Dog training in West University: small lots, sidewalks and Rice Village patios

West U is one of the most walked neighborhoods in Houston. Every dog goes out three times a day past every other dog, and the ones that pull, lunge or bark turn a nice routine into a chore. The fix is a walk with structure and a dog with an off switch, and both are teachable in a few weeks.

How it works from West U

Lessons on your sidewalk, or a stay in Cypress with the handover on your block.

West U is a lesson neighborhood: the problems live on the sidewalk and at the front door, and a trainer at your house for $220 a session works them exactly where they happen. Four to six lessons fix pulling, greetings and the patio settle in a dog that has some foundation.

For a dog that needs a reset, a board and train stay in the training home in Cypress installs the foundation in two or three weeks. With the $250 transport we collect and return the dog and run the go-home session on your own street, past the neighbors' dogs, which is the only place the walk has to hold. Updates come Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

West U dogs

Ten feet from the door to the sidewalk, and every dog in the neighborhood on it.

The West U dog problem is density. The front door opens onto a sidewalk with a dog on it, the walk passes twenty dogs in twenty minutes, and the patio at Rice Village has a dog under every second table. A dog that is merely excited becomes a dog that lunges, because every walk rehearses it. The doodles and goldens pull; the small breeds bark; the shepherds and Dobermans start to guard the walk.

We build neutrality: a dog that sees another dog and looks at you, walking past on a loose leash. It starts with structure in the house, moves to distance on quiet streets, and finishes on real sidewalks with real dogs at closing distances. That is Platinum's work; Gold covers the manners for the dog that pulls but does not lunge.

  • Walking past dogs on a narrow sidewalk without a scene
  • A settle under the table at Rice Village
  • A calm exit through a front door onto a busy sidewalk
  • Quiet at the window on a street with foot traffic

Where we train near you

Colonial Park, Rice Village and Hermann Park.

Lessons and go-home sessions in West U use your own block first, then Colonial Park for loose-leash work, the Rice Village patios for the settle, and the edge of Hermann Park for recall on a long line and neutrality at a distance. The pet stores on Kirby and Bissonnet are the neutrality environment for a dog that is not ready for the park.

From May to September the sidewalk is a heat problem by mid-morning; lessons run early and late, and the store aisles carry the afternoons.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Do you offer in-home lessons in West University?

Yes, $220 per session across West U, Southside Place, Bellaire and the Rice area. Lessons work the sidewalk, the door and the patio exactly where the problem happens.

My dog lunges at every dog on the sidewalk. Lessons or a stay?

Usually a stay. Reactivity needs daily structure and controlled exposure at distances the dog can hold, which is what three weeks of Platinum provides. Lessons afterwards, unlimited with Platinum, teach you the handling on your own block.

How does a stay work from West U?

Your dog lives in our home in Cypress, about 40 minutes up 610 and 290. Drop off yourself or add the $250 transport for pickup, return and the go-home session at your house. Photo and video updates arrive Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Can you start with a puppy?

Yes. The Puppy Development Bundle is four in-home sessions for puppies under four months, $750, covering the crate, potty routine, the first commands and the greeting rule, which in West U matters from the first walk.
