Licking, sorted by cause

How to stop a dog from licking everything: boredom, anxiety or habit

Licking hands, faces, couches, floors and paws are different problems that look alike. The dog that licks your ankles while you cook is not the same case as the dog that licks the tile at 2 a.m., and neither is the same as the dog chewing its feet after a summer walk.

Before you start

Before you start: a vet check, a log and a lick mat.

See your vet first, especially if the licking is new, focused on the paws or one spot, aimed at floors and walls, or comes with scratching, redness or a change in appetite. Skin, stomach, dental and pain problems can all show up as licking, and no training plan fixes those. Hot, wet summers keep paws damp, and fire ant stings on the feet are common in Houston yards, so paw licking after a walk is often a question for the vet rather than the trainer.

Once the vet has ruled out a medical cause, keep a simple log for a week: the time, what the dog licked, who was there and what had just happened. Patterns show quickly. Licking in the late afternoon on days without a walk points to boredom; licking when you pick up your keys or during thunder points to anxiety; licking of one person on the couch every evening points to habit. Buy a rubber lick mat for the outlet.

  • A vet check before any training
  • Paws, floors or one spot: vet first
  • A one-week log of time, target and trigger
  • A lick mat as the approved outlet

The steps

Seven steps, matched to the cause the log shows.

Most dogs are a mix, so start with the steps that fit the strongest pattern in your log and add the others as needed. Whatever the cause, the dog is never punished for licking, because a worried dog that is scolded often licks more, not less. Give the plan three weeks before you judge it, and keep the log going so you can see the change on paper.

1

Get the vet check done and follow any treatment first; training starts once the body is comfortable

2

Boredom: add a dawn walk or indoor circuit, two short training sessions and a meal from a puzzle, so the dog has real work each day

3

Give a lick mat spread with a little wet food or plain yogurt at the time of day the licking usually peaks, on the dog's bed

4

Licking people: when the tongue comes out, stand up or pull your hand away calmly, wait a second, ask for a sit and pay the sit

5

Anxiety: set a predictable daily routine, teach a settle on place with a chew, and lower the triggers the log found, such as departure cues

6

Habit licking of furniture or floors: interrupt with one calm cue, lead the dog to its bed, and pay it for lying down there

7

Pay stillness: several times a day, drop a treat between the dog's paws when it is lying quietly without licking

Troubleshooting

When it is not working: the cause was missed, the attention still flows, or the anxiety is bigger than it looks.

If the licking has not eased in three weeks, the usual reasons are these. A medical cause was missed or has come back, so the dog is still itchy or uncomfortable; go back to the vet with your log. The licking still gets attention, a laugh, a push, a 'stop it' that becomes a conversation, and attention of any kind keeps it going. Or the anxiety behind it is bigger than it looked, and a lick mat is soothing a dog that needs more help.

Signs that anxiety is the real problem include pacing, panting when it is not hot, licking that gets worse when you leave, and licking so intense that the dog wears the fur or skin raw. Storm season and the fireworks on July 4 and New Year can set off a wave of it. That dog needs a plan for the anxiety itself, and the licking usually fades as the anxiety does.

  • Still itchy: back to the vet
  • Any attention keeps licking alive
  • Raw skin or pacing points to anxiety
  • Storms and fireworks can spike it

When to get help

When to get help: raw skin, a dog that cannot settle, or licking tied to being left alone.

Licking that comes with anxiety, pacing or distress when you leave is a behavior case. The three-week Platinum Board & Train at $3,750 covers behavior modification for anxiety, with a structured routine, place with duration and unlimited private lessons afterward. For a dog whose licking is mostly boredom or habit, a private lesson at $160 in Cypress or $220 in your home sets up the outlets and the routine, and the anxiety page on this site explains how our team approaches the bigger cases.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Why does my dog lick everything?

Common reasons are boredom, anxiety, habit and a medical cause such as itchy skin, stomach upset or mouth pain. Some dogs lick people to ask for attention and have learned that it works. A vet check and a week of notes on when and what the dog licks usually show which one you are dealing with.

Is it bad if my dog licks my face?

For many families a lick is fine and part of a greeting. It becomes a problem when it is constant, directed at guests or children who dislike it, or tied to a dog that cannot settle. If you want it to stop, stand up or turn away calmly when it starts and reward a sit instead.

Why does my dog lick the floor or the couch?

Floor and furniture licking can be habit or anxiety, but it can also point to a stomach or other medical problem, especially when it is sudden, intense or at night. See your vet first. If the dog is healthy, redirect it to a lick mat on its bed and reward calm lying down.

Do lick mats encourage licking?

They give licking a place and a time, which is different from encouraging it everywhere. A dog that gets a lick mat on its bed in the late afternoon has an approved outlet for the urge, and licking itself can be calming. Use the mat on the bed and put it away afterward.

Should I use a bitter spray on furniture?

A bitter spray can help protect one spot while you train, but it does not change why the dog licks. Test it on a hidden area first, since some sprays mark fabric. Use it alongside the routine, the outlet and the vet check, not instead of them.
