In-home lessons in Bridgeland

In-home dog training in Bridgeland: the trails outside your door, with our trainer

Bridgeland is new construction, young families, a golden or a doodle in most houses and a trail that starts at the end of your driveway. That is the best possible place to raise a calm dog and the easiest place to raise a puller, and a lesson at your house decides which one you get.

At your house

A Bridgeland lesson starts at the driveway, because the trail starts there too.

Our trainer spends the first ten minutes inside with the dog loose, watching it move through the house and listening to you. Then we go to the driveway, because in Bridgeland the trail is right there and the dog has learned that the front door means a sprint to it. A sit at the door, a calm exit and a loose leash to the end of the drive are the first three pieces.

From the driveway we go onto the trail for as far as the dog stays calm, with strollers, bikes and the neighbors' retrievers as the live distraction, our trainer on the leash first and you after. If your section is on Josey Lake, the boardwalk and the water's edge come next, on a long line. We finish inside with a place on a bed and a plan on paper: three short sessions a day, the door first, then the trail.

1

Ten minutes inside: the dog loose in the entry, your list.

2

The front door: a sit, then a calm exit, then the driveway.

3

The trail from the end of your drive, our trainer on the leash first.

4

The boardwalk and the lake edge on a long line, if you live on the water.

5

A place on a bed inside while the household carries on.

What we see

New house, new trail, new neighbors: the three things Bridgeland dogs get wrong.

The trail is first. When the walk starts at the driveway, the dog never learns a calm exit, and a golden that has bolted for the trail every morning since it was a puppy pulls the whole way. The second is the house itself: a two-story entry and an open plan carry sound, and a doodle that barks at the window at every passing walker is heard three houses down and reported to the HOA.

The third is the lake. Josey Lake and the boardwalks are full of retrievers, ducks and kids, and a dog with no recall at the water's edge goes in, and any lake edge in the Houston area can hold an alligator in the warm months. Young families add a fourth: a first puppy in a first house, with every neighbor's dog wanting to say hello.

  • Bolting for the trail at the front door every morning
  • Window barking that carries through a new build and to the HOA
  • No recall at the Josey Lake edge
  • A first puppy overwhelmed by a friendly street

Your home or ours

Ten minutes from the training home: lessons at your house or ours, and what each costs.

Both lesson addresses are close to Bridgeland. At your house the lesson is $220 and uses your actual door, driveway and trail. At our training home it is $160, ten minutes away, on a street the dog has no habits on, and Bridgeland families often alternate. A puppy under four months takes the Puppy Development Bundle: four sessions of 45 to 60 minutes, $750 at your house or $550 at ours.

There is no package price on lessons; you book one at a time and most families take four to six. The $250 transport is a board and train service and is rarely needed this close; it is part of VIP and includes the first lesson at your house.

Lessons or a stay

The stay is an easy call from Bridgeland because the drop-off is ten minutes.

Lessons fit a dog that already knows a few things and a family that can practice daily, and they fix the door, the trail pull and the lake recall. They do not fit a dog that lunges at other dogs on the boardwalk with intent, that has bitten or that panics alone, because those need controlled exposure every day. That dog does better in Gold, two weeks for $2,500, or Platinum, three weeks for $3,750 with behavior modification, field trips and unlimited private lessons afterwards, on your own trail.

The logistics are nothing: drop off on the way to 290, pick up two or three weeks later, do the go-home session at the training home and take the follow-up lessons at your house. Which path fits is settled on the free consultation call.

  • Lessons: the door, the trail pull, the lake recall, a first puppy
  • Gold, two weeks, $2,500: the foundation plus a go-home session and one more lesson
  • Platinum, three weeks, $3,750: behavior modification, field trips, unlimited lessons after
  • Drop-off from Bridgeland in about ten minutes

Around Bridgeland

Josey Lake, the boardwalks and Bridgeland Central after the block.

When the door and the driveway hold, the lesson goes where our board and train dogs already go: the Josey Lake trails and boardwalks for a loose leash past strollers and a long-line recall at the water, the Bridgeland Central patios for the settle with food and foot traffic, and the pet and hardware stores on Fry Road and 290 for carts, doors and strangers. Bill Archer Bark Park is a short drive east when the dog is ready.

From May through September lessons run early or after six, because the boardwalks and the pavement fail the hand test by nine, and the store aisles carry the afternoon. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and the July 4 fireworks are close in a lakeside community, so crate calm goes into a lesson before either if your dog needs it.

  • Josey Lake trails and boardwalks for the walk and the water recall
  • Bridgeland Central patios for the settle
  • The Fry Road and 290 stores for carts and doors
  • Bill Archer Bark Park when the dog is ready

The programs

Two lesson addresses, one bundle, and the stay ten minutes away.

Bridgeland families take lessons at home for $220 or at the training home for $160, the puppy bundle for a dog under four months, and Gold or Platinum in Cypress when the dog needs the foundation.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Can the lesson happen on the trail instead of in the house?

Part of it does, once the door and the driveway are calm. A first lesson on a busy Josey Lake evening is an exam, not a classroom, so we start at your door and earn the trail during the same hour if the dog is ready. In summer, trail work is early morning before the heat and the crowd.

We just moved in and the puppy is overwhelmed. Where do we start?

With the Puppy Development Bundle if the puppy is under four months: four sessions covering sit, place, stay, recall, crate and potty guidance, socialization, and nipping and jumping prevention, $750 at your house or $550 at ours. Older than that, a single lesson at your house for the door and the trail is the right first step.

Should we take lessons at your home instead, since it is so close?

For the walk, yes, it is a good option: $160, ten minutes away, and a street the dog has no history on. For the front door, the driveway exit and the window barking, the lesson belongs at your house because those problems live there. Many Bridgeland families do one of each.

Our doodle barks at the window and the HOA has noticed. How fast can a lesson help?

The first lesson changes the setup: a place bed away from the window, a way to interrupt the barking the dog respects, and a routine that leaves the dog tired by mid-morning. The barking drops within days if the household applies the plan; holding it takes two or three more weeks.
