Dog training in the Galleria area: high-rise and townhome dogs around Uptown

A Galleria dog lives in an elevator building or a townhome, relieves itself on a parking-garage dog run, walks the Post Oak sidewalks past valets and crowds, and spends Sunday on the Buffalo Bayou trails or at Memorial Park. Calm in a crowd is not optional here. It is the whole job.

Galleria dogs

The elevator dog: calm from the front door to the dog run and back.

The dog we meet from the Galleria high-rises has a routine that would exhaust most dogs: out the apartment door, down a hallway, into an elevator with strangers, through a lobby, past a valet stand and onto a sidewalk full of people, four times a day. A dog that barks in the elevator, drags through the lobby or lunges at the doorman's shoes makes every one of those trips a negotiation.

Townhome dogs around Uptown have a similar list: a garage, a narrow street, a patio next to the neighbor's patio, and a walk that passes fifty people before it reaches grass. A stay gives both dogs the same core, place, a structured walk, door boundaries and impulse control, and then proofs it in stores, on sidewalks and in crowds, which is the part a busy owner cannot easily do alone.

Where we train near you

Memorial Park, the bayou trails, Post Oak and Highland Village.

Memorial Park is the big one for a Galleria dog: runners, cyclists, strollers and other dogs on every path, and it is where a heel gets proven. The Buffalo Bayou trails add distance and the occasional cyclist at speed. The park is a City of Houston site and the bayou trails are cared for by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, and their sites carry the current rules on leashes and access.

The Post Oak and Uptown Park sidewalks are the crowd test, and the Highland Village stores are the indoor one, with automatic doors, carts and people who want to pet a dog. During the stay, Platinum and VIP field trips use the equivalent places near Cypress. When we come to your building for the in-home lesson or follow-ups, we use your elevator, your lobby, your dog run and your sidewalk. From May to September the sidewalk work happens early and late; a hand on the pavement tells us whether it is safe at all.

  • Distance work on the Buffalo Bayou trails
  • A sit at a Highland Village storefront while people pass

How it works from the Galleria

Pickup at the valet stand, or a drive out 610 and 290.

The Galleria area is about 35 to 40 minutes from the training home outside rush hour, 610 north to 290 and west toward Fry Road. The $250 transportation service is popular here because it removes the logistics: we meet you at the lobby or the valet stand, take the dog, and at the end of the program we bring it back and run the first lesson in your building, elevator included. With VIP the transport and the in-home handover are part of the price.

Drop-off families make the drive out 290 and hold the go-home session at the training home in Cypress on the final day. In between, the dog lives in a house with a small group of dogs, not a kennel, trains all day and goes on field trips, and appears in your photo and video updates every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Lessons in your building

In-home lessons in the Galleria area are $220, and the elevator is lesson one.

A private lesson at your high-rise or townhome is $220 a session, or $160 if you bring the dog to Cypress. In a building, lesson one is always the route: the door, the hallway, the elevator, the lobby, the dog run and the sidewalk, in that order, with a rule at each one. Lessons also handle a single problem, or the follow-up after a stay, and the six-week VIP includes unlimited in-home lessons.

For a puppy under four months, the Puppy Development Bundle is four private sessions of 45 to 60 minutes, $750 in your building or $550 in Cypress. A high-rise puppy learns the elevator before it learns to fear it, the garage dog run as a potty spot, crate calm for the hours you are out, and a greeting that does not involve the doorman's knees.

1

The door: sit and wait until released, every time

2

The hallway: a loose leash, no sniffing every threshold

3

The elevator: a sit in the corner, facing you, quiet with strangers

4

The lobby and the valet stand: heel past people without a greeting

5

The dog run: potty on cue, then back inside the same calm way

Programs and prices

Published prices; Galleria families mostly book Platinum with transport.

Gold is two weeks for $2,500 and covers sit and stay, place, loose leash, doors, jumping and impulse control, with one extra lesson. Platinum is three weeks for $3,750, our most popular program, and adds a structured heel, down and stay, behavior modification, public field trips and unlimited private lessons afterward, which is why it suits a crowd-shy or crowd-crazy dog. VIP, six weeks for $10,000, is the off-leash program, with the e-collar, the transport and the handover in your building all included. Silver is one week for $1,500.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Do you pick up from a high-rise in the Galleria area?

Yes. The $250 transportation service meets you at your lobby or valet stand, brings your dog to the training home, returns it at the end of the program and includes the first lesson in your building. VIP includes the service. Tell our team the building's rules on the free call so we can plan the handoff.

My dog barks in the elevator. Can that be fixed?

Yes. Elevator barking is usually excitement or nerves in a small space with strangers, and it responds to structure: a sit in the corner facing you, quiet rewarded, and a lot of calm repetitions. A stay builds the calm, and the in-home lesson rehearses your actual elevator with your actual neighbors.

Is a parking-garage dog run enough exercise?

No, and it was never meant to be. It is a potty spot. A Galleria dog still needs a structured walk on the sidewalk and, a few times a week, real distance at Memorial Park or on the bayou trails. Training makes those walks possible; it does not replace them.

How long is the drive from the Galleria to Cypress?

About 35 to 40 minutes outside rush hour, 610 north to 290 and out to Fry Road. It is a manageable drop-off, and it is also exactly the drive most Galleria families hand to us with the $250 pickup, which comes with the in-home first lesson in your building.

Which program for a townhome dog that lunges at other dogs on the sidewalk?

Platinum. Sidewalk reactivity needs behavior modification, field trips past real dogs and people, and unlimited lessons afterward so you learn the handling on your own block. Gold is the manners program; it helps, but a dog that lunges needs the three-week version and the follow-up that comes with it.
