Why does my dog

What is a place command?

When families ask what their dog learned in two weeks, place is the answer that changes their house, and it is the one skill that runs through every other page on this site. Here is what it is, how we teach it and why it does so much.

A goldendoodle relaxing on a raised place bed, the command that gives a dog an off switch

The short version

Go to the bed, stay on the bed, until I say otherwise.

Place is a boundary, not a posture: the dog can sit, lie down, roll over or chew a bone, as long as all four feet stay on the bed until the release word. That is what makes it different from a stay, which asks the dog to hold a position and breaks down after a minute, and from a crate, which the dog cannot leave. A dog on place is in the room, can see the family, and is making a choice to stay, which is why the skill builds calm rather than frustration. The raised bed matters at first because it gives the dog a clear edge to understand; later a towel in a restaurant does the job.

  • A boundary, not a posture
  • Any position, four feet on the bed
  • Released with a word, never by the dog
  • In the room, not in a crate
  • A clear edge at first, a towel later

The reasoning

Why one skill fixes so many problems.

Most of the behavior families call about happens because the dog has nothing better to do at the moment it matters: the bell rings and the dog has no job, so it jumps; the mail carrier walks past and the dog has no job, so it barks; dinner is served and the dog has no job, so it begs. No is not a job, and a dog with no job finds one. Place gives it a job and a location, and a dog that is doing something cannot do the other thing. The duration is what builds the calm: a dog that can hold a bed for an hour while the house does ordinary things has learned to settle, and that settle follows it to the patio, the vet and the in-laws' house.

It is also the skill that makes a dog welcome. A dog that can be sent to a bed when guests arrive and released when they are settled is a dog that gets invited places.

  • Most problems happen when the dog has no job
  • No gives the dog nothing to do
  • Place gives it a job and a location
  • Duration builds the settle
  • A dog with a place command gets invited places

What it means for your dog

Puppies, adolescents, anxious dogs and the dog that guards the couch.

A puppy learns the bed in a day with food and learns the duration over weeks, and place is the skill that makes a puppy livable during the long evening. An adolescent that has lost its manners gets them back fastest through place, because every arrival and every meal becomes a repetition. An anxious dog gains a floor: a spot that is its own, where good things happen and nothing is asked, and the storm and fireworks plans on this site are built on it. A dog that guards the couch gets a place bed beside it and a rule, which removes the couch from the argument. Place is the first skill in every stay for all of those reasons.

  • Puppies: the bed in a day, the duration over weeks
  • Adolescents: manners back through every arrival and meal
  • Anxious dogs: a floor and a spot of their own
  • Couch guarders: a bed beside it and a rule

The Houston factor

Houseguests, patios, storm nights and a summer indoors.

Houston life is built for place: a house full of guests from Halloween to New Year's, a patio culture that runs all year, storm nights in spring that need a den, and a summer that keeps the dog indoors from mid-morning to dusk, when a dog with no off switch becomes a dog that barks at the window all afternoon. Our trainers build place in the training home with real deliveries and real meals, proof it on the Towne Lake boardwalk and at the patios along 290 with a towel under a table, and hand it over in your house with the bed where it will live. A dog on place beside the dinner table at Thanksgiving is the skill's final exam.

1

A raised bed with a clear edge, in the room where life happens

2

Lure the dog onto the bed, mark, pay, and release with one word, ten times

3

Add a second of duration, then five, then thirty, paying on the bed

4

Step away, return, pay; go out of sight, return, pay

5

Add distractions: a dropped keys, the doorbell, a meal being served

6

Build to an hour over a month, with a chew for the long holds

7

Take it on the road: a towel at a patio, a bed at the in-laws', the mat at the vet

The program

Place is the first skill in every stay, and the how-to guide teaches it at home.

Every stay installs place first: Gold, two weeks at $2,500, builds it to real duration alongside the walk, the door and impulse control; Platinum, three weeks at $3,750, proofs it under the distractions that matter for a reactive or anxious dog and adds unlimited lessons afterwards. The how-to guide on this site teaches it step by step for families doing it themselves, and an in-home lesson at $220 gets the first week right. The place command journal post is the short version, and the free phone consultation is where our team asks whether your dog has an off switch.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

What is the difference between place and stay?

Stay asks the dog to hold a position, sit or down, and breaks down after a minute or two. Place asks the dog to stay on a defined spot in any position until released, which is why it can be held for an hour. Place is the household skill; stay is the obedience exercise.

How long does it take to teach place?

A day to teach the bed, a week to get a minute of duration, a month to build an hour with distractions. The sessions are short, a few minutes several times a day, and the duration grows only as fast as the dog succeeds.

Can my dog chew a bone or sleep on place?

Yes, that is the point. Place is a boundary, not a posture, and a dog that settles in and chews or sleeps on the bed has understood it. The only rule is four feet on the bed until the release word.

Does place work for an anxious dog?

It is one of the best things for one. A spot of its own where good things happen and nothing is asked gives an anxious dog a floor, and the storm and fireworks plans are built on it. It is taught with food and patience, never pressure, for that dog.
