Transportation vs drop-off

Transportation vs drop-off for board and train: the $250 door-to-door service

It is the smallest decision in a board and train and the one families overthink. This page prices both options against the actual drive from your part of Houston, explains what the in-home lesson inside the $250 is worth, and says plainly when you should keep the money.

Side by side

Drop-off costs a drive each way; transportation costs $250 and includes a lesson at your house.

Dropping off means two trips to Cypress: one to hand over the dog and one to pick him up at the go-home session, where our trainers show you everything and coach you through the leash. For families in Cypress, Tomball, Katy or Spring, that is about 20 to 35 minutes each way outside rush hour and a chance to see the house your dog lives in, which many people value.

Transportation means our team collects the dog from your driveway, returns him at the end of the program, and runs the first lesson in your home on delivery, so the handover happens at your front door with your distractions. It is a flat $250 across the service area, from the Heights to The Woodlands to Pearland. In VIP it is part of the program, along with the in-home handover and unlimited in-home lessons.

When drop-off wins

Drop-off wins when you are close, curious and have a flexible day.

If you live in Bridgeland, Towne Lake, Fairfield or anywhere along 290, the training home is minutes away and the drive is not a cost worth paying to avoid. Families in Tomball, Katy and Spring are about 20 to 35 minutes out, close enough that two trips are an easy trade for $250. And seeing the house matters to some people: the yard, the place beds, the front door your dog will practice at.

Drop-off also wins when you want to be at the go-home session in the place it was designed for. Our trainers can demonstrate a heel past the neighbor's fence and a place command in a room the dog knows before they hand you the leash. If your own house is calm and your dog loads into a car without drama, save the money and put it toward a private lesson later at $160.

  • You live within about 35 minutes of Cypress
  • You want to see the training home
  • The dog rides in a car without stress
  • Your schedule can absorb two weekday trips
  • You would rather spend $250 on a later lesson

When transportation wins

Transportation wins when distance, work hours or the dog make the drive a problem.

From Pearland, League City, Sugar Land, Kingwood or Montgomery the drive is 45 to 70 minutes each way, which means a half day lost twice. From central Houston it is 30 to 45 minutes, and in rush hour on 290 far longer. Families who work fixed hours in the Medical Center or the Energy Corridor often cannot make a weekday drop-off, and our team's pick-up solves that without asking anyone to take leave.

It also wins for the dog who is a problem in the car: a 90-pound Shepherd who will not load, a dog who panics on the highway, an anxious rescue who shuts down when the family says goodbye at a strange house. And it wins whenever the household is the hard part, because the lesson on delivery puts our trainer at your door, on your street, with your kids present. Many families count that lesson alone as worth most of the $250.

  • The drive is over 45 minutes each way
  • Nobody can leave work for a weekday drop-off
  • The dog is difficult to load or anxious in the car
  • You want the handover in your own home
  • The problem is the front door, the kids or the second dog

What Houston families choose

Northwest Houston drives; the rest of the city rides.

The line our team sees runs roughly along the distance. Cypress, Tomball, Katy, Spring and Jersey Village families nearly always drop off. The Woodlands splits. Inside the Loop, Memorial, Sugar Land, Pearland and the Lake Conroe side mostly choose transportation, and the in-home lesson on delivery is usually the reason given, more than the drive.

Weather changes the picture twice a year. In hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, a return date can land on a day nobody should be on the road, and our team reschedules delivery around the forecast. Around July 4 and New Year, some families ask for a return a day early or late so the dog is settled at home before the fireworks start. Both are easier to arrange with transportation than with a two-way drive.

How to decide

Decide drop-off or transportation in five steps.

Most families need only the first two. Do all five if the dog or the household is complicated, and tell our team the answers when you book.

1

Look up your drive to Cypress outside rush hour. Under 35 minutes, lean drop-off; over 45, lean transportation.

2

Check who can be free on a weekday morning twice. If nobody, transportation.

3

Think about the dog in the car. If loading or the highway is a fight, transportation, and tell our team so the pick-up is planned.

4

Decide where you want the handover. If the problem lives at your front door, the in-home lesson on delivery is the point.

5

If you are booking VIP, stop: transport home and the in-home handover are already included.

The programs

Every stay can start at your door.

Transportation is optional on Silver, Gold and Platinum and included in VIP. Every program ends with a go-home session either way.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Is the $250 for each direction or both?

Both. The $250 covers pick-up from your home at the start of the program and return at the end, plus the first lesson in your home on the day the dog comes back. There is no separate charge for either leg, and the price is the same across the whole service area.

Can I drop off and use transportation for the return?

Ask our team when you book. Families sometimes drive to Cypress on day one to see the house and then have the dog delivered home so the handover lesson happens in their living room. The transportation service is priced as a round trip, so talk to us about what a single leg would involve.

Does drop-off mean I miss the in-home lesson?

The go-home session happens at the training home for families who drop off, and it covers everything: commands, leash handling, place at a door, what to do when the dog tests the rules. The in-home lesson is part of the transportation service and of VIP. Any family can book an in-home lesson later at $220.

What areas does transportation cover?

Houston, Cypress, The Woodlands, Tomball, Katy, Spring, Montgomery, Hockley and surrounding communities, including Sugar Land, Pearland, Kingwood and the Lake Conroe area. If you are not sure whether your address is inside the service area, say where you are on the free phone consultation and our team will confirm.
