Cane Island, Katy
Dog training in Cane Island: new construction, new puppies and a lot of first-time owners
Cane Island is new construction in Katy, off I-10, with its own trails, an amenity center and small fenced yards behind builder HOA rules. The house is new, the street is new and very often the owner is new too: nobody in the family has trained a dog before. That changes what we teach, because the person holding the leash needs as much coaching as the puppy.

Puppies and lessons in Cane Island
For a first-time owner, the first booking is usually a lesson, not a stay.
When nobody in the house has raised a dog, the most useful thing we can do is teach the people. The Puppy Development Bundle is four sessions of 45 to 60 minutes for a puppy under four months, $750 in your Cane Island home or $550 at the training home in Cypress. It covers sit, place, stay, recall, crate and potty routines, socialization and the prevention of nipping and jumping, and each session ends with family homework.
For an older dog, private lessons are $220 at your house or $160 in Cypress. A first-time owner with an adolescent dog usually needs four to six of them, a week or two apart, starting with the leash and the front door. If the dog is past the point where weekly coaching can keep up, a stay does the heavy lifting and the lessons after it teach you to keep the result. Platinum and VIP include unlimited follow-up lessons.
- Puppy bundle: four sessions, $750 at home or $550 in Cypress
- In-home lessons in Cane Island, $220 each
- Lessons at the training home, $160
- Homework written for every person in the house
Cane Island dogs
What goes wrong when the dog and the owner are both new.
The patterns are predictable, and none of them mean you picked the wrong dog. The puppy never learned the crate, so it cries all night and chews the baseboards by day. It was carried everywhere, so the trash truck terrifies it. It learned that jumping earns attention, that the leash means tug of war and that the new fence is the place to bark at the construction crews next door. By nine months it weighs fifty pounds and all of it is habit.
Gold, two weeks, resets the adolescent: place, a loose leash, door boundaries, no jumping, impulse control and a crate the dog accepts. Platinum, three weeks, is for the dog that has turned fearful or reactive, with behavior modification, field trips into stores and parks, and unlimited lessons so a first-time owner is never left guessing. This is the order we walk new owners through on the call.
The first week home: crate, a potty schedule and a quiet routine
Under four months: the Puppy Development Bundle
Four to eight months: daily leash and place practice, with a lesson when it slips
Adolescence: a Gold stay if pulling, jumping and barking take over
Any sign of fear or reactivity: Platinum, then lessons at home
How it works from Cane Island
Thirty-five minutes by I-10 and 99, with a pickup when the calendar is tight.
The training home is our trainer's house in Cypress, off 290 near Fry Road. From Cane Island it is about 35 minutes outside rush hour: east on I-10 to the Grand Parkway and north to 290. Families who want to meet the trainer and see where the dog will sleep drop off in person and come back for the go-home session. Families juggling new jobs and school pickups often take the $250 transport, which covers both trips and includes the first lesson at home.
During the stay your dog lives indoors with a small number of other dogs and learns the rhythm of a calm house: crate, meals, training, walks and rest. As the weeks go on it visits stores, sidewalks, parks and the lake. You receive photos and video on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which gives a first-time owner a clear picture of what good behavior looks like before taking the leash back.
- About 35 minutes from Cane Island outside rush hour
- $250 pickup and return, first lesson in your home

Where we train near you
Cane Island's trails, the Katy Mills stores and Mary Jo Peckham Park.
Follow-up lessons start close to home. Cane Island's trails and the paths around the amenity center give a young dog strollers, bikes, kids and other new dogs to walk past politely. The stores around Katy Mills are our neutrality classroom: carts, automatic doors and strangers who want to pet the puppy. Mary Jo Peckham Park in Katy, a Harris County Precinct 3 park, gives us room for longer walks and a long-line recall; the precinct's site lists its current rules.
New subdivisions come with fresh sod and fresh fire ant mounds, retention ponds that can hold an alligator, and a steady stream of trucks. Ask your vet when your puppy can safely walk on public ground; until then, early socialization happens from your arms, a cart or the car. From May to September outdoor sessions run early and late, and mosquitoes make a heartworm preventive from your vet a year-round habit.
- Community trails for the walk past strollers and bikes
- Katy Mills area stores for neutrality
- Mary Jo Peckham Park for a long-line recall
- Retention ponds on a leash only

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Is Cane Island in Katy?
Yes. Cane Island is a master-planned community in Katy, off I-10, with its own trails and amenity center. The training home in Cypress is about 35 minutes away outside rush hour via I-10 and the Grand Parkway, so both drop-off and the $250 pickup are realistic for Cane Island families.
We have never owned a dog. Where do we start?
Start with the free phone consultation. For a puppy under four months we usually recommend the Puppy Development Bundle at your house, because it teaches the family as much as the puppy. For an older dog, a few in-home lessons at $220 set up the crate, the leash and the door, and our team will say if a stay would serve you better.
Is our puppy too young for board and train?
A puppy under four months is usually better served by the bundle at home, where the crate and potty routines have to work anyway. Board and train fits an older puppy or an adolescent. Our team talks through age, vaccines and temperament on the call and recommends the timing that suits your dog.
Our puppy cries in the crate every night. Can you help?
Yes. Crate crying is one of the most common first-time-owner problems, and the fix is a routine: where the crate sits, when the puppy goes in, what happens before bed and how you respond to noise. The first bundle session covers it, and most families see real progress within the first week of following the plan.
Do you pick up in Cane Island?
Yes. The $250 transportation service collects your dog at your door in Cane Island, returns it at the end of the program and includes the first lesson in your home. VIP includes the transport. Families who prefer to drive can drop off in Cypress and finish with the go-home session at our house.
