Puppy training in Kingwood: greenbelt puppies and the forest's distractions

Kingwood is the livable forest, and a puppy raised here grows up with a greenbelt at the end of the street, deer in the front yard at dusk and a whole town of Labs and doodles walking past the house. Every one of those is a distraction the puppy has to learn to ignore before it is big enough to drag you toward it.

The four sessions

Four in-home sessions, with the greenbelt used as the classroom from session three.

The first session is the week the puppy arrives: our trainer sets the crate where the household lives, picks the potty spot in the yard away from the deer path, teaches the marker word and shows the kids how a puppy is picked up and put down. The nipping plan starts the same day, because a Lab puppy in a house with children finds ankles within hours.

The next three visits are spaced about a week apart. Sit and the place bed come first, then a recall inside the house, then a stay with duration and the leash on your own street. Session three moves to the greenbelt trailhead nearest your house, on a long line once the vet has cleared the ground, so the puppy learns to check in with you while bikes, joggers and other dogs pass. Session four is a review somewhere new plus the plan for the adolescent months, when the greenbelt gets interesting.

1

Session one: crate placement, the potty spot, the marker word, handling, and the plan for nipping in the first week.

2

Session two: sit, the place bed in the family room, recall between rooms, and jumping stopped before it starts.

3

Session three: the long line at the greenbelt trailhead, stay with a few seconds, and the leash on your street.

4

Session four: a review in a new spot, the deer rule, and what months four through twelve look like.

A Kingwood puppy's first months

Heat by the calendar, the forest from a lap, and a deer at every corner.

Kingwood's tree cover helps, but from May through September a puppy still lives on the heat calendar: outings before nine and after seven, shaded grass for potty trips, and a hand on the pavement before any walk. Fire ants come up along the greenbelt edges after rain, and the mosquitoes never stop, which is why heartworm prevention starts at the first vet visit and continues for life.

Before the vaccine series is done, usually around sixteen weeks, the puppy sees Kingwood without touching the ground other dogs use. The Town Center patios work from a mat under your chair, the pet and hardware stores on Kingwood Drive work from a cart, and East End Park on Lake Houston works from a bench in your lap while kayaks, geese and strollers go by. The greenbelt trails themselves come after the vet's clearance, on a long line, at a quiet hour.

Kingwood houses sit on forested lots with HOA rules, greenbelt access from most streets and a deer herd that walks the front yards at dusk. A puppy that sees deer on a leash in its first weeks, and is paid for looking back at you instead of lunging, becomes a dog that can walk the greenbelt at dusk.

  • Outdoor time before nine and after seven from May through September; shaded grass for potty trips
  • Kingwood Town Center patios from a mat, the Kingwood Drive stores from a cart
  • East End Park from a bench and a lap until the vet clears the ground
  • Deer watched from a leash and rewarded for a look back, from the first week

Bundle or a stay

The bundle raises the puppy; a stay at four to five months builds the trail dog.

Under four months, a puppy needs you, a crate and a few short lessons a day, not two weeks away from home, so we do not board puppies in the bundle window. From about four to five months the picture changes: the puppy can hold structure for a full day, and a Gold stay at our Cypress home, two weeks at $2,500, builds sit and stay, place and stay, the loose leash, door boundaries and impulse control before adolescence hardens the habits.

For a Kingwood dog that will live on the greenbelt, Platinum at $3,750 is the more common choice later, because its three weeks add the structured heel, field trips into real public places and behavior work for the dog that has already started lunging at deer or bikes. The $250 transport brings the go-home session to your Kingwood house.

  • Bundle now: four sessions at your Kingwood home for $750, under four months
  • Gold at four to five months and up: two weeks, $2,500, the foundation before adolescence
  • Platinum for the greenbelt dog: three weeks, $3,750, heel, field trips and behavior work
  • $250 transport for a later stay, with the go-home session in your home

Prices

What Kingwood families pay for the bundle, and for what comes after.

The Puppy Development Bundle is $750 at your Kingwood home. The $550 price applies at our training home in Cypress, and it is available to you, but the drive is about 45 to 55 minutes each way outside rush hour via the Beltway or 1960, four times, with a puppy that cannot yet hold its bladder through the trip. Most Kingwood families do the math and book the in-home version.

Once the puppy passes four months, private lessons continue the work at $220 in your home or $160 in Cypress. A stay is reserved with a $250 deposit, and the $250 door-to-door transport includes the first lesson at your house, which for a Kingwood family means the go-home session happens on your own street.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

When can my Kingwood puppy walk on the greenbelt trails?

Once your veterinarian confirms the vaccine series is complete, which for most puppies is around sixteen weeks. Until then the trails are for looking at from your arms at the trailhead. After clearance, start at a quiet hour on a long line, reward every look back at you, and keep the first walks short; a forest trail is a lot of smells for a puppy that has only known a yard.

What do we do about the deer?

Show the puppy deer early and on a leash, at a distance where it can stay calm, and pay it for turning back to you. A puppy that learns deer are boring at ten weeks is a dog that can walk the greenbelt at dusk at two years. Chasing is the habit to prevent, and it is far easier to prevent in the bundle than to fix later in a stay.

Do you really come out to Kingwood for four separate sessions?

Yes. The in-home bundle covers Kingwood, Atascocita, Humble and the Lake Houston communities at $750 for the four visits. Our trainer schedules them about a week apart, usually in the same time slot so the puppy's routine holds. The drive is ours to make, and it means the trainer sees your crate, your yard and your trailhead.

Is the crate really necessary in a house with a fenced yard?

Yes, and in Kingwood for a second reason: hurricane season runs June through November, and a dog that is calm in a crate is a dog you can evacuate or shelter without a fight. The bundle sets the crate up on day one as the puppy's bedroom, not a punishment, and the potty routine runs through it.
