A second stay
Can a dog do board and train twice?
A second stay is not a sign that the first one failed. Dogs change, households change, and the right program for a six-month-old is not always the right one for a two-year-old. The question is whether a second stay is the best tool for what changed.

The short answer
Yes, and the second stay usually starts faster, because the dog already knows the house and the rules.
A returning dog walks into a house it knows. The crate, the place bed, the door routine and the trainer are all familiar, so the settling-in days a first stay spends on structure go straight into new work. That is why a second stay after a Silver week so often moves quickly into the heel, the down and the public work of Platinum.
The dog's commands do not start from zero either. Place, sit and the loose leash are already there, even if they have gone soft at home, and the trainer can see in the first session what has held and what has drifted. The time is spent on what changed, not on what the dog already knew.
- The house, the crate and the trainer are familiar
- Existing commands are refreshed, not retaught
- New work starts sooner
- Each stay is booked at the published price
Good reasons for a second stay
Building up, a life change and a new problem are the three reasons families come back.
Building up is the planned version. A young dog does Silver or Gold for manners, lives with the results for a while, and returns for Platinum or VIP when the family wants a structured heel, public reliability or off-leash work. The second program builds on the first rather than repeating it.
A life change is the unplanned version: a baby due in Fairfield, a move from an apartment in Midtown to a yard in Cypress, a second dog, a family member who can no longer walk a strong dog. A new problem is the third, often reactivity that appears as a dog matures around two. Each is a reason to call, and each gets a different program.
- Building up: Silver or Gold now, Platinum or VIP later
- A life change: a baby, a move, a new dog
- A new problem: reactivity or anxiety as the dog matures
- Each reason gets its own recommendation
When a second stay is the wrong tool
If the household dropped the routine, a second stay without changing home repeats the result.
The honest version: some dogs slip because the place bed went into the garage, the walk turned back into a sniffing contest and the door went back to a free-for-all. A second stay will bring the dog back to form, and the same household will lose it again. What fixes that is lessons, with a trainer watching the family, not more weeks away.
That is why the first step is always a call, not a booking. Tell our team what slipped and when. If lessons included with your program are unused, the answer is usually to book them. A Platinum graduate has unlimited private lessons, and a Gold graduate has an additional lesson and lifelong support to fall back on.

Holidays, boarding and refreshers
For a graduate who only needs a tune-up while you travel, boarding with refreshers may be the better fit.
Graduates can board with us in the same training home, and our trainers run refreshers on the commands that have slipped during the stay. That is not a second program, and it is priced per stay rather than at a program price; our team quotes it when you book. For a dog whose skills are mostly intact, a boarding week over the holidays can do what a second program would, at a different cost.
Houston's calendar shapes the timing. Thanksgiving, Christmas and the July 4 week fill first, and the fireworks at July 4 and New Year are a reason families want a steady dog before those dates. Book as soon as the dates are known, because only a limited number of dogs live in the house at once.
What we do at Best Dog University
The next program up for building, the right program for a new problem, and lessons before either.
Silver is $1,500 for one week, Gold $2,500 for two, Platinum $3,750 for three and VIP $10,000 for six, and a second stay is booked at the same published price. The most common second stay is Platinum after Silver or Gold, because the heel, the down, behavior modification and field trips are the natural next step, followed by unlimited private lessons.
The honest fit: if your dog did Platinum and is slipping, use the lessons before anything else. If your dog did Gold and a new problem has appeared, tell our team; the answer may be Platinum, private lessons at $160 in Cypress or $220 at home, or a boarding week with refreshers.
The programs

Most second stays step up a program; some are better served by lessons or boarding with refreshers.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Is a second board and train cheaper?
Programs are booked at their published prices whether it is a dog's first stay or its second. What a returning dog usually gets is a faster start, because the house and the rules are familiar. Ask our team on the call about your dog's situation and the program that fits it.
How soon after the first program can my dog come back?
There is no set waiting period. Most families live with the results for a while first, which shows what held and what did not. A second stay booked straight after the first makes sense mainly when the plan was always to build up, such as Silver followed by Platinum. Our team will advise on timing.
Does lifetime support include a second stay?
No. Lifetime support means you can contact our team about your dog for as long as you own it and get an answer and a next step. Unlimited private lessons are a separate inclusion in Platinum and VIP. A second stay is a new program at the published price.
Can my dog repeat the same program?
It can, if the dog needs the same work again, for example Silver as a refresher after a long gap. Most families move to the next program up instead, because a second stay is a chance to add skills. Our team recommends the program on the call based on what changed.
Is boarding with refreshers the same as a second board and train?
No. Boarding is a graduate service where the dog stays in the training home under the structure it learned, with refreshers on commands that have slipped. A board and train program teaches new skills with a go-home session at the end. Our team will tell you which your dog needs.
