Porter and New Caney
Dog training in Porter: Valley Ranch, new construction and dogs that meet a lot of strangers
Porter is Valley Ranch: new streets, new houses, new neighbors and a dog that meets more strangers in a month than a country dog meets in a year. New Caney next door is the opposite, acreage and older lots where the dog has space and no one to practice on. We train both, and the fix is mostly the same.

Porter dogs
A dog that meets a stranger every day needs a rule for strangers.
Valley Ranch fills a little more every month. That means moving trucks, contractors at the door, a new family two doors down with a new dog, and a town center full of people on a Friday night. A young dog that has no rule for strangers turns every one of them into an event: jumping, barking, or the lunge that makes a neighbor step back. It has simply never been told what to do when a person appears.
The rule we teach is simple: a person is not your business until you are released. The dog learns to hold a place while the door opens, to keep a loose leash while someone passes, and to greet with four feet on the ground when invited. New Caney dogs on acreage need the same rule for a different reason: they meet fewer people, so each one is a bigger deal, and they need the recall an unfenced lot demands.
- Place while the contractor walks through the house
- A loose leash past the new neighbor and her puppy
- A greeting with four feet on the ground, on your word
- A recall across the acreage in New Caney
How it works from Porter
Fifty minutes up 59 is a pickup drive, and the first lesson comes with it.
Porter to the training home in Cypress is about 50 minutes outside rush hour, 59 north past Kingwood and then west across the top of the metro, and longer at the wrong hour. Most families here use the $250 transportation service. We collect the dog at your Valley Ranch door or your New Caney gate, and at the end of the program we bring it back and teach the first lesson in your house that day.
Drop-off at the training home, off 290 near Fry Road, is always available, and drop-off families hold the go-home session there. The dog lives in our trainer's home with a small group of other dogs, trains all day in the house, the yard and on field trips, and shows up in your messages with photos and video every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The six-week VIP program has the transport built in.

Where we train near you
Valley Ranch Town Center, the 59 stores and Lake Houston Wilderness Park.
Valley Ranch Town Center is the busiest sidewalk in Porter and the right place to prove a heel: patios, families, strollers, other dogs and music on a weekend evening. The stores along the 59 corridor supply the indoor practice, with carts, automatic doors and strangers who want to say hello. Both are where the in-home lesson and follow-ups go once the dog has the basics.
Lake Houston Wilderness Park in New Caney is a City of Houston park with forest trails and a lot of wildlife scent, good for a long-line recall and a leashed walk with real distractions; check the city's parks site for the current rules on dogs, camping and trails. In summer the outdoor work moves to early morning and evening, and mosquitoes in the bottomland make heartworm prevention a twelve-month habit.
- A heel through the Town Center crowd on a Friday
- Down in a 59-corridor store aisle
- Long-line recall on the Wilderness Park trails
- Early and late outdoor sessions from May to September
Lessons in Porter
In-home lessons at $220, and the first three weeks in a new house.
A private lesson at your Porter or New Caney home is $220, or $160 at the training home in Cypress. For a family that just moved into Valley Ranch, the most useful lesson is the first-three-weeks plan: how to set up the crate, the doors and the yard so the dog learns the new house as a calm place rather than a construction site full of strangers. For an acreage dog, the lesson is the recall on your own land.
Puppies under four months take the Puppy Development Bundle, four private sessions of 45 to 60 minutes for $750 at your home or $550 in Cypress, covering sit, place, stay, recall, crate and potty guidance, socialization, nipping and jumping. A Valley Ranch puppy has hundreds of new people to meet, and the bundle teaches it to meet them calmly instead of at full speed.
Day one in the new house: the crate goes in a quiet room, not the entry
Week one: place near the front door, and every visitor is a place rep
Week two: the structured walk around the new block, past every new neighbor
Week three: the Town Center on a quiet evening, then a busy one
Then decide with our team whether a stay finishes the job

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Do you pick up in Porter and New Caney?
Yes. The $250 transportation service collects your dog at your door in Valley Ranch, Porter or New Caney, returns it at the end of the program and includes the first lesson in your home. VIP includes it. Most families here take it because the drive up 59 and across is close to an hour each way.
We just moved into Valley Ranch and the dog is a mess. Is it the move?
Partly. A move removes every routine a dog knew, and a new house full of contractors and neighbors gives it nothing to hold on to. Most dogs settle once the crate, the doors and the walk have rules again. If the dog was already pulling and jumping before the move, a stay fixes both at once.
Can you train an acreage dog in New Caney to come back?
Yes. The recall is built in stages during the stay and proofed on a long line and in public, and the VIP program adds e-collar reliability at distance. The in-home lesson after transport runs the recall on your own land, because that is the only place it truly matters to you.
How long is the drive from Porter to Cypress?
About 50 minutes outside rush hour, taking 59 north past Kingwood and then across the north side of Houston to 290 near Fry Road. It is long enough that the pickup service is the standard choice, and short enough that a Saturday drop-off is realistic for a family that wants to see the training home.
Is Lake Houston Wilderness Park a good place to practice?
For a leashed walk and a long-line recall, yes. It is a City of Houston park with forest trails and enough wildlife scent to test a dog, and the city's parks site has the current rules. Go early in summer, carry water, and keep the leash on near water.
