Dachshund training in Houston: big bark, stubborn streak, back safety
Dachshunds are hounds first and lap dogs second, and the families who call us have usually figured that out the hard way. This page covers what the breed is like at eight to eighteen months, how our Cypress stay handles a dog that argues, and the back-safety rules our trainers never break.

The breed
A dachshund is a scent hound with a badger's worth of nerve, and it trains like one.
The dachshund comes in two sizes, standard and miniature, and three coats, smooth, wirehaired and longhaired, and all six versions share the same job description: a scent hound built to follow a badger underground and fight it there. That takes courage, independence and a voice that carries. The AKC calls the breed clever, curious and spunky, and it will do what it wants unless you give it a reason not to.
Between eight and eighteen months the puppy quirks harden. The bark at the window becomes a full alarm at every passing dog and delivery driver. The dog that squirmed when picked up now growls or snaps, because being lifted has never been made pleasant. House training stalls, partly because a dachshund in the rain will hold it all day rather than get wet. Recall does not exist; a nose on a scent trail cannot hear you.
- Bred to hunt badgers underground: bold, loud and independent
- Window barking and delivery-driver alarms peak in adolescence
- Snapping when lifted is common and fixable
- Recall fails because the nose wins

The stay
How a dachshund's stay works, with the back protected at every step.
A dachshund's stay in our Cypress home starts with a clear structure and a very careful floor plan. The place bed is on the ground, the crate is on the ground and nothing the dog is asked to do involves a jump. Ramps go in where a couch or a bed is part of the picture. Meals are earned with a sit, doors are waited at, and the window gets covered for the first week so the alarm habit has nothing to practice on.
Being picked up is taught like any other skill: a cue, a hand under the chest and rear together, a reward, and a set-down before the dog wriggles. Recall is built on a long line in the yard and then on the trails. Photo and video updates arrive every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and the go-home session covers the lift, the window and the yard rules.
Place and crate on the floor, ramps wherever furniture is involved, no jumping at any point in the stay.
Earned meals and door waits so the dog stops running the house.
A quiet command at the window, taught before the barking starts rather than after.
A lift cue with full support under chest and rear, rewarded, so being picked up is safe and predictable.
Recall on a long line in the yard, then at Bill Archer Bark Park early in the morning when it is quiet.
Loose leash walking with sniff time on a release word, on Cypress sidewalks and store aisles.
The go-home session where you practice the lift, the window and the yard routine yourself.
Houston
Houston specifics for a dachshund: a belly near the pavement, fire ants, and a window on the street.
A dachshund is low to the ground, which puts its belly inches from summer pavement. From May through September our outdoor work with the breed runs at dawn and after dark, and the back-of-the-hand pavement test decides whether a walk happens at all. The smooth coat handles Houston heat better than most, but a longhaired dachshund needs the same schedule as a spaniel. Fire ant mounds are a real hazard for a dog that digs, so yards get checked before yard sessions.
Housing shapes the plan. A dachshund in a Montrose bungalow with a front window on a busy sidewalk needs the alarm habit addressed first. A dachshund on acreage in Tomball or Hockley needs a recall that beats a rabbit and a fence it cannot dig under. Stairs in a townhome are a back problem as well as a training one, and we talk about gates and ramps on the free consultation. July 4 fireworks and storm season set off a lot of dachshunds, so the crate is built as a refuge early.
- Dawn and after-dark sessions from May through September
- Fire ant mounds checked before any digging dog goes in a yard
- Window-front bungalows and acreage lots get different plans
- Ramps and gates for stairs and furniture, discussed on the free call
Program and price
Gold at $2,500 for most dachshunds, Platinum at $3,750 for the one that snaps, a $220 lesson for house training.
The two-week Gold Board & Train is $2,500 and it fits most dachshunds: place/stay, loose leash walking, door boundaries, impulse control and the window rule, with a go-home session, one more lesson and lifelong support. Book the three-week Platinum at $3,750 if your dachshund has snapped at a person, lunges at dogs on leash or guards the couch, because those need behavior modification and public field trips.
House training on its own is often an in-home lesson case at $220, because the fix is the schedule and the yard, and those are at your house. A dachshund puppy under four months belongs in the Puppy Development Bundle, $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home, where potty, crate and the lift are taught before the stubborn streak has a vote. Door-to-door transport is $250 and includes the first lesson in your home.
| Program | Length | Price | The dachshund it fits |

| Platinum Board & Train | 3 weeks | $3,750 | Snapping when lifted, leash lunging, couch guarding |

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
How much does dachshund training cost in Houston?
At Best Dog University a dachshund's board and train is $2,500 for the two-week Gold program or $3,750 for the three-week Platinum. Gold fits the barking, pulling and stubborn cases; Platinum is for snapping and lunging. An in-home lesson for house training is $220, a Cypress lesson is $160, and the puppy bundle is $550 or $750.
How do you protect a dachshund's back during training?
Nothing in the stay asks the dog to jump. Place beds and crates sit on the floor, ramps replace any step onto furniture, and the lift is taught with full support under the chest and hindquarters. Our trainers are strict about this with every dachshund, and the go-home session shows your family how to lift, carry and set down the dog the same way.
Can a dachshund learn to stop barking at the window?
Yes. The habit is interrupted early by covering the window for the first days, then a quiet cue is taught and rewarded before the dog gets going, and the dog earns the window back in stages. A dachshund will always announce a visitor; the goal is one or two barks and a settle on place, not a ten-minute alarm.
Will my dachshund ever have a reliable recall?
Reliable enough for a yard and a quiet park, yes. A dachshund on a fresh scent trail is still a hound, so we teach recall on a long line, reward it heavily and are honest about where it holds. Off-leash on open acreage near a road is not a realistic promise for this breed, and we would tell you that on the call.
Is Gold long enough for a dachshund that snaps when picked up?
Usually not. A snap is a fear or pain response and it needs the behavior modification and slower pace of the three-week Platinum stay, which also gives us time to rule out handling problems from the back. If the snapping is new, a vet visit comes first. Platinum's unlimited private lessons afterward keep the lift routine consistent at home.
