Is there a minimum age for board and train?
Breeders and shelters send puppies home at eight weeks, and the first call to a trainer often comes that same week. Here is why a stay waits a couple of months, what to do in the meantime, and what changes at the other end of a dog's life.

The short version
Four to five months is the floor, and the reason is the puppy, not the calendar.
Before about four months a puppy needs things a live-in program is not built to give: several naps a day, sessions measured in minutes, bite inhibition practiced on his own family's hands, and a socialization plan run by the people he will live with. He is also midway through his vaccine series, which rules out the field trips that make a stay valuable. Put him in a house of adolescent dogs and he would be managed, not trained.
From four to five months the picture changes. The adult teeth are coming in, the attention span has stretched, the vaccines are usually done, and adolescence is around the corner with its pulling, testing and selective hearing. That is a puppy who can hold a day of structure and benefit from it, and it is where Silver at $1,500 for one week or Gold at $2,500 for two weeks begins to fit.
- Under 4 months: Puppy Development Bundle, four private sessions
- About 4 to 5 months: Silver or Gold become options
- 6 to 18 months: the age most dogs arrive, usually Gold or Platinum
- No upper limit: seniors get a softer, shorter version
The reasoning
The bundle exists so the first months are not wasted waiting.
The minimum age would be a problem if it meant doing nothing until the puppy grew. It does not. The Puppy Development Bundle is four private sessions of 45 to 60 minutes for puppies under four months, covering sit, place, stay and recall, crate and potty guidance, socialization, and nipping and jumping prevention. At $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home, it is the least expensive training the dog will ever get, and it makes any later stay shorter.
It also trains the right students. Potty accidents, crate crying and biting hands are household routines, and a puppy who learned them in our house would relearn them in yours. Four lessons with the family in the rooms where the routines run get more done than a fortnight away. That is not a sales line; it is why we send eight-week-old puppies home with a plan instead of a bed here.
- Crate, potty, name and handling in the first sessions
- Socialization by cart and carry until the vaccine series is done
- Nipping and jumping stopped before they become habits
For your dog
Where your dog is in life decides the program, from puppy to senior.
A five-month-old doodle from Fairfield who already had the bundle is a Silver or Gold puppy. An eight-month-old shepherd who has started barking at strangers on the sidewalk is a Platinum dog at $3,750, because the behavior modification matters more than the manners. A three-year-old rescue Lab is a Gold or Platinum dog depending on what he does, not how old he is.
At the top end there is no cutoff. A senior with stiff hips learns place, door manners and a loose leash in shorter sessions on softer surfaces, and a vet check comes first because pain in an old dog looks like stubbornness. Deaf or half-blind seniors train on hand signals and touch. Our team plans a senior's stay around the body, and private lessons at $160 or $220 are often the gentler route.
| Age | What fits | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks to 4 months | Puppy Development Bundle | $550 Cypress, $750 in-home |
| About 4 to 6 months | Silver or Gold | $1,500 or $2,500 |
| 6 months to 8 years | Gold or Platinum, by behavior | $2,500 or $3,750 |
| Seniors | Gold, Platinum or private lessons, adjusted | $2,500, $3,750, or $160 to $220 per lesson |
Houston reality
A spring puppy reaches stay age in midsummer, so the timeline is planned around heat and shots.
A puppy born in February comes home in April, does the bundle through May and reaches four to five months in July. That first stay runs on the summer schedule: outdoor work before eight and after seven, pavement tested by hand, midday sessions indoors and in the air-conditioned aisles on 290. Mosquitoes carry heartworm in every month here, so prevention begins at the first vet visit and the next dose date is on file for the stay.
Before the series is complete, socialization happens without ground contact: carried through a hardware store on Fry Road, in a cart at a pet store, on a lap on a bench at the Towne Lake boardwalk watching strollers and cyclists. July 4 lands in that window for spring puppies and is handled indoors with food. Ask your vet what is safe before the last shot, and work inside that answer.
8 to 10 weeks: bundle session one, crate, potty schedule, name, handling.
10 to 12 weeks: sit, place, recall in the house, first leash pressure in the yard.
12 to 16 weeks: duration on place, cart-and-carry outings, vaccine series finishing.
4 to 5 months: call for the free phone consultation about Silver or Gold.
5 to 8 months: first stay if it fits, or lessons if the puppy is doing well at home.
6 to 18 months: adolescence; Gold or Platinum if the testing gets ahead of you.
The programs
The bundle first, then Silver, Gold or Platinum by behavior.
The Puppy Development Bundle is four private sessions for puppies under four months, $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home. Silver is one week at $1,500 for a foundation or refresher. Gold runs two weeks at $2,500 and covers manners and obedience. Platinum runs three weeks at $3,750 with behavior modification and unlimited lessons. Which one fits at four to five months depends on the puppy in front of us, and the free phone consultation is where that is decided.
The programs
From the bundle to the first stay.
Four private sessions under four months, then Silver or Gold once a puppy can hold a full day of structure.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Can a 12-week-old puppy do board and train if he is very smart?
No. Intelligence is not the constraint; naps, vaccines, bite inhibition and the socialization window are. A bright twelve-week-old gets more from four bundle sessions with his family than from a stay in a house of adolescent dogs, and he arrives at four to five months ready for a shorter, cheaper program if one is needed at all.
Is 5 months too early for the Silver program?
Usually not, if the puppy had the bundle or has a solid crate, potty and name response at home. Silver at $1,500 builds loose leash walking, door boundaries and basic structure in a week, with a go-home session. If the puppy is already barking at dogs or strangers, skip Silver and talk to our team about Platinum.
Is there a maximum age for board and train?
No. Seniors learn place, doors and a loose leash readily; the program is adjusted for joints, stamina and hearing, with shorter sessions and softer surfaces. A vet check comes first, because pain reads as stubbornness. For a very old dog, private lessons at home at $220 are often kinder than a stay.
What if my puppy is 4 months but still has a vaccine to go?
Tell our team the schedule and ask your vet what is safe. A puppy a week or two short of his last shot can often start a stay with the field trips held until the series is done, or wait a fortnight and start with everything open. Either way the bundle sessions can begin immediately.
