How to teach a dog off the furniture

The couch is not a moral question and our trainers do not care whether your dog sleeps on it; we care whether the rule is the same for everyone in the house. Here is how to teach off, how to make the rule stick, and the growl that means the couch has become a bigger problem.

A family relaxing on the sofa with their dog at home, the couch rule every household has to decide

Why it fails

The rule changes by the person, and the dog has learned who lets it.

Dogs get on furniture because it is comfortable, because it smells of the family and because it has worked; the mother says no and the teenager pats the cushion, and the dog learns to get up when the teenager is home. A rule that changes by person or by day is not a rule, and a dog living under one keeps testing, which is fair. The households that succeed decide one rule, on or off or on by invitation only, and everyone keeps it. The dog also needs somewhere better to be: a dog told off with nowhere to go returns in five minutes, and a dog with a place bed beside the couch, where it gets paid and gets a chew, chooses the bed.

  • A rule that changes by person is not a rule
  • On, off, or on by invitation; the household decides
  • A dog with nowhere better to be comes back
  • A place bed beside the couch, with pay and a chew

The method

Six steps from the household decision to a dog that chooses the bed.

Decide the rule first, write it down and put it on the fridge. Then set up the room so the dog cannot rehearse while it learns: a leash on the dog in the house for a week, the living room closed when nobody is in it, and a chair or a box on the couch when it is unattended.

1

Put a place bed beside the couch and pay the dog on it, a lot, for a week: meals, chews, treats for lying there while the family watches television

2

Teach off: when the dog is on the couch, lure it to the floor with food, mark the instant all four feet land, and pay on the floor; ten repetitions, then the word off before the lure, then the word alone

3

Never pay the dog for getting off by letting it back up; off ends on the floor or on the bed

4

Manage the rehearsals: the leash in the house for the first week so the dog can be walked off calmly, the room closed when empty, the couch blocked when nobody is watching

5

If the rule is on by invitation, teach a word that means up, and make the dog wait on the floor until it hears it; no word, no couch

6

Hold the rule for a month with everyone in the house, then relax the management; the dog that chooses its bed has learned

The mistakes

Sometimes, shouting, dragging by the collar, and the guest who says it is fine.

Sometimes is the mistake that makes the couch a negotiation: a dog allowed up on Sunday and shouted off on Monday learns to gamble. Shouting teaches the dog to wait until you leave the room. Dragging a dog off by the collar teaches it to stiffen when a hand approaches, which is the beginning of guarding. And the guest who says the dog is fine on the couch undoes a month in an evening; the rule is announced at the door. A dog that is allowed on the couch by invitation has a fine life, and a dog that is never allowed has a fine life, and a dog that does not know which it is has a stressful one.

Comfort matters. A dog kept off the couch in a house with hard floors needs a bed as good as the couch, or it will keep choosing the couch.

  • No sometimes
  • No shouting; the dog waits until you leave
  • No dragging; that is how guarding starts
  • The rule announced to every guest
  • A bed as comfortable as the couch

Proofing around Houston

Big houses, a lot of couches, and a dog that wants the cool leather in July.

Houston houses have a couch in every room and a dog that has learned the living room rule has not learned the game room's or the guest room's; the rule is taught in each. Summer adds a motive: leather and tile are cool and a dog in July wants the coolest surface in the house, which is why the place bed for a Houston dog is a raised cot with air under it or a cooling mat, placed where the air conditioning reaches. The holiday season is the test, with guests on every couch and a dog that has been told the rule is off for the week; the holiday guests guide on this site covers it. Our trainers set up the couch rule at the go-home session in your own living room, with the bed where it will live.

  • A rule per room
  • A raised cot or a cooling mat as the alternative in summer
  • The holidays as the test
  • The bed set up at the go-home session

When to call

A growl when moved, a dog that guards the couch or a person on it, or a house that cannot agree.

A dog that growls, stiffens or snaps when moved off the couch has started guarding it, and the couch is now a resource guarding case: the couch goes off limits entirely for now, the dog is called off with a treat rather than moved, and the method on the resource guarding page applies; a dog that has snapped is a Platinum case at $3,750 with an consultation first. A dog that guards a person on the couch, growling at the partner who sits down, is the same case and more urgent. For the ordinary version, a Gold stay at $2,500 builds place and off into the foundation, and an in-home lesson at $220 gets the household to agree on a rule and sets up the bed in an afternoon, which is often the whole problem.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Is it bad to let my dog on the couch?

No, if the rule is the same every day and for every person, and if the dog gets off when asked without a fuss. On by invitation is a fine rule and so is never. The problem is a dog that does not know which, because the rule changes by person.

How do I get my dog off the couch without a fight?

Lure it to the floor with food, mark the instant all four feet land, and pay on the floor, then put the word off before the lure and fade the food. Never drag by the collar; that is how guarding starts. A leash in the house for the first week lets you walk the dog off calmly.

My dog growls when I move it off the couch. What now?

The couch has become something the dog guards, and the plan changes: the couch off limits for now, a place bed beside it, the dog called off with a treat rather than moved, and the resource guarding method. A dog that has snapped needs an consultation before anything else.

Why does my dog get on the couch only when I am out?

Because it has been shouted off while you are home and has learned that the rule applies to your presence. Block the couch when the room is empty for a month, pay the dog on its bed while you are home, and teach off with food rather than a voice.
