English bulldog training in Houston: stubbornness, heat and short training sessions

Bulldogs are not hard to love and are sometimes hard to move. This page covers what the breed is like to train, the habits that set in by eighteen months, how our Cypress stay adapts to a flat-faced dog in Houston heat, and what each program costs.

Temperament

A former bull-baiter turned couch companion

The English bulldog began in England, where early bulldogs were used in bull-baiting before the sport was banned, and breeders then reshaped the dog into the calm companion we know. It is a medium-sized, heavy, low dog with a short coat and a short muzzle. Bulldogs are affectionate, steady and usually gentle with children, with a streak of stubbornness that owners talk about constantly.

That stubbornness is mostly a dog that sees no reason to hurry. A bulldog will happily do what you ask if it pays and if the session is short. Long drills turn it off. Our trainers use food, praise and very clear boundaries, keep sessions to a few minutes, and end on a win. Patience matters more with a bulldog than with almost any breed we train.

  • Short muzzle, short coat, heavy build
  • Affectionate and usually gentle with kids
  • Stubborn when training runs long
  • Works best in short, rewarding sessions

8 to 18 months

Planting, pulling and the toy nobody else may touch

By a year old, many bulldogs have learned the plant: they sit down on the sidewalk and refuse to move, and the owner either drags or carries them. Others pull toward every person to say hello, jump on guests with surprising force, and mouth hands in play. Some start guarding a chew, a bowl or a toy, stiffening or growling when a person or dog comes near.

The plant is a negotiation the dog has been winning. We teach a leash that means walk with me, with rewards for moving and no payout for sitting down. Jumping and mouthing get clear boundaries. Guarding is behavior modification, not obedience, and we look at it carefully on the free phone consultation because it changes the program. A bulldog that stiffens over a chew needs a different plan than one that simply loves its toys.

The stay

Short sessions, cool rooms and a lot of patience

A bulldog stays in our trainer's own home in Cypress with a small number of dogs. Most of its training happens inside in the air conditioning, in short sessions spread across the day. Outdoor walks happen only in the coolest parts of the morning and evening, and we stop at the first sign of heavy breathing. Your Monday, Wednesday and Friday updates will show a lot of cool-floor lying down between lessons.

Field trips go to air-conditioned pet and hardware stores, which suit a bulldog perfectly: real distractions, cool floors, and people who want to say hello. The dog learns to walk on a loose leash, sit for greetings and hold place. The go-home session shows you how to keep sessions short and how to move a bulldog that plants.

1

Indoor sessions of a few minutes, many times a day

2

Rewards for moving forward on the leash

3

Sit for greetings, no jumping

4

Place and door boundaries

5

Air-conditioned store trips for public practice

6

Go-home: short sessions and the no-plant walk

A thirsty dog, a reminder that a bulldog needs water and shade in a Houston summer

Houston life

A short-nosed dog in a long Houston summer

Heat is the biggest Houston issue for a bulldog. Short-nosed breeds have a harder time cooling themselves, and the AVMA lists them among the dogs at higher risk in hot weather. From May to September, walk only at dawn or after dark, keep outings short, test pavement by hand and bring water. Most exercise in summer should be indoor play and training. Talk to your vet about your dog's limits.

Pools are the second issue. Bulldogs are built heavy in the front and are not natural swimmers, so in backyard-pool neighborhoods like Cinco Ranch, Towne Lake or Memorial, a pool fence and supervision matter more than any training. We teach a strong place and a stay away from the pool edge, which helps, but it never replaces a barrier.

  • Summer walks only at dawn or after dark
  • Short outings, water always with you
  • Pool fence and supervision in every season
  • Training in air conditioning through the heat

Programs and prices

Gold at $2,500 for most bulldogs

Gold Board & Train is two weeks for $2,500. It covers sit/stay, place/stay, loose leash walking, door boundaries, jumping and impulse control, and includes a go-home session, one extra lesson and lifelong support. That fits most bulldogs. Platinum is three weeks for $3,750 and is the right program when a bulldog guards food or toys, growls or snaps, because it adds behavior modification and unlimited private lessons.

Bulldog puppies under four months are a great fit for the Puppy Development Bundle, four sessions for $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home, which covers crate, potty, nipping and early leash work. An adult bulldog that only needs help with the plant can book private lessons at $160 in Cypress or $220 in your living room. Once the free phone consultation has settled the program, a $250 deposit holds your bulldog's dates.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How much does English bulldog training cost in Houston?

Gold Board & Train costs $2,500 for two weeks and fits most bulldogs with pulling, planting, jumping and door problems. Platinum costs $3,750 for three weeks when there is resource guarding or growling. The Puppy Development Bundle is $550 or $750 for puppies under four months, and private lessons are $160 in Cypress or $220 in your home.

How do I get my bulldog to stop sitting down on walks?

Stop paying for the plant. If sitting down leads to being carried, a rest or a turn home, the dog keeps doing it. We reward forward movement, keep walks short and cool, and turn the walk into a game the dog wants to continue. Check the heat first, though: a bulldog that stops in summer may simply be too hot.

Is board and train safe for a bulldog in Houston heat?

Yes, with the right plan. During a stay at our Cypress home, most of a bulldog's training happens indoors in air conditioning, outdoor walks happen only in the coolest hours, and field trips go to air-conditioned stores. We stop any session at the first sign of heavy breathing. Tell us about your dog's health and your vet's advice on the call.

Are English bulldogs too stubborn to train?

No. Bulldogs learn well when sessions are short and the reward is worth it. What looks like stubbornness is usually a dog that sees no reason to hurry or is too warm to care. Keep training to a few minutes at a time, use food and praise, and end on a success. Consistency wins with this breed.
