How to stop a dog barking in the yard

The yard barker is the dog behind most letters from the association, and the family's plan is usually a bark collar and a hope. Our trainers' plan is to take the yard away as a job, and here is how it runs, from the first supervised trip out to the letter that stops coming.

Why it happens

A yard is a stage, and a dog left on it performs.

A dog alone in a Houston yard has a fence with a dog on the other side, a sidewalk with walkers, a street with deliveries, squirrels in the live oaks, ducks at the pond behind the section and a lawn crew next door, and it has nothing to do but announce all of it. Barking is self-rewarding: the walker walks on and the dog believes it drove them off, and by afternoon it has done it forty times. Some dogs bark from boredom, some from a guardian's instinct, some from frustration at the dog behind the fence, and all of them get better at it daily. The yard is not the problem; the unsupervised hours in it are, and the plan removes those before it teaches anything.

  • A fence, a sidewalk, a street, squirrels and a lawn crew
  • Barking is self-rewarding; the walker always leaves
  • Forty rehearsals by afternoon
  • The unsupervised hours are the problem

The method

Six steps, starting with the yard as a supervised place only.

The first month is management: the dog is in the yard only with a person, and its day is restructured indoors. The quiet cue is taught during that month, by day, at the fence, with the triggers the yard provides.

1

The yard supervised only, for a month: out with a person for a purpose, a potty trip, a game with a start and a stop, and back in

2

A structured walk morning and evening, and a job indoors, a search for kibble, a training session, a chew on place, so the patrol has no energy behind it

3

The quiet cue taught by day at the fence: let the dog bark two or three times at a real trigger, say quiet once, mark and pay the first second of silence, grow the silence before the pay

4

Place indoors during the busy hours, the delivery window and the lawn crew's day, with a chew, in the air conditioning

5

A reply to the association describing the plan, which usually stops the letters while it takes effect

6

Yard time returned a little at a time after a clean month, supervised at first, and never all day again

The mistakes

The bark collar as the plan, shouting from the window, the dog door, and the yard as daycare.

A bark collar suppresses the bark in some dogs, teaches nothing, and on a dog that barks from frustration or fear makes the underlying feeling worse; it is not the plan and it does not satisfy the neighbors for long. Shouting from the window is joining in. A dog door that gives the dog the yard all day gives it the stage all day, and it closes for the month. And the yard as daycare, a dog put out at eight and brought in at six because the family works, is the root of almost every yard barker our trainers meet; a dog with a walk, a job and a place bed indoors is a quieter dog than one with an acre and nothing to do. In a Houston summer the yard all day is a welfare problem too.

Fence fighting with the neighbor's dog is the yard barker's cousin and has its own page; the management is the same and the training adds neutrality at the fence.

  • A bark collar is not the plan
  • Shouting is joining in
  • The dog door closes for the month
  • The yard is not daycare
  • Fence fighting is its own page

Proofing around Houston

Master-planned fences, a pond behind the section, delivery drivers all day and an association that counts.

Houston's master-planned sections put a dog behind every fence, a retention pond full of ducks behind the section, a delivery driver every hour and a lawn crew weekly, and the associations in Bridgeland, Cinco Ranch, Sienna and The Woodlands enforce nuisance clauses on neighbor complaints; the HOA rules guide on this site covers what the letter means and how a written plan answers it. The summer makes the case for the plan on welfare grounds alone: no dog should be in a Houston yard between ten and six from May to September, and a dog that is indoors with a job is not barking at the fence. Our trainers teach the quiet cue with real deliveries and set up the yard rule at the go-home session.

  • A dog behind every fence and ducks behind the section
  • Deliveries hourly, the lawn crew weekly
  • The HOA letter and the written plan
  • Indoors in the heat, for welfare and for quiet

When to call

A fence fighter, a fearful barker, or a dog that barks all day when left.

A dog that fights through the fence with the neighbor's dog needs the fence-fighting method, neutrality built at a distance, and a Platinum stay at $3,750 if it has become aggressive. A dog that barks at strangers from the yard out of fear needs the fearful dog work first. A dog that barks all day indoors when left is a separation case, and a camera tells you. For the ordinary yard barker, a Gold stay at $2,500 builds the quiet cue, place, the structured walk and the off switch into the foundation and hands over the yard rule at the go-home session; an in-home lesson at $220 sets up the month and the cue at your own fence. The excessive barking page describes the program.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How do I stop my dog barking in the backyard?

Take the yard away as a place the dog patrols alone for a month: out with a person for a purpose and back in. Teach a quiet cue by day at the fence, paid for silence. Give the dog a walk and a job indoors so the patrol has no energy behind it, and keep it on place with a chew during the delivery hours.

Will a bark collar stop yard barking?

It may suppress it in some dogs and it teaches nothing, and on a dog barking from frustration or fear it makes the feeling worse. It is not a plan and the neighbors notice. Supervised yard time, a quiet cue, a walk and a job stop yard barking within a few weeks without one.

My HOA sent a letter about my dog barking in the yard. What do I do?

Bring the dog in today and make the yard supervised only, which stops most of the rehearsal at once, and reply to the association with the plan in writing, which usually stops the letters while it takes effect. Then teach the quiet cue by day at the fence and restructure the dog's day indoors.

Is it bad to leave my dog in the yard all day?

In Houston, yes, for two reasons: from May to September it is a heat risk between ten and six, and at any time of year a dog alone in a yard has nothing to do but bark at the fence. A dog indoors with a walk, a job and a place bed is a healthier and quieter dog than one with an acre and no company.
