Freedom, earned in stages

Off-leash board and train in Houston: how a dog earns freedom in six weeks

Nobody should take the leash off a dog because a trainer said it was fine. The leash comes off because the dog has proved, over weeks and in the places that matter, that he will come back, stop, and stay. This page explains how that proof is built in Houston and why it takes six weeks rather than three.

Who wants the leash off

Off-leash training is for the owner with a reason, not a wish.

The hunter, the hiker and the boater. If your weekends involve the Sam Houston National Forest, a duck lease or a dock on Lake Conroe, a dog on a six-foot leash is a liability and a dog who ignores a recall is a danger. These owners need a dog who stops on a whistle at distance and comes through water, brush and other dogs.

The suburban owner with a big yard and an open gate. Families in Cross Creek Ranch, Towne Lake or Gleannloch Farms with kids who leave gates open want a dog who will not cross the street when he could. Off-leash reliability here is less about freedom on trails and more about a recall that beats a delivery truck.

The owner who wants the dog with them, everywhere. Patios, tailgates, the office, a friend's ranch. This buyer is not looking to let the dog run loose; they want a dog who heels beside them across a parking lot with the leash in their pocket. That is the VIP standard: the leash exists as a courtesy to strangers, not as a control.

  • Trail, water and hunting dogs who need recall through wildlife
  • Yard dogs whose recall has to beat the open gate
  • Owners who want a heel and stays without a leash in public
  • Working breeds with the drive to run and the brain to be trusted

Six weeks of earning it

The leash comes off in the last two weeks, and every week before it is what makes that safe.

Drop-off. Transport is part of VIP, so our team usually collects the dog from your home and brings him to the Cypress training home off 290. The first fortnight is leash obedience: sit, down, place, heel, door boundaries, all built with rewards and clear markers. No off-leash work happens and no e-collar goes on. The dog has to know the words before any tool is attached to them.

The middle fortnight is the transfer. The long line replaces the leash so the dog feels distance without having freedom, and the Mini-Educator is layered onto known commands at the lowest level the dog notices. The final fortnight is the part you came for: heel, recall and stays with nothing attached, in public, then in your own neighborhood at the in-home handover.

1

Week 1: house rules, crate, place and the obedience foundation on a standard leash; a baseline recall video in the yard.

2

Week 2: heel, down/stay with duration, front and center positioning; behavior modification for any reactivity that would sabotage off-leash work.

3

Week 3: the 30-foot long line on the property and quiet streets; e-collar conditioning begins on recall and sit at low levels.

4

Week 4: long line and collar in public: recall past dogs at the park, heel through a store, stays in a parking lot; water recall at the lake.

5

Week 5: the line drags, then comes off. Off-leash heel and recall at the property, on trails and at the lake with distractions staged deliberately.

6

Week 6: new locations with a second handler to prove the dog listens to the command, not the person; transport home; the in-home handover.

Price and inclusions

Off-leash reliability is a VIP inclusion at $10,000, and it is not sold in shorter programs.

We do not offer a three-week off-leash program, and we would be wary of anyone who does. Platinum, at $3,750, produces a reliable dog on leash in public with a structured heel; it does not include off-leash reliability or an e-collar. VIP, at $10,000, includes both, along with transport home, an in-home handover, unlimited in-home lessons and lifetime support directly with our team.

The $250 reservation deposit. Six weeks in a home that keeps only a limited number of dogs is a real block of the calendar. After the free consultation confirms VIP is right, a $250 deposit reserves the dates and is applied to the $10,000. The Mini-Educator is yours to keep at the end, so budget nothing for equipment.

  • $10,000 with the e-collar and the ride home included
  • No shorter off-leash program exists here, on purpose
  • $250 deposit, credited toward the balance
  • Unlimited in-home lessons after, at no per-visit cost

Houston specifics

Where a dog can legally be off leash in Houston is a short list, so the training is built around the real map.

At the time of writing, Houston's parks require dogs to be leashed outside designated dog park areas, and Harris County has its own rules for the parks it runs; check Houston Parks and Recreation and Harris County Precinct 4 for the current versions. That matters for what off-leash actually means for you: private land, your own yard, a lease or a ranch, and the heel-with-leash-in-pocket standard everywhere else. We train for that reality rather than pretending Houston is a mountain town.

The hazards are real too. Alligators are present in bayous and retention ponds across the west and northwest side, so water recall is trained at the lake on a line first and our trainers never send a dog into unfamiliar water. Snakes and fire ants live in tall grass along the trails, which is one more reason a VIP dog is proofed to hold a heel on the path rather than range.

  • Leash rules apply in most Houston and Harris County parks; the source has the current text
  • Water recall at the lake on a long line before any off-leash trust
  • Trail proofing on the paths around Cypress and the national forest
  • Summer sessions at first light and after sunset from May through September

Off-leash reliability is a VIP outcome. If a dependable heel on leash is enough for your life, Platinum is the honest recommendation.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How much does off-leash board and train cost in Houston?

Off-leash reliability is part of the six-week VIP program at $10,000. The price includes the stay in our Cypress home, all training, the Mini-Educator e-collar, transport home, an in-home handover, unlimited in-home lessons and lifetime support. A $250 reservation deposit holds the dates and is applied to that total.

Can a dog be trained off leash in three weeks?

Not to a standard we would put our name on. Three weeks produces a reliable dog on leash with a strong heel. Off-leash reliability needs the extra time to condition the e-collar properly, proof recall through real distractions and then remove the line in stages. That is why it lives only in the six-week VIP.

Is the e-collar required for off-leash reliability?

For distance and distraction, yes, which is why the Mini-Educator is included in VIP. At 100 yards with a deer moving, voice alone is not a reliable signal. The collar is introduced only after the dog knows the commands, at the lowest level he notices, and our trainers teach you to use it the same way at the handover.

Will my dog come back if he sees a squirrel or another dog?

That is the exact test the last two weeks are built around. Recall is proofed past dogs at the park, wildlife on the trails and water at the lake before graduation, and the in-home handover shows you the recall in your own neighborhood. Reliability is a percentage you keep high with practice, and the unlimited in-home lessons exist for that.

Where in Houston can I actually use off-leash training?

Your own yard and private land, plus designated off-leash dog parks such as those listed by Houston Parks and Recreation. Most public parks and trails require a leash at the time of writing, so for daily life the payoff is a dog who heels beside you with the leash slack or pocketed and who recalls instantly if a gate is left open.
