Anxiety · Honest answer
Does board and train help with separation anxiety?
Separation anxiety is the problem where a sales answer does the most damage. Here is what a stay can and cannot do about it, how the home work follows, and when your vet belongs in the plan.

The short version
A stay builds the skills; your house is where the anxiety gets treated.
Separation anxiety is a panic response tied to your departure from the place your dog lives. Move the dog to a different house with a different person and the panic usually drops, not because it is cured but because the trigger is missing. That is useful. It gives our trainers three weeks to build the things a panicking dog cannot learn while panicking: a crate that means rest, a place command with duration, calm exits from rooms, and a dog who can be in a room alone without falling apart.
Then the dog goes home and the trigger comes back. This is where most programs quietly fail, because the work that treats the anxiety is a long series of short departures from your door, repeated daily, and nobody can do that for you from Cypress. Platinum includes unlimited private lessons, and for separation anxiety they happen in your home.
- Crate comfort, place with duration and calm room exits built in the stay
- Daily rehearsal of panic interrupted for three weeks
- Departure training done afterward, at your door, with our coaching
- Your vet in the loop for true panic with injury or self-harm
The reasoning
Anxiety, boredom and protest look alike from the driveway and need different plans.
Real separation anxiety shows up within minutes of you leaving: drooling, pacing, howling, scratching at doors, house soiling in a house-trained dog, sometimes broken teeth on a crate. Boredom shows up after an hour as a chewed cushion. Protest is a dog who has learned that barking brings you back. The stay is useful for all three, but only the first is a medical-adjacent problem, and our team will tell you which one your dog has after the first days in the house.
For the true panic cases, a conversation with your vet belongs alongside the training. We are trainers, not veterinarians, and we say plainly that some dogs need medical support to be able to learn at all. What a stay adds is a dog who arrives at that conversation with a crate he likes, a place command and a settled baseline instead of a dog still rehearsing panic every morning.
- Panic within minutes: separation anxiety
- Damage after an hour: boredom, fixed with structure and exercise
- Barking that stops when you return: learned protest
For your dog
Puppies learn to be alone; adults relearn it; hard cases need the vet and the lessons.
A puppy under four months is a Puppy Development Bundle case, and alone-time training is one of the most valuable things in those four sessions, because a puppy who is never alone becomes the adult who cannot be. Adults with mild to moderate anxiety are the Platinum dogs, and the crate and place work in the stay usually changes the picture before the departures are even addressed.
Hard cases are the dogs who have injured themselves, broken out of crates or been sent home by a boarding facility. Those dogs get Platinum with a slow crate plan, our honesty that this is management and gradual change rather than a fix, and the strong suggestion that your vet be involved. Gold at $2,500 is a manners program; we do not sell it for separation anxiety.
Houston reality
Townhomes, commutes and storm season shape the departure plan here.
In a Heights or Midtown townhome with shared walls, a howling dog is a neighbor problem within a day, and the departures have to be rebuilt in very small steps: keys, door, thirty seconds, back. In Bridgeland or Cinco Ranch the yard tempts people to leave the dog outside, which in a Houston summer is a heat risk and in a thunderstorm makes the anxiety worse. The in-home lessons are where we set the plan for your actual floor plan and your actual commute along 290 or I-10.
Spring thunderstorms and hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, are the other Houston layer. A dog with separation anxiety who also panics at storms needs a crate in an interior room, a routine that does not depend on the weather, and a plan for evacuation days when you may be gone longer than usual. We build that into the first lesson at home.
Crate and place with duration, taught in the stay and repeated at home for a week.
Practice exits with no departure: pick up keys, sit back down, dozens of times.
Step outside the door and return before any anxiety starts, then lengthen slowly.
Make departures and arrivals boring: no speeches, no big greetings.
Add real absences in minutes, not hours, and log what the dog does.
Book a follow-up lesson at the first plateau rather than pushing through it.
The programs
Platinum for the foundation, in-home lessons for the departures.
Platinum is three weeks in our trainer's home at $3,750 and includes behavior modification, a comprehensive handover and unlimited private lessons. For families who want to start at home instead, private lessons are $160 at the training home or $220 in your house, and the in-home version is the right one for this problem. Transport at $250 includes the first lesson in your home, which is where the departure plan is set.
The programs
Programs for separation anxiety at Best Dog University.
Platinum for the foundation in Cypress, then in-home lessons where the departures actually happen.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Will my dog's separation anxiety get worse being away from me?
Usually not, because the anxiety is tied to your departures from your house, and in a different house with a consistent handler most dogs settle faster than their owners expect. What we watch for is generalized anxiety, a dog who panics in any new place, and we tell you if that is what we see so the vet conversation happens early.
Can a two-week Gold program fix separation anxiety?
No, and we will not sell it for that. Gold is a manners and obedience program with one follow-up lesson. Separation anxiety needs the behavior modification of Platinum and, above all, the unlimited in-home lessons afterward, because the departures have to be rebuilt at your door rather than ours.
Should my dog be on medication before board and train?
That is a question for your vet, and we encourage you to ask it before a stay if your dog has hurt himself, broken out of a crate or refused food when alone. Training and medication often work together. Tell our team what the vet says so the stay is planned around it, including any doses we need to give.
How long until my dog can be left alone for a workday?
Longer than anyone wants to hear, and it depends on where the dog starts. The stay builds the foundation in three weeks; the departures are lengthened at home in steps over the following weeks, with lessons whenever you hit a plateau. Progress is measured in minutes added per week, and our team is honest about the pace rather than promising a date.
