neighborhood goes by
  • Book holiday help now; the December calendar fills in October

Why the holidays are the deadline

Guests, doorbells, a table full of food and a house full of children arrive in late November. A dog that learns place and door manners in October holds them through the holidays. One that starts in December is learning during the hardest weeks of the year. If your dog needs a program, the cool window is the time to book it; a Platinum stay booked in September finishes before the first guest rings the bell.

A week-by-week plan for the window

Weeks one and two are for the walk: heel on your street, then heel past the neighbor's dog behind the fence, then heel on a trail at the quiet hour. Weeks three and four move place outdoors: the porch, then a patio, then a bench at Towne Lake with the boardwalk traffic going by. Weeks five to eight are recall on a long line in an open field, then at the lake, with the leash never coming off until the dog has come back through a hundred distractions. That is roughly the order the dogs in the training home follow in a Platinum stay, compressed into three weeks because the environment does not change and the practice is daily.

Keep sessions short. Fifteen minutes of good work beats an hour of drifting, and a dog that ends every session succeeding wants the next one. Write down what worked; by November you will have a list of the environments your dog can hold, and the holidays will tell you which ones still need work.

What the cool season cannot fix on its own

Good weather does not cure reactivity, separation anxiety or guarding. It makes the practice possible, but the plan has to be right. If your dog lunges at other dogs, more trail walks in October are more rehearsals of the lunge. If the dog panics when you leave, longer walks do not touch it. Those are the cases that fill the training home every fall, and the free phone consultation is where our team tells you whether your dog needs the window or a program inside it.
