Board and train vs classes

Board and train vs group classes in Houston: what each can and cannot fix

We do not run group classes, so this is not a page about which of our products to buy. It is about whether a class will get you where you want to go, because for some Houston dogs it will, and sending those families to a class is cheaper for them and better for the dog.

Side by side

Side by side: an hour a week in a hall, or two to three weeks in a house.

A group class is typically six to eight weekly sessions in a store training area or a hall, with several dogs and owners and one instructor. You learn an exercise, practice it at home for a week and come back. The dog learns as fast as you practice, and the environment is fixed: same room, same dogs, same floor. It is good at manners on a dog who is already paying attention.

Board and train puts the dog in our trainer's home in Cypress for one to six weeks with daily training from our team, then hands him back at a go-home session where you learn what he knows. Gold at $2,500 is two weeks of household obedience; Platinum at $3,750 is three weeks with behavior modification and field trips into real stores and parks. The dog learns whether or not you had time this week.

When a class is right

When a group class is the right call, and we will say so on the phone.

A puppy between four and six months who has finished the Puppy Development Bundle, is friendly with other dogs and needs to practice sits and downs around distractions is a good class candidate. So is the steady adult who walks fine and needs polish, with an owner who enjoys the weekly homework. A class is also right when the goal is the owner's skill: some people want to learn to train, and a class teaches that.

A class is the right answer when money is tight and the problem is small. If the dog jumps on guests and nothing else, eight weeks of coached practice can fix it for less than a stay, provided you practice between sessions. Our team sends families to classes in that situation. What we will not do is send a reactive dog to a class, because a hall full of dogs is the one place he cannot learn.

  • A friendly puppy or steady adult with the basics already
  • One small problem and an owner who will practice daily
  • The dog can focus with other dogs twenty feet away

When a stay is right

When board and train is right: habits, reactivity and households without practice time.

Board and train is right when the behavior has years of practice behind it. Pulling a hundred pounds down a Bridgeland sidewalk, bolting through the gate, barking at every window: these are habits, and a habit takes daily interruption for two weeks to replace. An hour a week cannot deliver that many repetitions, and the six days between classes undo the one.

It is the only right answer for reactivity and aggression. A dog who lunges at other dogs cannot learn in a room full of them; he needs a calm baseline first and then graded exposure at a distance he can handle, which is what the three-week Platinum's behavior modification and field trips provide. And it is right for the family that has already dropped out of a class once. That is not a character flaw. It is information about which format fits.

  • Pulling, jumping or bolting that has become routine
  • Reactivity or aggression toward dogs or people
  • Two working parents and no practice minutes
  • An off-leash goal, which means Platinum or VIP

Cost

Cost: what a class saves, and what it costs when it does not work.

A class is cheaper per week, and we will not pretend otherwise. Class fees vary by provider, and we do not quote other businesses' prices. Our own stays are $1,500 for one week, $2,500 for two, $3,750 for three and $10,000 for six, with a $250 reservation deposit applied to the total and $250 door-to-door transportation that includes the first lesson at your home. Private lessons run $160 at the training home or $220 in yours.

The real cost is the season. A class that does not fix a pulling dog costs eight weeks and a course fee, and the dog is eight weeks better at pulling. A Gold stay that does fix it costs $2,500 and two weeks. Price the whole problem: if a class solves it, it is the better buy; if it will not, it is the most expensive option on the page.

  • Stays: $1,500, $2,500, $3,750 or $10,000, with the $250 deposit applied
  • Private lessons $160 in Cypress or $220 at home for a single household problem
  • Class fees vary; ask the provider and count the weeks

How to decide

How to decide in five questions.

Run through these before you book anything, and answer the second one honestly. Most Houston families know the answer by the third question. The ones who do not usually have a dog in the middle: friendly, distracted, a little too strong. For that dog the answer depends on the practice minutes more than on the dog, and from May to September those minutes have to happen at dawn or after dinner anyway.

1

Name the problem in one sentence. If it includes another dog, a sidewalk or the word lunges, a class is out.

2

Count the practice minutes you actually have. Under fifteen a day, a class will stall; a stay does the reps for you.

3

Check the age. Under four months, neither: the Puppy Development Bundle is private and built for that age.

4

Ask whether the dog can focus near other dogs. If not, a class hall is the wrong classroom.

5

Price the whole problem, not the first week. A class that fixes it wins; a class that does not is the dearest option.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Does Best Dog University offer group classes?

No. Our programs are board and train stays in our trainer's home in Cypress, private one-on-one lessons at $160 there or $220 in your home, and the Puppy Development Bundle for puppies under four months. When a group class is the better fit for a dog, our team says so on the free consultation rather than sell a stay.

Is board and train better than group classes for a puppy?

Under four months, neither. The Puppy Development Bundle, four private sessions for $550 in Cypress or $750 at home, fits that age. From four to six months a friendly puppy with the basics does well in a class for distraction practice. Once adolescence hits, around six months, habits arrive and a Gold stay becomes the shorter road.

Can a group class fix leash reactivity?

Almost never. A reactive dog is over threshold the moment he enters a room with six other dogs, and a dog over threshold cannot learn. Reactivity is trained at a distance the dog can handle and closed slowly, which is what Platinum's behavior modification does over three weeks, with unlimited lessons afterward to carry it onto your street.

Will my dog be socialized in a board and train, or only in a class?

Both, differently. A class puts the dog near other dogs in a fixed room. A stay puts him around a limited number of dogs in a house, on neighborhood streets and, in Platinum, in stores, parks and at the lake, learning to be neutral rather than to play. Neutrality in public is what most Houston families are actually asking for.

What if I take a class and it does not work?

Then you have learned something useful: the problem needs more repetitions than an hour a week provides. Tell our team what the class covered and where it stalled. Most of those dogs go into Gold at $2,500 or Platinum at $3,750, and the handling you learned in the class makes the go-home session easier.

Not sure a class will do it? Ask our team before you pay for either.

The free phone consultation is a direct call with our trainers. We will say class or stay plainly, and if it is a stay, a $250 reservation deposit holds the dates and is applied to the program.
