Board and train, Willis

Board and train in Willis: Lake Conroe's north shore, with pickup available

Willis is lake homes on Lake Conroe's north shore, acreage backing onto the Sam Houston National Forest, boats, docks and a lot of off-leash country. Its dogs need a recall that works across water and trees, and that is the skill a Willis stay is built around.

The stay, from Willis

An hour down I-45 for you, or a pickup at the lake house for the dog.

Willis is about 55 to 65 minutes from the training home outside rush hour, down I-45 and across on 99 or 249, and most families let the transport do it. Our trainer collects the dog at your lake house or acreage, runs the first lesson there so you see the recall and the leash work before the dog leaves, and the drive south is the dog's first exercise in settling in a vehicle. The training home is a house in Cypress with a limited number of dogs, and day one there is quiet on purpose.

From day two the work is daily: the house, the sidewalks and stores around it, and the lake near the training home for the water manners a Lake Conroe dog needs. Updates come Monday, Wednesday and Friday with photos and video, so a week at the lake without the dog still has the dog in it. The stay ends at your door for transport families and VIP graduates, with the go-home session on the dock, at the shore and along the tree line, and at the training home for anyone who drove.

What a Willis dog practices

A recall across water and trees, a wait at the dock and manners in a boat.

The north-shore dog has three jobs: come back from the forest when called, stay on the dock until released, and ride in a boat without launching at the first bird. The stay starts the recall on a long line in open ground near the training home and stretches it out daily, adds a wait at the water's edge and a recall out of the water at the lake nearby, and teaches place as a settle that transfers to a boat deck. Door manners and a loose leash for downtown Willis are the easy part by comparison.

The go-home visit is where the forest and the lake come in. The Sam Houston National Forest trails give real wildlife scent and distance for the recall, Lake Conroe's docks give the wait and the release, and downtown Willis gives a sidewalk with trucks and strangers. Check the national forest's site for current trail rules and leash requirements before you take the dog out yourself, and remember that Lake Conroe is alligator water; a dog that enters only on release is a safer dog.

  • Long-line recall stretched across open ground
  • A wait at the dock that holds until released
  • A settle on a boat deck
  • Neutrality on the forest trails at a distance

Which program Willis families choose

VIP for the off-leash lake life, Platinum for the chaser, Gold for the friendly boat dog.

VIP at $10,000 fits the terrain best: six weeks, complete off-leash reliability, the Mini-Educator included and introduced properly, duration stays, transport home and the handover on your dock with unlimited in-home lessons afterwards. Platinum at $3,750 is the fit for the dog that chases deer, guards the dock or panics in a storm; three weeks adds behavior modification, field trips and unlimited private lessons, and it is the program most families across our service area choose.

Gold at $2,500 covers the friendly boat dog that pulls, jumps and cannot sit still: two weeks of sit and stay, place, loose leash, door boundaries, jumping and impulse control, with a go-home session, one added lesson and lifelong support. Silver at $1,500 is a one-week refresher for a graduate before the summer season on the water.

  • VIP for off-leash reliability across water and trees
  • Platinum for chasing, guarding and storm anxiety

Prices and the deposit

The published prices, and the $250 transport that makes Willis workable.

Expect $2,500 for the two-week Gold, $3,750 for Platinum and $10,000 for the six-week VIP. The $250 reservation deposit reserves the dates and is subtracted from the program price. Transport is $250 for pickup and return with the first lesson at your home, and from Willis it replaces two hour-long drives each way with a handover on your own dock; VIP includes it. Families who prefer to drive can drop off at the training home any day from 6am to 9pm and come back for the go-home session there.

Private lessons afterwards are $160 at the training home or $220 at your house; Platinum and VIP include them without limit, and at this distance the in-home version is the one that gets used. Boarding with training refreshers is available to graduates, which suits a lake family that travels. Every number is on the pricing page, and the consultation call is free.

Willis specifics

Alligators, forest wildlife and a storm season on the lake.

Lake Conroe is alligator water, the forest has snakes and coyotes, and a dog off leash in Willis needs a recall that beats all of it, which is why the wait at the edge and the stop at distance are built before the off-leash work. From May to September outdoor sessions run early and late, with store aisles at midday, and the dock work happens in the cooler hours. Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, is a real consideration an hour from Cypress: the storm plan for the dog is agreed at booking, along with who moves it and when. Heartworm prevention runs all year by the lake.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Is Willis too far for board and train in Cypress?

No. About 55 to 65 minutes outside rush hour is a normal transport distance for us. The $250 door-to-door pickup and return collects the dog at your lake house, includes the first lesson there and brings the dog back for the go-home session on your own dock. VIP includes it.

Which program fits a dog we want off leash on the lake and in the forest?

VIP at $10,000. Six weeks builds complete off-leash reliability with the Mini-Educator introduced properly, and the handover happens on your dock and along your tree line with unlimited in-home lessons afterwards. Platinum gets a reliable recall on a long line, which is enough for some families.

Will you work the dog on Lake Conroe?

Water work during the stay uses the lake close to the Cypress training home rather than Lake Conroe itself. Lake Conroe comes in at the go-home session, where our trainer runs the wait at your dock and the recall out of the water in the place the dog will actually swim. Alligator awareness is part of that visit.

Where does the go-home session happen for Willis?

At your home for transport families and every VIP graduate, on the dock, at the shore and along the tree line. In Cypress, at the training home, when the family handled drop-off themselves. Most Willis families take the at-home version because the water and the trees are the whole point.

What if a storm is named while my dog is with you?

We agree the plan at booking: who moves the dog, where, and when, so nobody is deciding on I-45 with a storm in the Gulf. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston page is the source we point families to for the forecast.
