New Year's Eve fireworks: the plan for your dog
More dogs are lost in the days around New Year's and July 4 than any other time of year, and most of them went out the gate or over the fence in the first ten minutes of noise. The plan is mostly about that first ten minutes.

The night
Legal outside the city limits, sold for the last two weeks of December, and loudest in the master-planned suburbs.
Fireworks are prohibited inside Houston city limits but legal in much of unincorporated Harris County and the surrounding counties, and the state sales window for the New Year's season opens in late December; check Harris County and your own city for the current rules, because Tomball, Katy and The Woodlands have their own. In practice that means the neighborhoods around the training home, Bridgeland, Towne Lake, Fairfield and the acreage toward Hockley, sound like a war from dark on the 31st until one in the morning, with a rehearsal on the 30th and stragglers through the weekend.
It is also cold enough, some years, that families are indoors with the dog for once, which makes the crate plan easier than July's.
- Illegal in the city, legal in much of the county
- Sales open in late December
- Loudest in the unincorporated suburbs
- Noise from the 30th through the weekend after
What it asks of your dog
Not to bolt, to settle in a den, and to have heard the sound before at a volume it could ignore.
The first job is containment: a dog that panics goes through a screen door, over a six-foot fence or out a gate someone left open, and a dog loose in the dark on New Year's Eve in Cypress is a dog on 290. Gates locked, doors closed, leash on for the last potty trip, and the dog inside before the first pop. The second job is a den: a covered crate in an interior room with white noise, which only works if the dog already loves the crate. The third is preparation: a dog that has heard recorded fireworks at low volume while eating dinner for two weeks has a reference point that a dog hearing it cold does not.
A microchip with a current registration and a collar with a phone number are the backstop for the night everything fails.
- Gates locked, doors closed, leash on after dark
- A covered crate in an interior room, already loved
- Two weeks of sound at low volume with food
- Chip registration and tags checked in December
How we prepare dogs
The July plan, run again in December, with the crate as the center.
The training home sits in the loud zone, so every dog in a December stay gets the fireworks plan as part of the program: sound work at dinner, the crate covered in an interior room, place with duration, and the night run by trainers who have done it with hundreds of dogs. Fear of noise is one of our specialties, and a dog that is already storm-phobic gets the same structure. At home, the plan below starts around the 17th.
From mid-December: recorded fireworks at a volume the dog ignores, during dinner, raised a notch every few days
Crate in an interior room, covered, with a chew, used for naps every day so it is home by the 31st
Place with duration daily, so the dog has a second off switch outside the crate
On the 30th and 31st: a long structured walk in the afternoon, the last potty trip on a leash before dark
Gates locked, doors closed, tags and chip checked, a photo taken
At dark: crate or place, white noise or a television, lights on, humans calm and boring
No correction for fear and no frantic comfort; a hand on the crate is enough

The same plan for July 4, the storm season behind it, and the lost-dog steps if it goes wrong.
The July 4 guide on this site is the summer version of this page, with the heat added. Storm season starts in March and the thunderstorm guide carries the sound work forward. If a dog does get out, BARC and Harris County Pets are the shelters to call and visit in person, daily, and the neighborhood apps are where most dogs are found; a current photo on your phone is the difference. Families who travel over New Year's book the holiday stay so the dog rides out the night with our trainers rather than a sitter.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Are fireworks legal in Cypress on New Year's Eve?
Cypress is unincorporated Harris County, where fireworks are generally legal outside the city limits during the state sales windows, subject to county restrictions in dry years. Check Harris County for the current rules. In practice the neighborhoods around the training home are loud from dark until after midnight.
Should I walk my dog on New Year's Eve?
In the afternoon, yes, a long structured walk. After dark, no. The last potty trip is on a leash before the first pop, and the dog is inside with the doors and gates closed for the night. Most dogs lost on the holiday went out during a walk or a yard trip after dark.
Can I start the sound work a week out?
A week helps; two is better; a month is ideal for a dog that is already noise-phobic. The volume has to stay at a level the dog ignores while eating, raised slowly, so the timeline is set by the dog. Any amount beats hearing it cold on the night.
My dog is fine with fireworks but goes crazy at the window. What then?
Then the window is the problem and place is the answer: no free access to the front windows after dark, a bed in an interior room, and a quiet cue with a reward for silence. The window-barking guide on this site covers the method.
