Board and train for first-time dog owners in Houston: what you get that a class cannot give
Most first-time owners who call us tried a class or a video series first and found that the dog learned the exercise and the family never learned the dog. That is not a failure of effort. It is two beginners trying to learn from each other.

Who this is for
Who a first board and train is for: three households our team hears from every week.
The family whose first puppy grew up. The puppy arrived in spring, the class was fun, and at ten months the dog drags the kids down a Bridgeland sidewalk and greets guests with both front paws. Nothing went wrong. The class exercises were never proofed against real life, and a first-time family does not know how to proof them. A stay does that part for you.
The couple who chose a rescue. A two-year-old shepherd mix from a Houston shelter, six weeks into the home, is starting to test the house, and neither owner has handled a dog before. Every piece of advice online contradicts the last. Two weeks of clear, consistent structure gives the dog rules and gives the couple one plan instead of five competing ones.
The single owner in a townhome. A first dog in a Heights or Midtown townhome means elevators, patios, parking garages and strangers, and learning leash pressure on a crowded sidewalk is learning in the hardest classroom in the city. Our trainers build the leash work in Cypress first and hand you a dog who already knows the answer before you have to ask.
- A first dog of any breed, roughly six months to six years old
- Owners who took a class and could not carry it into the house
- Puppies under four months belong in the Puppy Development Bundle, not a stay

Day by day
What the two weeks look like when the owner has never done this before.
Drop-off is at the training home in Cypress, off US-290, or our team collects the dog at your door for $250. First-time owners want to know what the house is like, so we say it plainly: it is our trainer's own home, not a kennel, with a limited number of dogs living in it at once. Your dog gets a crate, a routine and a handler who trains him every day.
Photos and video arrive on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and they matter more for a first-time owner than for anyone else. You are not only watching progress. You are watching how our trainers hold the leash, mark a behavior and release a stay, so that by the go-home session the handling already looks familiar. Families rewatch those videos for months.
Days 1 to 2: crate, routine and the first marker words, taught with food.
Days 3 to 5: sit/stay and place/stay in the yard and kitchen, plus structured walks on the quiet streets around the house.
Days 6 to 7: door boundaries at every exit, and the walk moves onto sidewalks with fence dogs and joggers.
Days 8 to 11: duration, distraction and impulse control while the house moves around him.
Days 12 to 13: a second handler takes the leash, and a full run-through goes on video.
Day 14: the go-home session, where you take the leash with our trainer beside you.
Price and inclusions
Gold is $2,500 for two weeks, and the handover is the part a first-time owner is really paying for.
The Gold Board & Train costs $2,500. That buys fourteen days of daily training in the house, the Monday, Wednesday and Friday updates, the go-home session, one additional private lesson after your dog has been home a while, and lifelong support by phone. For a first-time owner, that additional lesson is where two weeks of small mistakes get fixed in an hour.
A $250 reservation deposit holds your start date once the free consultation confirms the program, and it is applied toward the $2,500. Door-to-door transportation is $250 more and includes the first lesson in your home, which many first-time families choose because it puts the handover in the rooms where the rules will be enforced, at the real front door.
- $2,500 with no add-on charges for food, updates or the go-home session
- $250 deposit reserves the dates and counts toward the balance

Houston specifics
A first dog in Houston meets heat, storms and fire ants, so the stay trains for them.
First-time owners are often surprised by how much of dog ownership here is weather. From May to September our trainers walk before 8am and after 7pm, because pavement that fails the hand test burns pads, and a new owner has not yet learned to check. Your dog comes home used to that schedule, and the go-home session covers the hand test and the hot-weather rules the AVMA lays out.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and a first-time owner rarely has a pet plan in the kit; Ready Harris lists what belongs in it. Fireworks on July 4 and New Year's Eve catch new owners off guard too, and a dog who knows place and crate rides them out far better. Mosquito and heartworm pressure is year-round, so prevention should be current at drop-off.
- Central Houston to Cypress is about 30 to 45 minutes outside rush hour; Katy and Tomball 25 to 35
- Fire ant mounds along the esplanade are part of the sidewalk lesson
- A storm plan for every dog in the house from June through November
Which program fits
Which program a first-time owner actually needs, and when a shorter one will do.
Gold, at $2,500, is the honest default for a first dog with no serious behavior problem: it covers everything a household needs and includes the follow-up lesson a beginner should have. The Silver Foundation week at $1,500 fits when the dog is calm and the only goals are a loose leash and a closed front door, and our team will say so rather than sell the second week.
Platinum at $3,750 becomes the answer when the dog lunges at other dogs, growls at strangers or has frightened someone, because behavior modification, field trips and unlimited private lessons are Platinum inclusions. If your first dog is a puppy under four months, the Puppy Development Bundle of four private sessions, $550 in Cypress or $750 at home, is the right start.
- Silver, $1,500: a calm dog, a walk and a door
- Gold, $2,500: the first-dog default
- Platinum, $3,750: reactivity, aggression, public manners
The programs
Gold first, and the programs on either side of it.
Most first dogs fit Gold. A calm one fits Silver, a reactive one needs Platinum, and a young puppy starts with the bundle.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Is board and train a good idea for a first-time dog owner?
Yes, on one condition: you attend the go-home session and the additional lesson and practice what our trainers show you. A stay hands you a dog who already knows the commands, which removes the hardest part of learning to train. The daily consistency at home is still yours, and the handover teaches it.
What does a class give me that a stay does not?
Weeks of practice handling your own dog in front of an instructor, at a lower price, and for a steady dog with a patient owner that can be enough. What it cannot give you is a trainer working the dog every day or commands proofed against real Houston sidewalks, stores and front doors.
Will my dog listen to me, or only to your trainers?
To you, if you do the handover. Our trainers hand the leash to a second handler during the stay so the commands belong to the dog rather than to one person, and the go-home session walks you through each one until it works in your hands.
How much does board and train cost for a first-time owner in Houston?
The same as for anyone: $1,500 for the one-week Silver, $2,500 for the two-week Gold, $3,750 for the three-week Platinum, and most first dogs fit Gold. The $250 reservation deposit is credited against the program.
Should I take a class first and do a stay later?
If your dog is under four months, start with the Puppy Development Bundle, which is private lessons rather than a class, and come back for a stay when adolescence arrives. If the dog is older and already pulling or jumping, a class first tends to cost a season and change little.
