In-home dog training in Bellaire: private lessons at your house, $220

Bellaire is its own city inside Houston, with sidewalks on every block, Evelyn's Park in the middle and a pool behind a lot of the houses, and Meyerland adds ranch houses with big yards and a bayou that floods. Its dogs are family dogs with a walk problem and a water problem, and both are taught best at the house where they happen.

At your house

A Bellaire lesson moves from the front door to the pool gate to the sidewalk.

The first fifteen minutes are a tour. Our trainer walks the house with the dog loose, looks at the front door and the route to it, the backyard and the pool fence, the crate if there is one, and the spot where the dog watches the street. You describe the worst moments of the last month, and by the end of the tour the trainer has the order of work: usually the door first, then the yard, then the walk.

Each exercise runs the same way. Our trainer handles the dog through the first repetitions so you see the mechanics, then you handle the dog while the trainer coaches from beside you. A rescue that shrinks from strangers gets a slower, quieter version of the same lesson, with distance and food doing most of the work. Pool work uses a long line: a wait at the edge, a release into the water, and a recall out of it, practiced at your own pool where the party will happen.

You finish with written homework. In Bellaire that usually means a place command practiced during dinner, a sit at the pool gate every time it opens, and a specific route for the morning walk that avoids the two dogs your dog cannot yet pass.

1

The tour: front door, backyard, pool fence, crate and the window the dog barks from.

2

Door rule: a sit or a place before the door opens, with a family member playing the guest.

3

Pool rule on a long line: wait at the edge, release, and a recall out of the water.

4

The sidewalk: your block on a loose leash, then a pass by a neighbor's dog at a distance the dog can hold.

5

Homework: place during dinner, the gate sit, the morning route, and the date of lesson two.

What we see

Bellaire and Meyerland dogs bring us the walk, the water and the holidays.

The Lab or golden that hauls its owner toward every dog on a Bellaire sidewalk is the most common call, and second is the rescue that does the opposite, freezing or bolting from strangers on the same block. In the backyard the pool creates its own problem: a dog that launches in at the sound of a splash and cannot be called out, which is funny in June and dangerous when a toddler is in the water. December brings the door, when thirty people come through it and the dog greets each one with its whole body.

Meyerland's ranch houses add big yards that let a dog live outside and skip the walk, and a bayou that floods badly enough that a crate-calm dog is a safety matter. We teach crate calm in a lesson when a family asks, because loading a panicking dog into a car at midnight in a storm is not the time to start.

Lessons or a stay

Manners are a lesson job; fear and reactivity are a stay job.

For the puller, the pool dog and the holiday greeter, four to six lessons at $220 do the work when the family follows the homework. For the fearful rescue or the dog that has started lunging at dogs on the sidewalk, daily structure matters more than weekly coaching, and that means a stay in our Cypress home: Gold at $2,500 for two weeks for the manners set, or Platinum at $3,750 for three weeks with behavior modification and unlimited lessons afterwards. Bellaire families who take a stay usually add the $250 transport so the go-home session happens at their own pool gate.

Our team makes the call on the free phone consultation, and they will say when the cheaper route is the right one. Lessons are also the follow-up after every stay, which is when the pool gate and the holiday door get proofed at your house.

Around Bellaire

Evelyn's Park, Brays Bayou and Meyerland Plaza are the next three classrooms.

Once the block is calm the lesson goes to Evelyn's Park and Bellaire Town Square for loose-leash work around families and strollers, then to the Brays Bayou trail for a long-line recall, and to the Meyerland Plaza stores for calm around carts and automatic doors. The patios along Bellaire Boulevard are the last stop, where a place command on a mat under the table earns the dog a seat at dinner.

Brays Bayou is a flood channel, and Meyerland families know what a heavy rain does to it; check the bayou and the forecast before a trail lesson in storm season, which runs June 1 to November 30. In summer the trail is unshaded and lessons there happen before nine or after seven, with the store aisles taking the afternoon.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Can a lesson teach my dog to stay out of the pool?

Yes. The pool rule is a wait at the edge and a recall out of the water, taught on a long line at your own pool so the dog learns it where it will be tested. It usually takes two or three lessons plus daily practice, and it holds best when every adult in the house uses the same release word and the same recall.

Do you cover Meyerland and Braeswood as well as Bellaire?

Yes. In-home lessons at $220 cover Bellaire, Meyerland, Braeswood, Southside Place and West U. The drive to our Cypress training home is about 35 to 45 minutes via 610 and 290 outside rush hour, and families who prefer to come to us pay $160 a lesson there.

My rescue is terrified of people on the sidewalk. Will lessons help?

A lesson will help you manage it and start the confidence work, but a fearful dog needs slow, daily exposure at a distance it can tolerate, and weekly visits cannot supply that. Our team usually recommends a three-week Platinum stay for fear, with the unlimited lessons afterwards doing the sidewalk work at your house.

How many lessons before the holiday door is fixed?

For a dog that already knows sit and has some leash manners, the door rule is usually solid after two lessons and two weeks of practice with family members playing the guest. Book in October if you want it holding by Thanksgiving. A dog with no foundation at all takes longer, and a Gold stay may be the faster route.
