Breed questions · Families

Are pit bulls good with kids?

Families ask this when they are adopting, when a relative has one, or when a landlord raises it. Our trainers answer it the same way for every breed: look at the dog in front of you, then build the rules that keep kids and dog safe.

The honest answer

Temperament and training decide it; the pit bull label covers too many different dogs to answer for all of them.

Pit bull is not a single breed. The term covers American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers and a wide range of mixed dogs with a broad head and a muscular build, including many dogs in Houston shelters. What they tend to share is strength, athleticism, a short coat and terrier tenacity, along with a strong interest in people.

That people focus is why many pit type dogs are gentle with children. It is also why an untrained one greets a five-year-old with its whole body. The risk with kids is usually impulse rather than intent: jumping, knocking over, mouthing in play. Those are training issues, and they have training answers.

  • Pit bull is a type, not one breed
  • Often intensely people-focused
  • Strong and exuberant, so impulse control matters
  • How a dog treats other dogs is separate from how it treats people

Reading your dog

A dog that is good with kids stays loose, moves away when it has had enough and takes food gently.

Look at the dog, not the breed card. A dog comfortable with children has a relaxed body, approaches and leaves on its own, tolerates handling without stiffening and takes treats softly. Warning signs look the same in every breed: freezing, lip licking, showing the whites of the eyes, turning the head away, growling, or guarding toys and food. A dog showing those needs space and a professional opinion.

Rescue dogs deserve a careful introduction. A shelter dog's history with children is often unknown, so start with short, calm, supervised meetings on leash, with the dog free to move away. Never leave a young child alone with any dog, including a family dog you trust completely.

1

Meet the dog on leash with the child calm and seated.

2

Let the dog choose to approach, and end the meeting while it is still relaxed.

3

Teach children not to hug, climb on or corner the dog.

4

Give the dog a place bed or crate that kids never enter.

5

Feed the dog away from where children eat and play.

6

Supervise every interaction with young children, every time.

Houston reality

Houston adds leases, crowded parks and heat to the kids-and-dog equation.

At the time of writing, some Houston apartment leases and insurance policies restrict pit bull type dogs, so check yours before adopting. The county and city shelter sites post the current animal rules for Harris County and Houston. A renting family may also want the dog's training documented for a landlord.

Busy playgrounds in Bridgeland or Cinco Ranch and backyard birthday parties put a lot of excited children around the dog at once. That is where impulse control earns its keep: a dog that holds place while kids run and waits to be released to greet is a dog everyone relaxes around. In summer, short coats still mean hot paws on pavement, so outdoor play belongs in cooler hours.

  • Check lease and insurance rules before adopting
  • Place and a leash during parties and playdates
  • Greetings with children only on release
  • Cool-hour play in summer, pavement tested first

At Best Dog University

Gold at $2,500 builds kid-safe manners; Platinum at $3,750 is for dog selectivity or guarding.

A pit type dog that jumps on the kids, mouths in play and pulls on the leash fits the two-week Gold Board & Train at $2,500. Our trainers build sit and place stays, impulse control and door manners in the Cypress home, and the go-home session covers how to run the house rules with children around.

If the dog is reactive to other dogs, guards food or toys, or has growled at a child, the three-week Platinum at $3,750 is the honest fit, with behavior modification and unlimited private lessons at home. For a puppy, the Puppy Development Bundle at $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home teaches gentle play and handling from the start. Any bite toward a child is a reason to call us first.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Are pit bulls safe around babies?

No dog of any breed should be left alone with a baby. Supervise all contact, give the dog a space away from the nursery, and prepare it before the baby arrives with new routines, sounds and boundaries. A calm, trained dog with clear rules makes the adjustment easier for the whole household.

Are pit bulls good family dogs?

Many are loving, loyal family dogs. Their strength and enthusiasm mean they need exercise, training and rules, and some are selective about other dogs. Choose an individual dog whose temperament you have seen with your own eyes, and plan the training from the first week.

Can I adopt a pit bull if I have young kids?

Yes, with care. Choose an adult dog whose behavior around children is known, or meet the dog several times with your kids before committing. Ask the shelter or rescue what they have observed; foster notes often tell you more than the breed label ever will.

What should I do if my pit bull growls at my child?

Take it seriously and do not punish the growl, which is a warning. Separate dog and child, manage so it cannot happen again, and get professional help to find out why. Common causes include guarding, pain and feeling cornered. A growl is information, and you want the dog to keep giving it.

Are pit bulls good with other pets?

Some live peacefully with other dogs and cats, especially when raised with them. Others are selective, particularly with dogs of the same sex. Introductions should be slow and supervised. Dog selectivity is one of the problems our Platinum program works on, with lessons for the family afterward.
