Cavalier King Charles spaniel training in Houston: velcro dogs, separation and the front door
Cavaliers are the sweetest dogs we board, and the sweetness is the problem. A dog that has spent fourteen months glued to a person has never learned to be a dog by itself. This page explains what that looks like at the door, in the crate and on a Houston sidewalk, and how our Cypress stay fixes it.

The breed
A Cavalier is a toy spaniel built for company, and that shapes everything about training it.
The Cavalier King Charles spaniel is a toy spaniel, bred in England as a companion for people who wanted a small, silky-coated dog on the sofa and nowhere else. The AKC describes the breed as affectionate, gentle and graceful, and every one of those words is true. A Cavalier reads faces, follows you from room to room and would rather lie against your leg than do anything else on earth. That is the temperament. It is also the reason the breed struggles with the two things a modern Houston household needs most: time alone and a calm front door.
The usual call comes between eight and eighteen months. The puppy that slept in a crate now screams in it. The dog that waited in the kitchen now bolts through the door the second it opens, because the person leaving is the worst thing that can happen. Some Cavaliers add a fear layer: trembling at the vet, freezing on a busy sidewalk, refusing to walk past a barking neighbor. None of this is stubbornness. It is a very soft dog with no structure, and soft dogs need clearer rules, not harsher ones.
- Bred as a lap companion, so alone time is the hardest skill
- Soft, sensitive and quick to shut down under pressure
- Door bolting and crate panic peak between eight and eighteen months
- Fear of the vet, the sidewalk and loud neighbors is common
The stay
How a Cavalier's stay runs: alone time first, then the door, then the walk.
A Cavalier's stay in our Cypress home starts with the crate and the place bed, because everything else depends on the dog being able to settle without a lap. Our trainers use balanced training, which for a Cavalier means the pressure is light, the boundaries are consistent and the praise is real. Pushing a Cavalier hard produces a dog that folds; giving it a rule it can keep produces a dog that relaxes.
You see the progress in the photo and video updates that go out Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The middle of the stay adds the door, the walk and short absences that grow by the day. The last part is the go-home session, where you learn exactly how to leave the house and come back without a production.
Crate calm at meals and bedtime, with the door open first and closed later.
Place with duration while a person walks out of the room and returns.
Door boundaries: sit, wait, release, at every threshold in the house.
Short absences timed and extended daily, so leaving stops being an event.
Loose leash walking on quiet Cypress streets, then past joggers and other dogs.
Field trips into the pet and hardware stores along 290, to practice calm around strangers.

Houston
Houston asks a Cavalier to handle heat, fireworks and a front door that never stops.
A Cavalier's silky coat and short muzzle mean it overheats faster than its size suggests. From May through September our outdoor work with the breed happens early in the morning and after sunset, and we press the back of a hand to the pavement before any sidewalk session. The AVMA's guidance on pets and heat is what we follow. Midday belongs to the air-conditioned aisles of the stores on Fry Road and to place work at home.
Housing matters too. A Cavalier in a Heights townhome learns to pass strangers in a stairwell; a Cavalier in Bridgeland learns that the delivery driver is not a reason to scream at the glass. July 4 and New Year's Eve fireworks upset a lot of Cavaliers, and hurricane season, June 1 through November 30, brings the kind of long indoor stretches that expose a dog with no off switch. We build the crate to be a refuge before any of that arrives.
- Outdoor sessions at dawn and dusk from May to September
- Pavement test before every sidewalk walk
- Fireworks on July 4 and New Year's Eve need a crate the dog already trusts
- Townhome stairwells and suburban front windows get their own plan
Program and price
Gold at $2,500 for manners, Platinum at $3,750 when the dog cannot be left.
The two-week Gold Board & Train is $2,500 and covers what most Cavaliers need: sit/stay, place/stay, loose leash walking, door boundaries and impulse control, with a go-home session, one more lesson afterward and lifelong support. If your Cavalier panics when you leave, howls through a closed door or shakes at the sight of a stranger, book the three-week Platinum at $3,750. It adds behavior modification, public field trips and unlimited private lessons, which separation anxiety needs.
A Cavalier puppy under four months is a Puppy Development Bundle case: four private sessions for $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home, covering crate, potty, recall and the beginnings of alone time. Private lessons run $160 at our Cypress facility or $220 in your home for a Cavalier that already has manners and needs a departure routine. Transportation is $250 door to door and comes with the first lesson at your house.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
How much does Cavalier King Charles spaniel training cost in Houston?
At Best Dog University a Cavalier's board and train is $2,500 for the two-week Gold program or $3,750 for the three-week Platinum. Most Cavaliers with door and crate problems fit Gold; Cavaliers with separation anxiety need Platinum. Puppies under four months take the $550 or $750 Puppy Development Bundle, and private lessons are $160 in Cypress or $220 in your home.
Can a Cavalier really learn to be alone?
Yes, and it is the most common thing we teach the breed. The stay builds absences in small, timed pieces on top of a crate and place bed the dog already trusts. Cavaliers rarely need to be alone for a full workday to succeed; they need to stop treating a closed door as a catastrophe. The go-home session hands you the exact routine.
Is balanced training too harsh for a soft dog like a Cavalier?
No. Balanced training means the right amount of pressure for the dog in front of us, and for a Cavalier that amount is small. Rules are held with consistency and timing, not force. A Cavalier that is corrected harshly shuts down, so our trainers keep sessions short, rewards frequent and the standard clear. Soft dogs do best with structure they can predict.
Will the Houston heat be a problem for a Cavalier during a summer stay?
It is managed, not avoided. Summer outdoor work runs at dawn and dusk, the pavement is tested before every walk and midday sessions move indoors to stores and the training home. A Cavalier's coat and short face make heat a real limit, so we follow the AVMA's guidance and stop well before heavy panting.
My Cavalier is scared of the vet and of strangers at the door. Which program?
Platinum. Fear is a behavior modification problem, and the three-week stay gives us time to build confidence through structure, then expose the dog to strangers, handling and public spaces at a pace it can hold. Field trips into stores and along Cypress sidewalks are part of it, and unlimited private lessons afterward keep the progress going at home.
