Great Dane training in Houston: what the breed needs and which program fits

A Great Dane at our Cypress training home is a dog that can rest its chin on the kitchen counter without stretching. That is the whole training story: everything a smaller dog gets away with, a Dane cannot. Families call between six and fourteen months, when the puppy is suddenly bigger than they are. Here is the plan and the price.

Heat, housing, drive

A Dane brings a short coat on a giant frame, a slow-growing body and a soft temperament into a Houston home.

A Dane's coat is short, but the AVMA's heat guidance is about more than coats: mass matters, and a giant dog sheds heat slowly and struggles in humidity. Danes are also prone to bloat, which is one more reason we never work them hard around meals. From May to September a Dane at our home trains outside at dawn and after dark in short sessions, and spends the heat of the day indoors on place, which for a Dane is a large bed on a cool floor.

Housing is a space question. A Dane in a Memorial townhome or a Midtown apartment has to be able to turn around in a hallway without knocking a child down, ride an elevator calmly and wait at a door that opens onto a busy sidewalk. A Dane in a Cypress or Katy house has more room and a counter at chin height. Both need the same core skill: a dog that holds still on request.

The drive is gentle. The AKC describes the Dane as friendly, patient and dependable, and most are. The training challenge is not drive but growth: a Dane's body is not finished until eighteen months or later, so the training has to protect joints and growth plates, with no jumping exercises and no long pounding walks on pavement.

  • Mass sheds heat slowly: short sessions, dawn and dark in summer
  • Hallways, elevators and doors need a dog that holds still
  • No jumping or pounding while the body grows
  • Late fear periods need patient exposure

What we see most

Jumping and leaning at 140 pounds, a pull nobody can hold, standing-height counter raids and late-onset fear.

Jumping and leaning are the first call. A Dane that greets guests with its paws on their shoulders is looking them in the eye, and a Dane that leans on a grandmother moves her. Neither is aggression, and both are dangerous at this size. The fix is a greeting rule and a place bed, held consistently, before the dog is fully grown.

The pull is the second. A Dane that pulls cannot be walked by most people, and the harness families buy makes a giant dog more efficient at it. Loose leash walking on quiet streets first, then past the distractions on the Terry Hershey trail, is the only way the whole household gets the walk back. Counter surfing is the third, and it is simply a dog that can reach; leave-it and place at mealtimes handle it.

Fear and reactivity are the fourth and the ones that need the longer program. A Dane that matures slowly can develop a fear of strangers or dogs at a year or more, and at this size a fearful lunge is a serious event. Controlled exposure at a distance the dog can hold, with time and calm, is Platinum work, and it should start before the fear hardens.

  • Paws on shoulders, eye to eye with guests
  • A pull no one in the house can hold
  • Counter surfing without stretching
  • Fear of strangers or dogs arriving late

The stay, built for Danes

How a Dane's stay runs in our Cypress home: stillness first, then doors and greetings, then the walk, protecting the joints throughout.

A Dane stay is built around stillness, because a giant dog that holds a sit and a place has solved most of its problems. Meals are earned with a sit and eaten calmly, with rest afterward because of the bloat risk. Place on a large bed gets longer each day while the household moves around it. Greetings are practiced with real arrivals until a sit is the dog's default at the door.

The walk is taught on quiet streets and kept short on pavement while the body grows. For a fearful Dane, strangers and dogs are introduced at distance and closed slowly, never rushed. The updates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday show the leash going slack and a very large dog lying quietly while the doorbell rings.

1

Earned meals with calm rest afterward, and a crate large enough to be a real den.

2

Place with duration on a big bed while the trainer cooks, answers the door and moves other dogs past.

3

Greetings at the front door with real arrivals, until a Dane offers a sit without being asked.

4

Loose leash walking on quiet streets, short and off pavement where possible while the body grows.

5

Leave-it and place at mealtimes, so the counter stops being a buffet.

6

For a fearful Dane, strangers and dogs at a distance the dog can hold, closing slowly over days.

7

A go-home session with the family's hallway, door and kitchen included.

Programs and prices

Gold for the young Dane with manners problems, Platinum for the fearful or reactive one, the bundle for the puppy.

The two-week Gold Board & Train is $2,500 and fits most young Danes: sit/stay, place/stay, loose leash walking, door boundaries, jumping and impulse control, with a go-home session, one more lesson and lifelong support. The three-week Platinum is $3,750 and adds behavior modification, a structured heel, public field trips and unlimited private lessons, which is the right tool for a Dane that has become fearful or reactive.

A Dane puppy under four months takes the Puppy Development Bundle ($550 in Cypress, $750 in-home), and with this breed it is the best timing there is, because a thirty-pound puppy that learns not to jump saves a family from a 140-pound problem. Transportation is $250 door-to-door and includes the first lesson at your home; tell our team the dog's size when you book.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How much does Great Dane training cost in Houston?

A young Dane with manners problems takes the two-week Gold Board & Train at $2,500. A fearful or reactive Dane takes the three-week Platinum at $3,750. Dane puppies under four months take the Puppy Development Bundle at $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home. Door-to-door transportation costs $250; private lessons run $160 in Cypress and $220 at your home.

Is a Great Dane too big for a home board and train?

No. Our Cypress training home has hosted giant breeds, and a home is where a Dane needs to learn, because the hallway, the couch and the kitchen counter are where its problems live. The crate is sized for the dog.

How do you protect a growing Dane's joints during training?

No jumping exercises, no long walks on pavement, no rough play with other dogs, and rest after meals because of the bloat risk. Most of a Dane's training is stillness, greetings and a loose leash, none of which pound the joints. Your vet's advice on exercise limits for your dog's age comes first, and we build the stay around it.

My Dane became scared of strangers at a year old. Is that normal?

It is common in a slow-maturing breed, and it needs attention now rather than later, because a fearful 140-pound dog that lunges is a serious event. The Platinum stay introduces strangers and dogs at a distance the Dane can hold and closes it patiently over three weeks, and the unlimited lessons afterward keep the family's handling calm and consistent.

Can a Dane handle a summer stay in Houston?

Yes, on the summer schedule. A giant dog sheds heat slowly, so outdoor sessions are short and happen at dawn and after dark, and the heat of the day is spent on place on a cool floor. The AVMA's heat guidance for large, heavy dogs is the standard we follow.
