Why does my dog

Why does my dog ignore me outside?

The dog that sits beautifully in the living room and turns to stone on the sidewalk is the most common dog in Houston, and our trainers do not think it is being stubborn. It is doing the math, and the math is against you until the training changes it.

The short version

The cue was never taught outside, and the outside pays more.

A cue is not learned until it works in the places you need it, and most cues are taught in a kitchen with a treat and tested for the first time on a sidewalk with a squirrel. The dog is not ignoring you; it has never been asked that question in that room. On top of that, outdoors pays: the smell, the other dog, the jogger, all of it is more valuable than what you are offering, and the leash has spent months teaching the dog that pulling toward those things works. Engagement outside is built like any skill, in layers from easy to hard, with the dog paid heavily for looking at you in each new place before you ask for anything else.

  • The cue was taught in the kitchen and tested on the sidewalk
  • Outside pays more than you do
  • The leash has taught pulling toward the good things
  • Engagement is built in layers, easy to hard
  • Pay the check-in before you ask for anything

The reasoning

Proofing, pay and the poisoned recall.

Dogs do not generalize well: a sit in the kitchen and a sit at the park are different problems to a dog, and each new place has to be taught at a lower level than the last one was performed at. Pay is relative: a piece of kibble beats nothing in the kitchen and loses to a squirrel outdoors, so the pay outside has to be real, food the dog does not get elsewhere, or a game, or the freedom to go sniff on your word. And the recall is usually poisoned: it has been used to end walks, to put the dog in the crate, to catch it after it did something wrong, so it predicts loss. A recall that always predicts something good, and that never ends the fun without a second chance to run, is the one that works with a rabbit in view.

A structured walk changes the math from the other side. A dog with a job at your knee has less attention for the world, and a dog that has been paid for checking in on every walk starts doing it on its own.

  • Every new place starts a level lower
  • Pay outside has to beat the squirrel
  • A recall that ends fun is poisoned
  • A recall that predicts good things works
  • A walk with a job leaves less attention for the world

What it means for your dog

Puppies, adolescents and the dog with a year of ignoring behind it.

A puppy that ignores you outside is a puppy that has not been taught there yet, and the yard, then the driveway, then the quiet street, each paid heavily, build it in weeks. An adolescent is the worst case because the world is at its most interesting between six and eighteen months and the dog's confidence has outgrown its training; the leash and a long line come back, the distances shrink, and the check-in is paid like gold. An adult with a year of ignoring behind it has learned that your voice outside means nothing, and rebuilding it means a new recall word, real pay, a long line for months, and no off-leash time until the new word has a history.

  • Puppies: the yard, the driveway, the street, in weeks
  • Adolescents: the line back on, distances shorter, the check-in paid like gold
  • Adults with a history: a new word, real pay, a long line for months
  • No off-leash time until the new word has a history

The Houston factor

Squirrels, ducks, a dog behind every fence, and a heat that makes outside miserable anyway.

Houston's outside is loud: squirrels in every live oak, ducks and egrets at every retention pond, a dog behind every fence in the master-planned sections and a runner every thirty seconds on the loop, so the competition for a dog's attention is fierce and the layers have to be built patiently, from the yard to the store aisles along 290 to the Bridgeland paths at a quiet hour. Summer helps and hurts: a hot dog is a slow dog, so early-morning sessions get more attention, but a walk at noon in July is a dog that cannot think about anything but the pavement. The long line is the tool for all of it, and the recall around wildlife guide on this site covers the coyote and deer version.

1

Pick a new recall word if the old one is poisoned, and never use it to end fun

2

Pay the check-in: every time the dog looks at you outside, it gets something real

3

Start in the yard, then the driveway, then the quiet street, each a level easier than the last

4

A structured walk with a job at your knee

5

A long line in open ground for months, with the recall paid every time

6

Store aisles, then trails at quiet hours, then busy hours

7

Freedom earned in fenced places first, and never near a road until the word has a history

The program

Gold for the walk and the engagement, Platinum for the dog that lunges as well, VIP for real off-leash reliability.

A dog that ignores you outside and is otherwise sound is a Gold case, two weeks at $2,500: the structured walk, engagement and impulse control built in the training home and proofed on field trips in the stores and on the trails, with a go-home session on your own street. A dog that also lunges at the things it is ignoring you for is Platinum. Off-leash reliability, the recall that beats a rabbit, is a VIP program, six weeks at $10,000, with the Mini-Educator and the in-home handover included. The recall page and the leash pulling page describe the methods.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Why does my dog listen at home but not outside?

Because the cues were taught at home and never proofed outside, and because outside pays better than you do. Each new place has to be taught at an easier level than the last, with the dog paid heavily for checking in before anything else is asked.

Why does my dog not come when called outside?

Usually because the recall has been poisoned: used to end walks, to catch the dog after a mistake, or to put it in the crate, so it predicts loss. A new word that always predicts something good, paid on a long line for months, is the fix.

Should I use a shock collar to make my dog listen outside?

Not as a first step and never as a substitute for teaching. Reliability off leash is built on a long line over months, and the Mini-Educator is used in the VIP program on top of that foundation, at low levels, as a clear signal, never as a punishment for a dog that was never taught.

How long does it take to get a reliable recall?

Months of a long line and real pay for a dog that has a poisoned recall, weeks for a puppy started right. A recall that beats a squirrel or a deer is a six-week VIP project with practice for life. Nobody builds it in a weekend.
