Reactive dogs
Does board and train work for reactive dogs?
Reactive dogs are the reason Best Dog University runs its programs out of a house. A reactive dog needs dozens of calm rehearsals near its trigger, and a kennel run cannot provide them; a home in a Cypress neighborhood full of other dogs can. Here is why the format works, when it does not, and what the three weeks contain.

Why the format fits
Reactivity is a repetition problem, and a stay is a repetition machine.
A reactive dog has practiced exploding at other dogs hundreds of times. To replace that pattern the dog needs to practice the opposite, calm and thinking near a trigger, more times than it practiced the explosion. Weekly lessons deliver one or two clean repetitions if the owner finds the right dog at the right distance and gets the timing right. A stay delivers several a day.
In our training home that starts through the living room window, then at the front door, then on the sidewalk, then in a store aisle, with the distance shrinking as the dog proves it stays under threshold. By the third week the dog has met its trigger calmly more times than most owners manage in a year.
- Daily calm rehearsals near the trigger
- A house full of controlled exposure, not a run
- One trainer with the timing right every time

What the three weeks contain
Foundation first, then the trigger, then public, then you.
The first week builds the skills a reactive dog is missing: a structured heel, a place command with duration, real impulse control. A dog who cannot hold a sit while a ball rolls past cannot hold one while a dog walks past. The second week introduces the trigger on purpose, at a distance, and rewards calm. The third takes it into public on field trips: pet and hardware stores along 290, Cypress sidewalks, park benches, the lake.
The handover session is where the leash comes to you. Our trainers coach you past real distractions until the walk is yours, and unlimited private lessons afterwards mean a new trigger or a slip gets worked with them rather than guessed at.
Structured heel, place and impulse control at home.
Neutrality through the window and at the front door.
Trigger at a distance the dog can hold, shrinking daily.
Store aisles and parking lots for short, controlled encounters.
Busier sidewalks and parks as the dog proves itself.
Handover: you take the leash, then unlimited lessons.
When it does not work
It fails when the owner is not taught, when the routine is dropped, or when the dog needed a vet first.
The failures people describe online are consistent. The dog was trained beautifully by a stranger and came home to a household that greeted it at the door the old way, walked it the old way and never learned the u-turn. Or the program was a facility, and the dog learned to be calm in a run and nowhere else. Or the reactivity had a medical cause, pain or a thyroid problem, that no training could reach.
Our team guards against all three: a home environment, a handover with you on the leash, and an honest call about when a dog should see a vet before a trainer.
- No handover: the dog reverts
- A kennel environment: calm nowhere but the run
- A medical cause: training cannot fix pain
Houston triggers
Summer heat, dense neighborhoods and busy stores are the training ground, not the obstacle.
Reactive dogs in Houston meet their triggers on early-morning sidewalks in master-planned neighborhoods, at the pet store, on patios and at the park. The program uses those exact places. In summer the sidewalk work runs at dawn and dusk when the pavement passes the hand test and the neighborhoods are busiest with dogs, and midday work moves into air-conditioned store aisles, which are ideal for controlled encounters.
Families from Katy, The Woodlands and Spring drive to Cypress for drop-off, about 25 to 45 minutes, or add the $250 transportation service and get the first lesson at their own front door.

Which program
Platinum for most reactive dogs; VIP for bite histories and off-leash goals.
The three-week Platinum program is the shortest program with field trips and behavior modification built in, which is why it is the usual answer. The six-week VIP program is for owners who want a finished, off-leash reliable dog, with the Mini-Educator introduced properly and taught in an in-home handover, and for serious cases where more time is the honest recommendation. Private lessons at $160 or $220 are how the handling stays sharp afterwards.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
How long does board and train take for a reactive dog?
Three weeks for most reactive dogs, which is the Platinum program: a week of foundation, a week of controlled exposure and a week in public. Serious cases and off-leash goals take the six-week VIP program.
Will my reactive dog be around other dogs during the stay?
Yes, deliberately and safely. A limited number of dogs live in the home, all known to our team, and exposure is planned by distance and duration so the reactive dog succeeds. It is never put into a group to sort itself out.
Do reactive dogs regress after board and train?
Some do, and the cause is nearly always the household dropping the routine or never learning the handling. The handover session and unlimited lessons after Platinum exist to prevent exactly that. Keep the structured walk and the u-turn and the calm holds.
Is my dog reactive or aggressive?
Reactivity is an over-the-top response to a trigger; aggression is intent to make contact. They overlap, and our team assesses which one you have on the free call and in person. Both are handled in Platinum and VIP; bite histories usually mean VIP.
Can private lessons fix reactivity instead?
Sometimes, for a mild case with an owner who can practice daily and find the right setups. For most reactive dogs the daily repetition of a stay works far better, and lessons afterwards transfer the handling to you.
