Anxiety and fear

How to help a velcro dog be more independent

The dog that follows you to the bathroom is charming until it is a dog that panics when you leave for work, and the two are the same dog a year apart. Our trainers teach independence as a skill, while the family is home, and here is how.

Why it happens

Following has been paid, and the dog has never had a reason to be anywhere else.

A dog follows its person from room to room because it has always been allowed to and because it has always paid: a glance, a word, a pat, a door held open, a lap. Some breeds lean into it, the Vizslas, Weimaraners, doodles, shepherds and the small companion breeds, and a lot of Houston dogs acquired since 2020 have never been more than a room away from a person. None of that is anxiety yet. It becomes anxiety when the person leaves and the dog, which has no practice being alone and no place of its own, discovers that it cannot cope. Independence is taught the same way as sit: a spot of the dog's own, time there paid for, attention on a schedule, and a door that closes sometimes for no reason at all.

  • Following has always paid
  • Some breeds lean; some dogs were never alone
  • Not anxiety yet
  • Taught like sit: a spot, paid time, attention on a schedule

The method

Six steps, all of them while you are home.

The place bed is the center of it, because a dog with a spot of its own has somewhere to be that is not your feet. The first week is short and the goal is an hour on the bed in another room while you work, within a month.

1

Place with duration on a bed in the room where you spend your day, paid for staying, grown to an hour with a chew over a couple of weeks

2

The bed moved to the next room, with a gate or the door ajar, for five minutes, then twenty, then an hour, paid on the bed at intervals

3

Attention on your schedule: the dog ignored when it follows and nudges, and called to you for a real greeting a dozen times a day when it is settled elsewhere

4

A closed door sometimes, for no reason, for a minute, then ten, with a chew on the other side of it

5

A job every day that is not you: a search for kibble through the house, a puzzle, a chew in the crate, a training session with a clear end

6

A structured walk and a routine the dog can predict, so the day has a shape and the dog knows when the attention comes

The mistakes

Paying the following, the bathroom escort, the lap as the default, and skipping it because the dog is fine.

Paying the following, a word or a glance every time the dog arrives at your feet, keeps the dog at your feet. The bathroom escort, the door left open because the dog whines, teaches the dog that whining at a door opens it, which is the first step toward a dog that panics at a closed one. The lap as the default, a dog that is on a person whenever a person is sitting, leaves the dog with no idea where else to be. And skipping the whole thing because the dog is fine, because a family that works from home never needs to leave it, produces the dog that falls apart the first week the office reopens. A velcro dog that is given a spot, a job and a door that closes sometimes stays a companion; one that is not becomes a patient.

A dog that already panics at a closed door, whining, scratching, drooling, has crossed into separation anxiety, and that page takes over from this one.

  • Stop paying the following
  • Close the bathroom door
  • A bed as the default, not the lap
  • Do it before you need it
  • Panic at a closed door: the separation page

Proofing around Houston

Work-from-home households, long summers indoors, and a lot of doodles and pointers.

Houston has a lot of households that have worked from home since 2020 and a lot of dogs that have never been alone, and the breeds Houston buys, doodles, Vizslas, Weimaraners and shepherds, are the ones that lean hardest; the velcro dog is the most common dog our trainers meet in a work-from-home house. Summer makes it worse, because the dog is indoors all day with its person and the walk is short, so the place bed in the next room and the daily job matter more from May through September. The work-from-home guide on this site covers the routine in detail, and our trainers set up the place bed and the schedule at the go-home session.

  • Work-from-home dogs that were never alone
  • Doodles, pointers and shepherds lean hardest
  • Summer puts the dog indoors with you all day
  • The bed and the schedule set up at the go-home session

When to call

A dog that panics at a closed door, a dog that guards its person, or a family going back to the office.

A dog that whines, scratches, drools or destroys at a closed door has crossed into separation anxiety, and the separation page and a Platinum stay at $3,750 with the weekday plan set up afterwards are the route. A dog that guards its person, growling at the partner who sits down beside them, is a resource guarding case and more urgent. A family going back to the office in a month with a dog that has never been alone needs the plan now and a midday walker for the first weeks. For the ordinary velcro dog, a Gold stay at $2,500 builds place with real duration and the structure that gives the dog somewhere else to be, and an in-home lesson at $220 sets up the bed, the schedule and the closed door in an afternoon.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Is it bad that my dog follows me everywhere?

Not yet, and it will be if nothing changes. A velcro dog has never had a reason to be anywhere else and has no practice being alone, and the day the family leaves it discovers it cannot cope. Teach independence now, while you are home: a bed of its own, paid time there, attention on your schedule, a door that closes sometimes.

How do I stop my dog following me from room to room?

Give it somewhere else to be: a place bed with duration, paid, first in your room and then in the next one. Stop paying the following with glances and words, and call the dog to you for real greetings when it is settled elsewhere. Close a door sometimes for no reason, with a chew on the other side.

Why does my dog cry when I close the bathroom door?

Because the door has always opened when it whined, and a dog that has never been on the other side of a door has no practice with one. Close it, ignore the whine, open it on a pause, and practice short closed doors with a chew until they are boring. Panic at a closed door, drooling and scratching, is the separation anxiety plan.

Which breeds are the most clingy?

The pointers, Vizslas and Weimaraners, the doodles, the shepherds and the small companion breeds lean hardest, and any dog that has never been alone leans too. Breed sets the tendency; the routine decides whether it becomes a problem.
