Franchise vs independent
Franchise vs independent dog trainer in Houston: what changes for your dog
This page names no brands, because the point is not that one company is better than another. It is that the two models put a different person in charge of your dog's plan, and you should know who that is before you pay a deposit anywhere, including here.

Side by side
Side by side: a system delivered locally, or a trainer who wrote his own.
A franchise trainer buys the right to use a national name, a curriculum and a marketing system, then delivers it in your area. The advantage is consistency: the program in Houston is the program in Dallas, the pricing is packaged and the branding is familiar. The trade-off is that the curriculum was written for every dog in the country, and the person at your door may be new to it. Ask how long the local operator has been training, not how long the brand has existed.
An independent trainer answers only to the dog in front of him and the results he can show. At Best Dog University that means balanced training built over sixteen years and more than nine hundred dogs, delivered in our trainer's own home in Cypress rather than a facility, with a limited number of dogs at a time. The trade-off is scale: one home, one team, and a start date that depends on space.
| Franchise trainer | Independent trainer (Best Dog University) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the plan | A national curriculum, applied locally | Our team, on the free consultation, for this dog |
| Where the dog trains | Varies: a facility, a franchisee's location or your home | Our trainer's home in Cypress, then real stores, parks and the lake |
| Experience to ask about | The local operator's, not the brand's | 16+ years, 900+ dogs, specialties in anxiety, reactivity and aggression |
| Pricing | Packaged tiers; ask what is included | Published: Silver $1,500, Gold $2,500, Platinum $3,750, VIP $10,000 |
| Who you talk to afterward | The local operator, or a support line | The trainers who had your dog; lifelong support on Gold and above |
| Consistency | The same program in every city | The same trainers for every dog, with the plan varied per dog |
When a franchise is right
When a franchise trainer is the right choice.
A franchise fits a family that moves. If a corporate transfer could take you from the Energy Corridor to another city next year, a national program with the same curriculum and follow-up in the next city is a genuine advantage, and an independent trainer in Cypress cannot offer that. It also fits an owner who values a familiar brand and a standard package over a conversation about the dog.
It fits when the local operator is excellent. Franchise or not, the person holding the leash is what matters, and some franchise operators are experienced trainers who chose the system for the marketing. If you have met the operator, watched him with dogs and liked what you saw, the brand on the truck is secondary. The questions to ask are the ones you would ask us: how long, how many dogs, where the dog lives, who does the go-home session.
- You may relocate and want the same program in the next city
- You prefer a packaged tier to a tailored plan
- You have met the local operator and trust him with dogs

When an independent is right
When an independent trainer is right: behavior cases, judgment calls and a dog who lives in a home.
An independent is right when the dog does not fit a package. Reactivity, aggression, anxiety and resource guarding need a trainer who can change the plan on day four because of what he saw on day three, and that judgment belongs to the person who wrote the method. Our trainers' specialties are exactly those cases, and the three-week Platinum at $3,750 exists because they need three weeks, behavior modification and field trips, not a fixed lesson count.
It is right when you want to know where your dog sleeps. Our board and train dogs live in our trainer's home off US-290, not in a kennel run, with photo and video updates every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, field trips to the stores along 290 and the lake, and a go-home session at the end. And it is right when you want the person who trained your dog to answer the phone in a year, which is what lifelong support means on Gold and above. Small scale is the cost of that; it is also the point.
- Reactivity, aggression, anxiety or guarding
- You want the plan written for your dog after a real conversation
- You want the same trainers on the phone afterward
Cost
Cost: what we publish, what to ask a franchise, and the questions that matter more than price.
We do not quote other companies' prices and will not guess at them here. Ours are published: the Silver Foundation week is $1,500, the two-week Gold is $2,500, the three-week Platinum is $3,750 and the six-week VIP is $10,000 with transport, the e-collar and unlimited in-home lessons included. Private lessons are $160 in Cypress or $220 in your home, the Puppy Development Bundle is $550 or $750, transportation is $250 and a $250 reservation deposit is applied to any program.
When you price a franchise package, ask what the tier includes: how many days of training, where the dog lives, whether follow-up lessons are counted or unlimited, and whether transport and the handover are in the number. Then ask the same of us. Cheap is only cheap if the dog comes home trained; a program that has to be repeated costs the sum of both.
- Our prices are published and the deposit is $250 on every program
- Count the follow-up: one lesson, unlimited lessons or none
- Transport and the handover should be in the number, not surprises
How to choose
Six questions to ask either kind of trainer before you pay a deposit.
Ask these of a franchise, of an independent and of us. A trainer who answers them plainly is worth considering under any brand. A trainer who answers with the company's history instead of his own is telling you something. Houston has room for both models, and the dog does not care which sign is on the truck; he cares who holds the leash for the next three weeks.
How many years have you personally trained dogs, and how many dogs? The operator's answer, not the company's.
Where exactly will my dog live, and how many dogs are there at once?
Who does the go-home session, and does the same person answer the phone afterward?
What happens on day four if the plan is not working for my dog?
What is your plan if a hurricane or a tropical storm hits during the stay?
What is the total with transport, follow-up and the deposit, in writing?

Platinum is the behavior program, Gold the household one, VIP the off-leash one. Each has a published price and the same $250 deposit.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Is a franchise dog trainer worse than an independent one?
No. The model does not train the dog; the person does. A franchise gives you a standardized program and a familiar name; an independent gives you one trainer's method and judgment. Either can be excellent or poor. Judge the individual holding the leash: years, dogs, where the dog lives, and who answers afterward.
Is Best Dog University a franchise?
No. Best Dog University is an independent program in Cypress, formerly Purdom Dog Academy, built on balanced training over sixteen years and more than nine hundred dogs. The board and train home is our trainer's own house, not a facility, and every plan is set on the free consultation for the dog in question.
Why do independent trainers have limited availability?
Because one home and one team can only hold a limited number of dogs at a time, and holding more would mean less training per dog. That is why a $250 reservation deposit is what secures a start date, and why the weeks before the holidays fill first. A franchise with several locations can sometimes start sooner.
Do you follow a fixed curriculum?
Each program has a defined skill list, published on its page, so you know what Gold or Platinum covers. What changes per dog is the pace, the tools, the order and how much of the three weeks goes to behavior work versus obedience. That judgment is made daily by the trainers who have the dog.
What should I ask a trainer in Houston before booking?
Where the dog will live, how many dogs are there at once, who does the training and the handover, how follow-up works, and what the total is with transport and the deposit. Then ask what the trainer would not take on. Ask us the same; the free consultation exists to answer those questions before any money changes hands.

The free phone consultation is a direct call with our trainers about your dog, no cost and no obligation. If a program fits, a $250 reservation deposit holds the start date and is applied to the total.
