How to train an english bulldog

The bulldogs that come to the training home are affectionate, comic and immovable, and every family has the same story: it is wonderful, it will not walk, and the vet has warned us about the heat. The plan below is written around the breathing first and the stubbornness second.

The breed in Houston

A short-faced, heavy, comic dog in the one climate it was never built for.

The english bulldog is a companion breed built from a working past it can no longer perform: a short face that makes breathing an effort, a heavy body on short legs, skin folds that need care, and a temperament that is affectionate, stubborn, comic and calm. Houston is the hardest place in the country to own one. The short muzzle cannot cool the dog, so a bulldog overheats faster than any breed we train, and the heavy body cannot swim, so every pool and pond is a drowning risk. What our trainers see: a dog that plants on the sidewalk and will not move, that snores through every cue, that guards a bowl or a couch, that greets guests with a body slam, and a family that has been told by the vet to be careful in the heat and is not sure what that means for training. It means the training happens indoors and at dawn.

  • A short face that cannot cool the dog
  • A heavy body that cannot swim
  • Stubborn, comic, affectionate and calm
  • Plants on the sidewalk and guards the couch
  • Training indoors and at dawn, by necessity

The puppy months

Eight weeks to six months: short sessions, food, the crate and the heat rule from the first day.

A bulldog puppy learns slowly and remembers forever, so the first months are patient: place with duration and the crate with meals inside it, a greeting rule with four paws on the floor, a walk at the knee in the air conditioning and then in the yard at dawn, and a leave-it, all taught in three-minute sessions with food, which the breed will do anything for. The heat rule starts at ten weeks: no outdoor time between mid-morning and dusk from April to October, water everywhere, and the puppy carried inside at the first heavy breathing. Handling of the folds, the paws and the face daily makes the lifelong skin care easy. Food is measured, because a fat bulldog breathes worse. Socialization is calm exposure at the stores at noon.

  • Three-minute sessions with food
  • Place, the crate and the greeting rule
  • The walk at the knee indoors, then at dawn
  • The heat rule from ten weeks
  • Handling of the folds and the face daily

Adolescence

Six to eighteen months: the plant, the guard and the snore, in a body that gets heavier.

A bulldog's adolescence is a slow-motion rebellion: the dog plants on the sidewalk and cannot be moved, declines cues it knows, guards the couch, the bed or the bowl with a low growl, and body-slams guests. Pressure achieves nothing with this breed; food, patience and consequence do. The walk is taught from a standstill with the dog paid at the knee and the family waiting rather than hauling. Guarding is trades and a rule about where the dog eats and rests, early, because a bulldog that has guarded a couch for a year needs a stay. The greeting rule is kept by every visitor. And the weight is watched, because the adolescent bulldog that gets fat is the adult that cannot walk at all.

1

Eight to twelve weeks: crate, place, the greeting rule, handling, the heat rule

2

Three to six months: the walk at the knee at dawn, leave-it, store trips at noon, the puppy bundle if you want help

3

Six to nine months: the structured walk on the street at dawn, place through guests, trades for anything held

4

Nine to fourteen months: the plant met with patience and food, guarding met with trades and a rest rule

5

Fourteen to eighteen months: neutrality proofed in store aisles and on cool-morning sidewalks, the settle at a patio in the evening

6

Eighteen months on: the calm adult, kept with short walks, a job for the mind and a measured bowl

7

Every summer for life: indoors from mid-morning to dusk, and inside at the first heavy breathing

The problems we see

Planting, guarding, body-slamming guests, the heat and the weight.

Planting is a structured walk taught from a standstill with food at the knee and a family that waits, and it is also a heat check, because a bulldog that stops on a warm sidewalk may be in trouble. Guarding is trades and a rest rule, and a bite history changes the plan to a Platinum stay with an consultation first. The body slam is a greeting rule and place with duration. The heat is management that never relaxes: dawn and dusk only, the pavement test, water, the air conditioning, and inside at the first heavy breathing. The weight is a measured bowl and a vet who agrees with the number. The bulldog cannot swim and every pool needs a fence or a life jacket and supervision. Separation anxiety is less common than in the working breeds, but the crate and alone time on purpose prevent it.

  • A structured walk with food and patience for the plant
  • Trades and a rest rule for the guarding
  • A greeting rule and place for the body slam
  • Heat management that never relaxes
  • A fence or a life jacket at every pool

Summer and enrichment

The breathing rules the summer, and the job is short, indoor and food-driven.

A bulldog's Houston summer is indoors from mid-morning to dusk, with a brief walk at dawn and another after dark, the pavement test at the door, water everywhere, a cooling mat and the air conditioning, and it is carried inside at the first sign of heavy breathing, a wide tongue or a blue tinge to the gums. The job is short and mental: a three-minute obedience session, a search for a few pieces of kibble, a trick, a puzzle, a chew, a walk through a store aisle at noon. A kiddie pool with an inch of water in the shade is the only water a bulldog should be in without a life jacket. The cool months are the bulldog's reward, and a slow November walk on the Bridgeland paths is what it lives for.

  • Indoors from mid-morning to dusk
  • Inside at the first heavy breathing
  • Short, food-driven mental work as the job
  • An inch of water in the shade, or a life jacket
  • The slow walks in the cool months

Which program

Gold for the manners, Platinum for the guarder, the bundle for the puppy, all timed to the cool months.

Gold, two weeks at $2,500, is the bulldog program most often: place, the greeting rule, the structured walk, leave-it and impulse control, taught with food and patience and handed over in a go-home session that shows the family how to wait rather than haul. Platinum, three weeks at $3,750, is for the bulldog that guards the couch or the bowl with a history, with an consultation first and unlimited lessons afterwards. The Puppy Development Bundle, $550 in Cypress or $750 at home, starts a puppy under four months. Our team times bulldog stays to the cool months where it can, because the field trips that make a stay work happen outdoors, and the French bulldog guide on this site covers the smaller cousin with the same face.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Are english bulldogs hard to train?

Slow, not hard. The breed learns with food and patience in short sessions and remembers forever, and it declines anything taught with pressure. The difficulty in Houston is the heat, which limits the outdoor work to dawn and dusk for half the year and puts the training indoors.

Can an english bulldog live in Houston?

With strict management, yes. The short face cannot cool the dog, so a bulldog lives indoors from mid-morning to dusk from April to October, walks briefly at dawn and after dark, and is carried inside at the first heavy breathing. It cannot swim, so every pool needs a fence or a life jacket. Many Houston families manage it well.

Why does my bulldog stop on walks and refuse to move?

Planting is the breed's way of declining, and it is also a heat warning, so check the dog first. Then a structured walk taught from a standstill with food at the knee and a family that waits rather than hauls ends the plant over a few weeks. Hauling a bulldog achieves nothing.

Can my bulldog go in the pool?

Not without a life jacket and supervision, and even then briefly. The heavy body and short legs cannot swim, and a bulldog that falls in a pool drowns. A kiddie pool with an inch of water in the shade is the safe version, and a fence around the real pool is the rule.
