Reactivity, priced honestly
How much is reactivity training?
Reactivity, the barking and lunging on leash at dogs, bikes or strangers, is one of the most common reasons Houston families call us. The price depends on whether the dog needs a plan or a program, and this page shows how we decide.

The short version
Platinum at $3,750 for most reactive dogs; lessons at $160 for the mild ones.
Reactivity is treated with behavior modification, and behavior modification lives in Platinum. Three weeks gives our trainers time to build obedience the dog can hold under pressure, then to stage dozens of controlled encounters with other dogs and people at increasing closeness, in the house, on Cypress sidewalks and on field trips. The program ends with a comprehensive go-home session and continues with unlimited lessons at our location.
A mildly reactive dog, one who barks at the window or stiffens at a passing dog but recovers quickly, can often be turned around with two or three lessons and a household that walks him correctly every day. Our team starts there when it fits, because $160 or $220 and a plan is a better first purchase than a stay a dog does not need.
- Platinum: 3 weeks, $3,750, about $179 per day
- Lessons: $160 Cypress, $220 in-home, for mild cases
- Gold: manners and pulling, not reactivity

The reasoning
Reactivity needs distance, timing and repetition, and a stay controls all three.
A reactive dog learns nothing when he is over threshold. The work happens at the distance where he notices the other dog but can still respond to a command, and that distance shrinks only through many calm repetitions. On a neighborhood walk in Towne Lake the other dog appears from around a corner at ten feet, which is the opposite of controlled. In our program the other dog is a calm client dog placed exactly where we want him.
That is why the price is a three-week program rather than an hourly rate. Our trainers can set up several controlled exposures a day, with the leash handling and timing right every time, while a working family in Katy might manage two uncontrolled ones a week. The Platinum price buys the setups, the daily repetitions and the lessons afterward that teach you to keep the distance rules.
The money
What $3,750 includes, and what it replaces.
Platinum includes everything in Gold, sit and stay, place, loose leash walking, door boundaries and impulse control, plus down-stay, a structured heel, the behavior modification itself, field trips and public exposure, a comprehensive handover, unlimited private lessons and lifetime support. Per day it works out to about $179, the same daily rate as Gold, with a third week and the follow-up lessons added.
Around the region, board and train programs start at roughly two thousand dollars for two weeks and rise with specialization, while hourly trainers commonly charge in the low hundreds per session. A reactivity case that takes a dozen hourly sessions costs about what Platinum does, without the daily repetitions or the included lessons. We price it this way because it is the honest shape of the work.
Houston specifics
Reactive dogs in Houston meet their triggers in predictable places, and that helps.
Field trips go where the triggers are: the entrance of a pet store on 290, a bench near the Towne Lake boardwalk, a sidewalk in Bridgeland at the hour the neighborhood walks its dogs. The trails at Josey Lake and the outside fence of Bill Archer Bark Park are useful in cooler months for dog-to-dog work at a distance we control. We do not take reactive dogs inside dog parks.
From May to September that work happens early and late, since heat lowers every dog's tolerance and pavement burns paws by mid-morning. In summer the midday sessions go indoors, where store aisles offer people and carts as triggers under air conditioning. Around July 4 and New Year we also prepare reactive dogs for fireworks, because noise sensitivity and leash reactivity often travel together.
- Store entrances and boardwalk benches for people triggers
- Josey Lake and park fence lines for dog triggers at distance
- Summer: early, late and indoor
- No reactive dogs inside dog parks
What it means for your dog
The right price depends on the age of the dog and the age of the habit.
A puppy under four months who barks at everything on the walk is not reactive yet, and the in-home puppy bundle at $750 usually fixes it through socialization done properly. An adolescent between six and eighteen months who has started lunging is the classic Platinum case, because the habit is new and the dog is still forming his view of the world.
An adult who has lunged at every dog for three years is also a Platinum case, with a longer runway after go-home day; the unlimited lessons matter most here. A dog whose reactivity has tipped into biting is an aggression case, priced the same but planned differently. Our team sorts this out on the free phone consultation before any money changes hands.

The programs
The reactivity program, and the cheaper start.
Platinum for established reactivity, a lesson for mild cases, Gold for pulling without lunging.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Is reactivity training cheaper than aggression training?
At Best Dog University they are the same program at the same price, Platinum at $3,750, because both are behavior modification cases that need three weeks. What differs is the plan inside the program and the management rules at home. Mild reactivity can sometimes be handled with lessons alone, which aggression rarely can.
Can I fix leash reactivity with private lessons only?
Sometimes, when the dog is young, the habit is recent and the household walks him the same way every day. Two or three lessons at $160 or $220 plus a strict walking plan can turn a mild case around. When the dog is over threshold at fifty feet, lessons alone are slow and the stay is the better spend.
What does Gold at $2,500 do for a reactive dog?
Gold builds the obedience framework, sit, place, loose leash and impulse control, which every reactive dog needs. It does not include behavior modification or field trips, so the reactivity itself is not worked. For a dog who pulls hard but does not lunge, Gold is right. For lunging and barking, Platinum.
Are follow-up lessons really unlimited after Platinum?
Yes, private lessons at our Cypress location for as long as you need them, plus lifetime support by phone. Reactivity work relies on the household keeping the distance and timing rules our trainers used, and the lessons are how you learn that. They tend to matter most in the first weeks at home.
How much does transport add for a reactive dog?
Transport is $250 door-to-door, pickup and return, and it includes the first lesson in your home, which for a reactive dog means our trainer walks your actual street with you. VIP includes it. Families in Pearland, Sugar Land or Montgomery often take it to avoid a long drive with a stressed dog.
